I'll take this year over that.
The pop-out comment is snarky, but being really toolsy doesn’t necessarily mean being as good as you can be.

I know you're being wry, but I'm over whatever concerns I had about his popping up.
First, over the last several years, including that one, he has not been in the top quintile of IFFB% — and I would think that would be a good measure of the rate at which players are truly popping up — which leads me to think there was always some confirmation bias at work here.
Second, while I do think there were some reasons to be concerned with his swing and approach going forward in 2009, a lot of was part of a larger concern with the organizational hitting philosophy. This was punctuated by the seeming lesson of Hank Blalock’s transformation from promising young hitter to free swinging failure. I now doubt that approach was the most significant cause of Blalock’s decline, but as a fan of the team, I was dreading anything like that happening with Kinsler. It hasn’t, and overall, I find the team’s approach at the plate to be more pleasing.
I'll take it

Horrible writing
This article is horrible. Perryman buried the lead. This article is about Kinsler being a five tool player but he doesn’t mention him until the third paragraph. He doesn’t make a unique point about Kinsler. This is just quoting someone else’s article about five tool players in general. He needs an editor. The penchant for the run-on sentence is damn near unbearable.

I do
kind of suck as a writer. For what it’s worth, though, my main point was just to link what I thought was an interesting article. I was mostly just using Kinsler as a tie-in for the Rangers.

Where are these run-on sentences?
Do you mean long sentences? That’s not the same thing.

I disagree with Brett about not being able to distinguish between range and arm
UZR breaks those things out into components. I don’t understand why Carson didn’t as well. You could tack on the positional adjustment to each component but otherwise it would have worked. The only thing is you might want to figure out what a different positional adjustment for each component. Like a 3B ARM score would be higher than a 2B ARM score but maybe you adjust higher for a 2B range score.
But this also got me thinking
that when people say 5 tools, they are usually talking about CFers or at least SS where all 5 tools are needed. If you aren’t one of those positions, are you really a 5 tool player? I guess you could be in RF or LF and only be there because someone even rangier is in CF. But not sure I like all of these 2B on the list
wait, other than maybe first base
what skills don’t matter? You need strong arms in every outfield position, catcher, 3b, and even 2b. Defensive skills are necessary everyone. Speed is an asset on the field and on the basepaths. I guess maybe at 1b you don’t need all 5. But if you’re quick, field well, and have a great arm, you probably won’t be put at first…

You could say maybe speed for a catcher
since they only need it on the basepaths.

well, speed has quite a bit of value on the basepaths.
maybe that is the issue. While contact and power tools are clearly batting skills, and glovework and arm are clearly defense skills, speed is relevant to both sides of the ball (but the least important on each)

You don't need a strong arm for 2B
And when people measure arm, it’s also arm strength and accuracy on long throws, which doesn’t come into play at 2B.
For 3B, range is necessary but you aren’t covering the same huge expanse you are at SS. There is also no “range” at C.
does anyone think hamilton will have another mvp year?
he’s having a solid year, but it’s kind of depressing that he’s not repeating last year’s performance.

If he doesnt miss 6 weeks earlier this year
and say he puts up the same numbers during those 6 weeks like he has the rest of the year, he is in the conversation
Patriotism is the willingness to kill and be killed for trivial reasons.
If he played exactly how he played in those 6 weeks and every other facet of the game
he’d probably be behind MY. You could argue that they are basically on the same level but hard to argue he’d be ahead of Young
