Around SBN: On Hazards And Hulks And Tigers, Oh My!

8/12 AM OT

I was watching a show on The Science Channel last night about how a genetic mutation (delta-32) makes people immune to HIV.

The geneticist researching it timed its adoption to around 700 years ago in the bubonic plague era.  His hypothesis was that the gene would also be resistant to the plague, so he spent a few years tracking people who could trace their lineage to that time and then tested them for the mutation.

In his results, he found that 50% more of the subjects he tested carried delta-32, which seems to support his theory.  The next step is to try and figure out how to synthesize a treatment based on these findings, I guess.

It was pretty cool.  I'm sure they filmed that a while back.  I wonder where that research stands now...

SARS

PIG FLU

Ecoli

and many more.

I’m not trying to diminish the importance of HIV and AIDS, but it just seems like a regular run of the mill disease today compared to say, 20-25 years ago. Obviously this is in thanks to the constant progression of science and discovery, trial and error, and so on, but AIDS doesn’t scare the the public today as it did back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Public awareness of HIV transmittal has risen a lot in the last 30 years

I think that also helps. One of the things they discussed in the show was that the blood supply from donations was already tainted by the time they figured how it was being spread. The public perception when it first hit was that you wouldn’t get it if you didn’t bang dudes. The general public knows better now (or shit, I hope they do, anyway)

by chief on Aug 12, 2011 6:54 AM CDT up reply actions

From what I heard

The public perception when it first hit was that they had no idea how it was transmitted and so people were afraid they may catch it from random stuff like drinking after people or from the air. Then we went into the whole “don’t bang dudes” phase. Thankfully most have some real education about the subject now.

disease transmission numbers are as high as ever

about 50,000 new HIV cases per year. The main difference is with the new antiretroviral therapies, the disease has become much more of a manageable chronic illness.

the lessened viral loads make transmission less likely, yet the infection levels stay the same. I might attribute that to people not being as cautious as they should be because they’re under the impression that hiv isnt’t that big of a problem anymore. that, and cultural and ethnic boundaries about discussing illness and std prevention openly.

by GhettoBear04 on Aug 12, 2011 11:15 AM CDT up reply actions

basically

people are acquiring resistance to vanc and other antibiotics (wiki says it better than i can at the moment)

through its (over?) use

MDs are required to list why they are choosing to use Vanc in certain circumstances, but one of the options is basically “other” without a reason needed…we track these here at the hospital and i think they are reported up to the feds or JCAHO? but maybe not

not to say there are not situations where it SHOULD be used…there are.

i just cant quite wrap my head around MDs, in general, not believing literature or changing practices even when there is an overwhelming amount of literature out there about certain things. or when it is “best practice” per a number of organizations out there basically because they have “always done it this way”

Some of it is this.

I have to say, it is changing. Especially amongst the younger GP’s, they/we simply don’t give out nearly as many scripts for upper respiratory infections and the like as before. Part of that is there’s growing evidence that Ab’s don’t do as much as advertised even in some cases of bacterial infection…your body can actually do a decent job fighting them off for some types of bacteria.

Unsure.

Probably something off of IMed that fits in with the type of research I want to do. It’s too hard to stay in GP and do research, from what I understand. Plus, that probably will help make up the salary cut I’ll take in order to do research.

based on where you are i think you shouldnt find it TOO hard to be part time

we have (specialists mainly) who are part time around in our area (e texas) and are either “off” the rest of the time or are in another location and have a PA cover on the days they are not there

but for your research you have to be in a large metro area prob…

Not the research, necessarily.

There are plenty of universities with basic science/biochemistry departments that are in small towns and still have the equipment and expertise that I’d likely need access to. The bigger issue is that I will likely be focusing on one disease, so unless that disease ends up being diabetes or HTN, I’ll probably need to be in a large medical center to be able to get the patient numbers I need.

There has been some concern about VRE and a few reported cases of a horizontal transfer of Vanc-resistance to MRSA, but it hasn’t turned out to be the concern that it was feared to be in the early aughts.

If it’s as you say, that’s frustrating. On the one hand, I believe MD’s should try to adhere to evidenced based medicine as much as possible. On the other hand, I understand that there’s so very much data that’s constantly coming out and tinkering with guidelines that it makes it difficult to keep up and adapt in every area.

IIRC, the HIV drugs are still $TEXAS.

by Closure GT on Aug 12, 2011 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

These are not the same things.

Swine Flu was more of a severe variant of regular flu season that ended up having it’s worst effects in a different subset of the population than normal.

E.Coli has a wide range of disease types depending on what strain you get. The issue that E.Coli has is that it can pick up nasty gene (clusters) from other more deadly, but less common bacteria.

HIV/AIDS is at the point where people who are infected have a similar life span to those who don’t have it, but it’s incorrect to suggest they lead ‘normal’ lives. They have to take a host of expensive drugs, generally for a long time since most who get it are young, and there’s always the threat that they can suffer from the immunosuppressive effects.

The mutation listed in the post is one of a few that have been discovered that make people immune to HIV, or certain strains of HIV. It has to to do with the HIV (co)-receptors.

In 2005, MRSA killed more people than HIV according to the CDC. But that says as much about MRSA as it does about HIV.

Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

by knockoutking on Aug 12, 2011 7:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I have read them.

They are ok. Turtledove likes to tell his stories from the point of view of 5-10 characters, and he rotates around from one character to another. This has the benefit of showing many different points of view and showing how the wars impact the lives of many different kinds of people. But it can be hard to read at times with having to keep track of who is who and what they were doing the last time you read about them, and the constant rotation can kind of become a grind since each section is only 3-5 pages long and then you switch again. The storyline itself is plausable and interesting, but some of the characters are rather pointless. All-in-all, I was glad that I read them because I enjoyed the alternate timeline, but I would not read them again. I actually sold my copies back. So if you can get them cheap or if you can borrow them somehow, I would recommend going that route. An 11 book series can get pretty expensive.

I liked John Birmingham's Axis of Time Trilogy.

An allied aircraft carrier fleet from 2021 gets sent back to 1942. Most of the ships join the US forces, but some of them get captured by the Axis powers, so there is a scramble to put the 2021 technology to use first. The changes to WWII are interesting as are the societal impacts of having a diverse crew from 2021 sent back to the 40’s. It’s funny to read about people in the 40’s being exposed to Metallica. That is probably my favorite alternate history series.

I have also enjoyed Robert Conroy’s single year books like 1901 and 1862, but they would be better if he wasn’t so slavish to making the books cover just over one year in time. That is not a lot of time to fight and resolve a war, so things seem to rushed sometimes. But they are still worth reading.

by crazy86er on Aug 12, 2011 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

That's not really alternate history, that's science fiction.

by DFWAg on Aug 12, 2011 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

The aircraft carrier and most of the supporting ships are fully manned by US staff.

Some of the allied ships that are not close to the epicenter of “the event” get thrown far away. One of them gets thrown into the middle of the Himalayas. The crews on those ships are wiped out by “the event” and the ships get taken.

Anyone want to hire a Java developer

who spends too much time in OT threads?

by chief on Aug 12, 2011 7:14 AM CDT reply actions

Why would I hire myself?

Actually, my company may be looking. We do lots of GWT and lots of backend ETL processing. We pretty much span the gambit of new age Java technologies (so we don’t fuck w/ annoying shit like Spring, Struts, etc). We have a strong focus on performance and grid computing. Our role is business intelligence and we run the show in our own little area. We have our own repo, our own servers, etc. Interested?

I may not be around the OT threads all day, so just send me a PM on my github account and we'll exchange emails:

https://github.com/cretz. We’re in North Dallas (basically at George Bush and the Tollway) and are definitely looking. Don’t give a shit about experience, just give a shit about give-a-shitness and perseverence (except for when on LSB at work of course, which is cool; boss lady is ignorant; we run the show).

by booyakasha on Aug 12, 2011 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

I've done some GWT

It’s a lot easier than doing Ajax by hand. In my current position, we’re mainly servlets/JSP/web services, etc on a custom classloading framework with an absolute ridiculous database design that degrades performance severely. I’m usually the one who gets tasked to experiment with new/different technologies because I have a pretty good innate ability to jump into the middle of something and figure out how to use it.

We are Java coders in a .Net shop, so we are the stepchildren. We definitely get to use any/all sorts of open source stuff we want.

2. This is the first time I can remember having a dream that was not something new or different. It was more like a vivid memory. It was a little disconcerting.

OK, going to shit up the thread here - I'm in a keeper league and we keep two guys.

I need y’alls helps because I dont’t want to suck again this year. Keep two, cut one of:
Payton Mannings
Roddy White
Frank Gore

I’m picking sixth, so I expect I can get a tony romo or possibly even payton… definitely a Shaub. Is the rb ‘more important’ than the qb in some ways? i think the dropoff from Gore to say Mendenhall is larger than Payton to Romo, and really, the name of the game is running backs. INPuT!

Peyton definitely had a down year (despite the yards)

but with Gore’s injury history, neither feels like a particularly good bet. the bust potential for gore is greater, but i’m just not going to get an rb of that caliber lower in the draft.

Do i prefer a White-Gore-Shaub triumvirate or White-Manning-Mendenhall/McFadden?

Ok, I can admit I put that in your mouth (TWSS)

but bringing up that argument seems pointless unless you think Gore isn’t going to be consistent.

And Gonzalez doesn’t need to slow down. He just needs to show up on 3rd down for his catch and in the red zone.

And back on point, I think the Julio comparison to Larry would be spot on.

Gore will be productive when healthy.

Except he played 11 games last year, which is always a concern for running backs. I know Michael Turner had a good year following an 11-game 2009 season, but I’d consider Gore scary for health.

by jonthefon on Aug 12, 2011 10:36 AM CDT up reply actions

What?

Why would arguing that White won’t experience much of a drop-off in performance have anything to do with Gore? I’m more inclined to keep the top-end WR because of who you can get as a replacement at WR vs RB. And really, we’re comparing a guy who hasn’t played a single down of pro football to a top 3 WR in the NFL?

Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.

He's in the top 3 now

He was not in his rookie year. That’s what I’m comparing. I’m saying nothing about Fitzgerald presently. Comparing Larry now to Julio is silly.

"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz

by AceJC on Aug 12, 2011 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Fitzgerald still had the skills, though.

Also that was a pretty different situation… those Cardinals weren’t anything approaching a complete team. They had Josh McCown starting at QB and Emmitt and Troy Hambrick in the backfield. That doesn’t sound very similar to the Falcons.

Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.

by colonialbob on Aug 12, 2011 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly. Larry had McCown throwing him the ball...

Julio will have an established QB, and another option probably getting doubled.

How does that set up worse for Jones?

"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz

by AceJC on Aug 12, 2011 10:50 AM CDT up reply actions

I could just as easily say

the Falcons aren’t going to feed Jones because they’ve already got Turner, White, and Gonzalez on offense. Jones might do well, I haven’t followed the Falcons at all so far. The comparison doesn’t really work, though.

Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.

Nope.

I’m pretty hesitant to compare rookies to anybody, since there’s just so much variability. Perhaps a few games into the season I’d be comfortable making those types of comparisons… which of course would be way too late for fantasy purposes.

The funny thing is I guarantee I’ll end up with Jones in a league after this conversation.

hmm

footballg guys most recent 3 dynasty rankings list gore as:
overall #16
individually: 12, 9, 30

they talk about his workhorse ability, interaction w/ passing game and injury history

roddy white:
24 overall
36, 27, 11

discuss the impact jones/jaquizz rodgers will have on him (targets wise), and one expects him to continue on current pace

they also rank peyton as 29 overall and 64/16/17 individually

redraft:
gore = 16 overall
white = 11 overall
manning = 25 overall

so maybe you keep gore/white lol

I think the thing that would benefit him the most is seeing what the teams in front of him are keeping, and base my decision on that.

Keeping Roddy and Gore and dropping Manning may be the best thing to do if most or all of the teams in front of him in the draft are keeping their QBs.

are Vick, Brady, and Rivers, and they’re being kept for sure. Manning will be the top QB available if I cut him, and then it drops to Romo/Roethlesburger/Shaub will be the guys available for me.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Aug 12, 2011 10:51 AM CDT up reply actions

It's a lot of things, not just that.

Injury makes Manning a concern. THAT’S uncertainty. So Schaub, I would think, is a better position than Manning. Plus they should put up similar numbers as Peyton will throw more TDs, but also more INT and the yds will be the same.

Gore is also more established than Mendenhall and McFadden, so that’s also a help.

"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz

by AceJC on Aug 12, 2011 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, I agree with you on the Manning part, sorta.

Manning’s injury could be taken as a serious concern.

I don’t think McFadden’s particularly proven, but Mendenhall certainly is, with two straight 1000+ yard rushing seasons, and he’s still young and going to get a lot of carries.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Aug 12, 2011 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Those two being young is a plus

for sure, especially as a RB, but it cuts both ways.

And I would say “certainly” on Mendenhall. He’s had two years, and that’s it. And he also is not involved in the passing game at all, which gives Gore a huge advantage in red zone and additional pts.

Sure he will.

But the Atlanta offense will score more TDs overall as a unit, which probably means the number of TDs picked up by Jones isn’t directly subtracted from White. He’s also replacing Jenkins’ handful of TDs.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Aug 12, 2011 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Gore also catches the ball well.

Like really well. You can tack on another 30 yards per game to Gore’s already 80 yards of rushing.

And while White has had an amazing amount of TDs the last two years, he’s not going to keep that up with a better receiving corps.

"I don't really like pitchers." - Nelson Cruz

by AceJC on Aug 12, 2011 10:09 AM CDT up reply actions

And also Gore has a hilarious injury history.

And I’d say that finding a productive RB on waivers or late on is much easier than finding a productive WR.

I don’t think White’s going to have too many TDs vultured from him by Jones. That offense is going to get better anyway, so the overall increase in TDs scored will keep his TD count somewhat afloat.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Aug 12, 2011 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

by AceJC on Aug 12, 2011 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Well, first of all

I’m not enthralled with the idea of picking a RB in the first or second round who missed a fair bit of time the previous year with injury.

And even before that, he played 14 in 2008 and 2009. Yeah, missing a couple of games isn’t that big a deal. But it doesn’t seem like that happens to the other stud RBs, outside of Turner.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Aug 12, 2011 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Take LSB, for instance.

Even on “wide” mode the comment section is under 1000px wide. If I had my browser maximized, it would be taking up much, much more screen space — and doing nothing with that screen space but showing ads.

“Is the devil” is a generalization coming from growing up on a Mac where there wasn’t even a maximize/full screen feature for the longest time, but there are a ton of apps that simply don’t need that much screen space, yet a ton of people roll with all-maximized-windows-all-the-time.

And then you can’t do stuff like stick your Gameday window during a day game off the corner of your monitor so you can see the score the whole time even while typing up an email or report or whatever.

I probably wouldn’t have maximized screens. They’re pretty small though and several of my windows need to be as big as possible. Now if I had this setup….

by DFWAg on Aug 12, 2011 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions

LSB is in an annoying-to-me class of webpages where the content size has nothing to do with your screen size.

I greatly prefer ones that actually use the extra space if you have a bigger window, instead of just throwing ads up there.

by Closure GT on Aug 12, 2011 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Its a hell of a lot harder to make it fit every possible screen size though

Its much easier to just have a max width, so I can always feel for anyone who doesn’t want to go through that.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. But by then, also, the first acid distractions entered: the TV flickered; the cracks in the wall started to move; the hand soap started to breathe — those sorts of things. Plus I was drawn to the outdoor garden between innings. Rain was near, I sensed." - A.J. Daulerio

Yeah, but you should know that things never work as smoothly as they're supposed to work

and percentages for width generally never work like you want them do.

Browsers support them quite well these days.

There are a few gotchas to be careful of, but on a site that’s otherwise as up-to-date as SBN it surprises me that they aren’t used.

by Closure GT on Aug 12, 2011 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

If I had that much screen space

I wouldn’t worry about maximizing things so much.

by DFWAg on Aug 12, 2011 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Those are pretty sweet and I've always wanted it just because its so cool looking

but if I ever did it, the frame of each monitor would annoy the hell out of me in the end.

Yeah

I’d have to find a monitor that had as thing a frame as possible. Unfortunately that monitor is probably expensive as hell.

but with 2 monitors, its also not so important for me. Plus, I prefer having one big window even if there is a lot of white space. If I don’t need to be looking at 2 things on one monitor, then I’d rather have the window centered.

Could someone explain to me the Clinton surplus?

I was randomly looking it up. Okay, so I don’t understand how it is considered a surplus when the govt doesn’t count the money they borrowed from themselves. Isn’t that still a debt?

I've given up trying to explain or understand government spending....

The whole thing is so convoluted….I really think both parties have done their best to make this so complicated that they can blame each other for the mess and, in the end, both are actually right.

Explain to me how you increase spending on projects/programs but still call it a cut because you didn’t spend as much as you intended to spend…..

There was no real surplus once you subtract excess SS contributions

They used excess social security contributions to fund current govt spending (both rep. & dem. administrations do it) without regard to the massive unfunded govt. liabilities out there (i.e. Medicare.Medicaid and SS) The “social security trust fund” (SSTF) is nothing but a promise by the Fed. govt to pay the SSTF back for what it has taken. I actually predicted a meltdown about 5 years or so ago in 2013-15 when SS and one of the others go cash flow negative (according to the then-current CBO forecasts — which are always hilariously optimistic)

This was a key point in the 2000 election (Gore wanted to put the excess SS contributions in his famous “lock box” rather than finance current spending with them)

Enron has nothing on Congress. If the CBO put out GAAP financial statements we’d all move to Australia

by thedudeabides on Aug 12, 2011 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

which is to say in answer to your question

social security contributions by working adults have always exceeded spending for current retirees and the govt has spent the excess each year without saving anything. With the boomers retireing, all the big entitlement programs go cash flow negative where to fund current benefit levels they have to spend more than they take in.

Read “the coming generational storm” by Scott Burns fo the DMN. Everyone here should read it. It is short and if you are 18-40 you are going to get screwed so you should understand the issue, vote, lobby etc. accordingly. It is a massive generational transfer of wealth from the working young to boomer retirees (who voted for themselves retirement benefits far greater than what their contributions funded)

some small-ish girl, kinda cute, dressed rather ratty with messed up hair gets to the baggage claim and has a limo driver waiting for her. When she approaches him, he says “Oh, I thought that might be you!” I didn’t recognize her, but the sign he was holding said “Love” (pseudonym maybe). People looking messy like her don’t get limo pickups unless they are an actor or musician or something. Wish I had gotten a pic.

Went to pick up my roommate at the airport in college and we’re walking back to the car and there’s this couple walking in front of us in a shouting argument. They get to their car and as we pass them I recognized her and just blurted out “Hey, you’re Minnie Driver!” It stopped their argument. I probably saved their marriage.

one of the very very very few benefits of Oklahoma

you get your license plates and driver licenses at Tag Agencies (which, from what I can tell, are privately owned businesses licensed by the State to do that stuff)…because there are 10 trillion Tag Agencies, there’s never ever a line and you walk out of there with your new license in hand. To get a license, it takes about 10-15 minutes. Update your tag? 5 minutes tops.

Cool fantasy baseball story time, bros.

You know how in leagues with MI positions, it’s supposed to be hard to find competent players to fill the MI spot in leagues which are 12 or more?

Well, in one league I’ve managed to pick up Weeks, Kipnis, Escobar and Ackley to go with Uggla and Elvis, who I picked as my starting 2B and SS respectively.

The moral of the story? MI heaven actually exists.

Ok, so SBN is a tricky little bitch, but I've got it.

Just put this in your address bar and hit enter and watch the bikini chick disappear (at least for me on FF 5):

javascript:document.getElementById("blog-interior").attributes["style"].nodeValue="cursor: auto; background-image: none !important;";void(0);

by booyakasha on Aug 12, 2011 12:22 PM CDT reply actions

Or if you need it to work on every page instead of just fanposts, use this (works on frontpage too):
javascript:document.getElementsByTagName("body")[1-1].attributes["style"].nodeValue="cursor: auto; background-image: none !important;";void(0);

by booyakasha on Aug 12, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions

And one more, version 3 that should be cross-browser, cross-page bikini removal:
javascript:document.getElementsByTagName("body")[1-1].setAttribute("style", "cursor: auto; background-image: none !important;");void(0);

by booyakasha on Aug 12, 2011 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions

It's actually a workaround for SBN's post formatting.Typing [0] in

They were mad that Me and my three Texan buddies were

hooking up with his ex (not that we ever heard of him) and her friends… we were just drinking and hanging out at her pool and it was like midnight. We decided to leave since they were also armed and they chased us but I alluded them in my car.

They found us like 30 minutes later and surrounded us while we were in my car (trying to gather our thoughts in a church parking lot). Some guy walked up and punched me in the face while I was sitting in my car. I started laughing and he got this oh fuck look on his face and started back pedaling. They then tried to block me in and started pounding my car so I floored it and ran one guy over and he flew over my car and I clipped another guy. We then hauled ass to Shreveport like 2 hours away for some gambling and eventually sleep. Found out the next day that the one guy a nailed directly broke his legs and he was one of the chicks brother… oh well.

But I didnt feel like buying a 2nd grate to put in my smoker so I just got some sausage from Fredricksburg(forget the bran…it was from Central Market) and threw it in around the brisket.

I really should’ve started doing this before noon.

So my main fantasy football league that I've been in 10 years just had our annual pre-draft lunch.

We discuss rule changes, figure out where and when to have the draft, etc.

We also draw for picks since it’s a re-draft… and I got 12th. In a 12 team league.

11th last year, 10th the year before… I don’t think I’ve had a top 6 pick in 7 or 8 years.

Meh.

I would almost always prefer the top pick.

For the first overall player and best potential difference maker and then back to back in the 2/3, 4/5, 6/7, etc.

If you do your job well any pick can work. But getting a true stud in his prime is hard to do from the 12/13 slot.

You have to actively manage. It makes it a harder league. People get lazy with deep benches and the league is less competitive.

As much as Vick and Hillis were great pickups last year, I usually end up doing well in leagues because of my draft strategy.

My favorite sandwich

brown four brats in a pan, remove
sautee one whole white onion in pan until caramelization begins to occur
put brats back in and add one bottle of Shiner Bock beer
cook until beer and onions are reduced to saucy consistency
grill two pieces of buttered french bread on both sides
remove brats and rest; slice diagonally
place brat slices on grilled bread, spoon beer-onion sauce on top
top with parmesean cheese and a smear of avacado
pepper to taste

I’m going to the store after work.

Hmm ... here are some things I learned:

(I composed this post as I watched it)
- So the penis loses sensitivity during middle age? Interesting.
- Eww…a cadaver penis. That is not pretty at all.
- Penis recovery time is at its peak at age 17. Probably not surprising to any guy.
- Only 15 percent of men do regular testicular exams. Bad boys. Get on this.
- 30 years old. Ok. This is closer to my age. Curvature sets in? What?
- Peri-ED sets in at 40. More predominant if the man is overweight. Also, the penis looks smaller for overweight men. Well, duh.
- Healthy libido diet includes 30 pct healthy fat, lots of fruits and veg, red meat only once a week. That just sounds like a normal healthy diet.
- Once they got into 50 and above, I really wasn’t all that interested.

I go back and forth on her

some times she looks really sexy and other time ‘meh’ is about all I can muster.

Maybe someone can explain something to me...

I get paid on the 1st and 15th. Both fell on Mondays this month. Last pay period I was paid on Thurs (7/28) at midnight (i.e. Friday). But this pay period, I didn’t get paid on Thurs (last night) at midnight even though Monday is the 15th. What the fuck? Do I have to wait until Monday? It is direct deposit, so can they even pay me tonight at midnight or even Sunday at midnight?

I haven't had a summons in about 2 years. Will probably get one soon

I’ve had about 3 since I was 18. So, 3 in 8 years

convicted of man slaughter

it was not the predimated kind that the prosecution insisted it was. I think the only reason they tried him for capital murder is because he was black and in Kaufman.

Interesting.

I was hoping that you were going to tell us that a witness broke down during cross-ex and admitted that he had done it. Or that a lawyer busted into the courtroom with last second information that would prove the guy innocent.

but why isn’t it ever unfair in my favor?

Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.

It's kinda cool.

The first parts boring but once you get in the court room it’s cool. The last one was a girl suing a tote the note dealership. Seemed boring. My first one was a guy who, if I remember correctly, killed his epileptic step son. I was not chosen. They asked me some questions and I ended up telling them about my aunts murder. I had a feeling I wouldn’t be picked. I really wanted to, though.

Not chosen, told work I had been, took the day off.

Ranking the Coen brothers movies:

http://www.slate.com/id/2300656/

Averaging all of the rankings, you get a list that looks something like this:
1. Fargo
2. Raising Arizona
3. Miller’s Crossing
4. No Country for Old Men
5. The Big Lebowski
6. O Brother, Where Art Thou?
7. True Grit
8. Barton Fink
9. Blood Simple
10. Burn After Reading
11. A Serious Man
12. The Hudsucker Proxy
13. The Man Who Wasn’t There
14. Intolerable Cruelty
15. The Ladykillers

I’d swap 4 and 5, and I didn’t like Barton Fink but did like Hudsucker Proxy, but pretty good list overall.

Yeah I looked at the wiki on it.

Apparently I should watch it.

I don’t even remembering hearing about it… the title sounded vaguely familiar, but I couldn’t have told you what it was about or who was in it.

I thought it was a chick flick based on the title.

Personally

I’d put 5 & 6 higher than 3 & 4.

by DFWAg on Aug 12, 2011 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions

7

I go back and forth on. I’m not sure it’s as great a movie as it is that I just love Bridges in it

by DFWAg on Aug 12, 2011 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

4, yes; 3, no.

Though really it’s impossible to pick between Lebowski and Miller’s Crossing. Entirely different beasts.

by Closure GT on Aug 12, 2011 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Good list

I’d put 5 higher and 10 lower.

The only one of those I haven't seen is 14.

A quick look at IMDB shows I probably never will.

crazy flick called CRIMEWAVE was on cable recently

written by the Coens, directed by Sam Raimi, really weird

Ian Kinsler is leading the majors in RotPotA.

by Schoolly_D on Aug 12, 2011 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I've done my list before

but anyways… Raising WAY down, Serious Man WAY up (as in #1), and I’d put True Grit up a few more spaces… beyond that, I’m largely OK with this.
