Rangers claim pitcher Tim Wood from the Pirates

Evan Grant just tweeted that the Rangers have claimed righthanded pitcher Tim Wood off of waivers from the Pirates, and have optioned him to AAA.

Wood has a career 4.50 ERA in 58 major league relief innings, and has walked 33 batters, while striking out 28 in the majors.

In the minors this season, he has a 2.84 ERA, with 32 Ks and 12 walks in 44.1 IP.

So, yeah...I'm not exactly sure what this was about, other than the Rangers had a 40 man roster spot open.  Wood, I suspect, will get dropped from the 40 man roster at some point in the next few weeks, but for now, he's an arm available in the minors.

UPDATE -- Per folks on Twitter, Wood was designated for assignment, the Rangers made the prevailing waiver claim, and acquired him for a player to be named later or cash.

Guess I should have said "If this guy plays really well for us"

His stat line does look good, but I haven’t seen him play personally, and there’s no guarantee that he maintains this level of good-ness. Apologies.

Pittsburgh should know better.

If JD puts in a claim you pull your player the damn back off waivers.

Dammit

I just realized I made a typo.

They could NOT take him back off of waivers.

Once he’s DFA’d, you have 10 days to waive him, trade him, or release him.

One year and one day ago

We got Alex Cora. That move obviously sent it to the WS, this is to put us over the top.

If I had a gun to my head and had to pick one pitcher to pitch a game to save my life.... I'd pick 1999 Rick Helling.

Dear Rangers, Make me forget about 2010.......

Facebook started this bit

Where it tells you what you posted on this date 1 year ago, etc…

Yesterday my anniversary posts were:

2010: By picking up Alex Cora the Rangers are definately going to the World Series…

2009: Texas Rangers next year finally fucking got here

Oh yeah

I saw one that basically said “On this day, two years ago, you wrote about how badly sunburnt you were.” Two years later, around this time, did the same thing…guess who’s not learning their lesson.

Is this our version of "Make A Wish" for doomed ballplayers

We take some poor Pirate, show him what a pennant feels like, then let him move on?

Maybe

Maybe the Rangers think that they can help improve his performance and make him a better pitcher in our system.

by Ryan2907 on Aug 18, 2011 4:33 PM CDT reply actions

Nope.

They obviously think he sucks and will never amount to anything.

More than decent AAA #s

8 innings in the show is way too small a sample to say anything.
