Evan Grant just tweeted that the Rangers have claimed righthanded pitcher Tim Wood off of waivers from the Pirates, and have optioned him to AAA.
Wood has a career 4.50 ERA in 58 major league relief innings, and has walked 33 batters, while striking out 28 in the majors.
In the minors this season, he has a 2.84 ERA, with 32 Ks and 12 walks in 44.1 IP.
So, yeah...I'm not exactly sure what this was about, other than the Rangers had a 40 man roster spot open. Wood, I suspect, will get dropped from the 40 man roster at some point in the next few weeks, but for now, he's an arm available in the minors.
UPDATE -- Per folks on Twitter, Wood was designated for assignment, the Rangers made the prevailing waiver claim, and acquired him for a player to be named later or cash.
