Barring trade, 2012 MILB Rotation (or why it's cool CD and Big Game were traded)

So, CD might go off for 30 HR some year. Hunter could post a 180 IP 3.9 ERA season. But, look at the trade ammo the Rangers have going into the offseason.

Round Rock: Old Man Hurley, Perez, Ramirez, mErlin, Wieland

Frisco: Loux, Grimm, Ross, MDLS, Bleier

MB: Bell, Jackson, Mendez, Buckel, Tepesch

Dads: Perez, Payano, Lamb, Williams, Thompson

Hard to guess the lower affiliate rotations. Even the upper levels are hard to predict. Rangers might prefer to have Scheppers in the AAA rotation. Maybe they will feel comfortable pushing Tepesch and Bell to AA. Font will be back, but he probably start in extended.

Nevertheless, plenty there to obtain untouchables like Kershaw or Felix.

Rangers: CJ, Ogando, Holland, Harrison, Feliz is looking stout as well.

Star-divide

Thanks for a great season Wieland and mErlin! Best of luck to you.

that wouldn't be the case

if anything, Feliz would be the casualty and would still in the ‘pen under these circumstances. I think you have to let CJ walk. That’s why you build a farm system so you don’t have to continually sign players to expensive long-term contracts after their prime

Perez could be ready for a callup next year along with Ramirez, Erlin or Weiland (if said players are still around at that point)

No.

They would keep Colby in hopes of a rebound and not resign CJ.

I don't get any of this discussion.

CJ is the better pitcher.

I forgot that Colby is under contract for 2012, but, still, CJ is pretty close to what the Rangers would’ve wanted to get at the deadline this year had they not had him.

4/65 for CJ

Next year’s rotation: CJ, Colby, Ogando, Holland, Feliz.

Harrison could net an impact bat, maybe Matt Kemp.

Rock the J2, JD!

by rooster on Jul 31, 2011 9:13 AM CDT up reply actions

You think 4/65 will sign CJ?

National guys are predicting 100m for him.

Colby is SUPER cheap next year. Like 3M. There’s no way he’s not in the rotation in 2012. If he’s healthy, he’ll be a starter.

by Brad on Jul 31, 2011 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Nobody, repeate NOBODY, is saying Colby is better than CJ.

It’s an issue of money. 4/65 isn’t going to be enough for the best pitcher on the market.

I’m not saying they won’t sign CJ; I think they’ll make a very honest real attempt at it. I’m just skeptical that they’ll be able to actually sign him.

I mean,

I guess he is a FA after 2012, so maybe there’s some small reason to move him if they can’t extend him…but I imagine they think they’ll have the ownership situation resolved by then and will plan on keeping him a Dodger for his career.

I think the Dodgers are going to have to blow things apart and start from scratch.

The only guy they should consider building around is Kershaw. They need a serious influx of ML-ready talent, particularly in the rotation.

$100M for CJ is possible. Who knows.

5/80 or 5/85 with a sixth year option is OK for the Rangers.

by rooster on Jul 31, 2011 10:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Really?

I like CJ a bunch as a player and person. But he is 30 years old. I don’t see a sixth year as an option considering this is his second year as a starter. Two years is a fairly short time to look at to gauge long term success.

It won't be Cliff Lee money, so I think the Rangers should do what it takes.

4/65 is probably “insulting” but CJ is on the record that winning is most important. He has said he’s not looking only for the highest deal.

5/85 seems like a good way to keep him off the market and keep a 1A on the team.

It’s tricky, of course, with his age being 31, and I could see temptation to not go beyond 4 guaranteed years. Alot depends on what he has indicated to them is most important to him. Years, AAV, winning.

5/85 is pretty close to recent market value, but a bit longer than the Rangers are generally comfortable going. Sounds like a good target.

you have to let guys walk to give opportunities to your farm system.

'Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants' is odd. For completists only.

Other than that, agreed. ‘Innervisions’ and ‘Talking Book’ are absolute masterpieces. ‘Music of Mind’ is too, Berry Gordy didn’t get it at the time. So no pub, or singles released. Marvin’s ’What’s Goin On?’ changed his perception of what could be commercially viable.

‘Fulfillingness’ First Finale’ and ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ are just a notch below the other 3, imo. Still great. SITKOL should probably have been shortened to 12 songs. You can really tell that Malcolm Cecil and Bob Margouleff weren’t manning the producer boards on that album.

I don't see it.

Right, now I think it’s going to be something like Ogando, Colby, Harrison, Holland, Feliz with Feldman as the long man/6th starter. Depth for the year would go something like Hurley, Neil Ramirez, Martin Perez and maybe Erlin/Weiland.

That’s ridiculous depth. I thought the Rangers would try to consolidate the depth into a #2 type pitcher at the trade deadline this year, and while that hasn’t happened (yet), I think it’s looking likely that something like this happens this offseason.

this seems the most realistic

and the best for our longterm plans. Committing big money to a SP might not be in the works considering we have to resign Hambone soon and decisions on Kinsler/Napoli so on.

I don't see how the Rangers DON'T commit big dollars to SP.

If they had designs on letting CJ go, they needed to bring in Ubaldo as a low-cost alternative.

They need CJ for the next few years, and they need to trade for someone better than CJ, either next offseason, or next ASB.

I think Hambone is the guy they let go when the decision for a long-term deal hits. The team’s priority seems to be run prevention. They’ve had a run of good luck in that they haven’t had to pay top dollar for that, but I don’t think their priorities change when it becomes the top-dollar component of the team.

I’m glad FACE is having one of his best seasons this year, and I totally want him to ratchet it up another notch for the stretch run, but I’m just as glad that FACE comes off the books after 2013, and maybe that will allow the Rangers just enough cash to keep Hambone around.

But, really, the Rangers don’t have much of a choice but to run in the red the next couple of years to remain the odds-on favorite in the West. When FACE is done, maybe that brings them back to break-even.

They could move Murphy to avoid his arbitration salary, but that only clears ~$2M. Maybe Yorvit can be traded this offseason?

We'll make a big run for Darvish

If we don’t get Darvish, would the team rather resign CJ at huge money or go with Feliz? On one hand, it’s hard to imagine the Rangers letting Lee, Wilson, and Lewis go in consecutive seasons without signing any FA starters. It’s still hard to imagine the Rangers having so much pitching depth that we don’t have to sign a FA starter.

What I find interesting about the Ubaldo deal...

The Red Sox and Yankees are desperate for a starter and the Rangers are always looking for a top end guy. And none of them were serious players on Ubaldo…

Cleveland may end up really regretting this deal.

by Brad on Jul 31, 2011 9:22 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah, I can't decide.

It’s an interesting risk, at the very least, but I almost feel like the teams involved in the rumors say more than the prospects that ended up being involved.

His contract is 'worth' it if he keeps pitching at this level.

I think it’s an issue of risk of blowup. If you’re Bos/NY/Tex right now, you feel good about your chances of making the playoffs and don’t need to take that risk. They probably feel safer taking the risks on their own prospects.

Schafer has been pretty underwhelming ever since getting called up to the majors after the short stint in AAA.

I’ve heard of Oberholtzer, but I don’t know much about the others.

A bit disappointing, really. I’d liked for JD to have beaten that…though I’m not sure the Astros would trade one of their stars to Texas.

by GhettoBear04 on Jul 31, 2011 9:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Good, but not great, pitchers

Apparently 9, 26, and 27 on Atlanta’s rankings coming into 2011. Oberholzer’s a 23-year old lefty doing decently in AA, Clemens the same but 22 and a righty. Both profile as nothing more than back-end starters, although Clemens could be a late reliever. Abreu is 26 in AAA, striking people out but walking tons while serving up homers.

JD easily could’ve beaten that without even dipping into the Wieland/Erlin level of prospects. Have to think, though, that as GB said, Ed Wade doesn’t want to deal with Texas.

by Outworlder47 on Jul 31, 2011 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Wieland is probably better than the pitchers in there

Borbon at this point is still better than Schafer, he’s barely got a 600 OPS in AAA last two years.
