Wednesday a.m. Rangers stuff

DETROIT - AUGUST 02: Mike Adams #37 of the Texas Rangers pitches in the eight inning of the game against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on August 2, 2011 in Detroit, Michigan. The Tigers defeated the Rangers 6-5. (Photo by Leon Halip/Getty Images)

Drew Davison's game story in the S-T talks about the blown lead by Mike Adams, who allowed a home run to a lefthanded hitter for the first time since May, 2010.

T.R. Sullivan's game storyhas quotes from Adams, who says he left the pitch that Brennan Boesch hit out of the park up in the strike zone.

Evan Grant has his thoughts on last night's loss.

Richard Durrett has his reactions to the game.

The S-T's notes talk about the bullpen moves and Adrian Beltre and Craig Gentry's status.

Sullivan's notes also hit on the status of players on the d.l., and also talks about the Rangers' players being fired up about the deadline moves the front office made to improve the bullpen.

Evan Grant suggests the St. Louis Cardinals might be interested in taking Arthur Rhodes off the Rangers' hands.

It seems to me like Colby begins more games without command than anyone else on the staff. How does a ML starter leave the pen after warmups with NONE of his pitches working?? Yeah, I know he usually settles down and limits the damage, but still…

Last night was awful, but let's look at some positives

1. The Rangers managed to put up a significant rally in the late innings.
2. Mikey Naps is still in Beast Mode.
3. Our DP combo is still the best in baseball and pulled Colby’s ass out of the fire more than once.
4. Yoshi and Ollie were rock solid.
5. We were making good contact, just not finding holes or, like Ian, just missing an HR.

And even on the Adams HR, which was a huge kick in the nuts….you’ve still gotta give Boesch a ton of credit. He fouled off a lot of pitches until he got the mistake he was looking for.

If things continue this way with Colby mixing in a bad start with every few good starts and Holland continues going the right way with his development, is there any way you can go with Colby in the playoff rotation over Holland?

I think Colby's 2010 experience is the only thing keeping him in the conversation

but if Holland is going to be dominating 4 out of every 5 starts, how do you bump him from the rotation just because of Colby’s experience from last year when he hasn’t looked like the same pitcher all year.

If we can hold off the Angels for the division, Wash and Maddux will definitely go with the 4 best options they have to start games. Right now, one of those would not by Colby. But there are a couple of months left to play …

It really depends on how bad Colby gets.

Wash can’t be so in love with veteranocity that he runs Colby out there to get shelled.

Agree

It’s all up to Colby. If he continues strings of starts like this, no way they let him touch the mound in the postseason. But he has had bad stretches this year, followed by good ones, so with 2 months to go, he can still right his ship and earn back his manager’s confidence.

But if he’s doing this in September while we’re trying to win the division, he’ll burn his bridges and find his way to the bullpen or off the roster for the playoffs.

Other question though is does this recent trend and his overall body of performance this year give JD pause about his option …

by CO Ranger on Aug 3, 2011 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

No

Even if all he does next year is eat up 200+ innings he would be worth the 3.25 mil on his option

by bigsteve on Aug 3, 2011 10:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Doubt it

Its a very affordable option for only 3.25 million. As shaky as Lewis has been, if he only repeats this season next year he’s still a big bargain. If he’s more like his 2010 self, he’s a huge bargain. If he gets much worse next year, you’re not eating more than a few million anyways.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. by Gdawg on Aug 3, 2011 10:29 AM CDT up reply actions

He is cheap

But I would imagine that JD at least explores the option of upgrading the spot if possible, and if Colby continues to face-palm it every other night.

Since the contract is really his best attribute (and the innings), they could pick up the option and move him to an NL team (hello SD) for something they like more …

Obviously there’s another third of the season left to go, so no decisions will be made right now, but he’s looking awfully homer prone and his stuff seems to be declining. It might be best for all involved to get him out of the AL and our home park.

Yeah, I wouldn't rule out a trade

at least he's better than ...

Dave Bush

And it’s not an overreaction, if you bothered to read the post and not march off on an agenda. I said there was a lot of season left to go.

He’s leading the league in HRs allowed and his stuff seems to be eroding – his position in a postseason rotation or even with the club next year seems like a reasonable discussion to have on a baseball board

by CO Ranger on Aug 3, 2011 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

There is no agenda

But when you say Colby has “face palmed it every other night” that is not a accurate description.

I don’t know if it was the crazy high expectation people placed on him for some reason or what but the overreaction and the characterization that Colby has sucked this year has gotten out of hand.

Has he been as good as last year…..not even close
Are the HRs maddening to watch…..absolutely

But at the end of the day in most cases the Rangers are in a position to have a shot to win most of the games Colby pitches and several times this year he has shut down opposing teams and won games by himself.

His position with the club next year really isn’t much to talk about because barring injury, the Rangers would be stupid to not pick up his option at the price it is. even if all he does is go out and pitch 200 innings at a 4.5 ERA thats worth 3.25 million.

His spot in the postseason is fine to discuss. At this point in time I would still roll with him and his experience and veteran status does play a big part in my opinion.

by bigsteve on Aug 3, 2011 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Its not that Colby has sucked

Its just that he’s worse than last year and right now, is probably our worst starter in the rotation. You can really call him our 5th best starter because its not like he’s been that bad. But this Rangers team has a lot of talent in it and 4 guys performing better than Colby.

the agenda

comes from taking one line from the post and raging based on that … you characterized my post as dumbfoundingly overreactionary (two non words in a row!), and it wasn’t

i like Colby, and i always root for him, b/c the chances of doing what he’s done aren’t calculable, really

But if his stuff is in fact eroding, and he is in fact this homer prone over long stretches, then I will bet a lot that he doesn’t pitch 200 innings for the Rangers next year. They may well pick up his option, as it’s very affordable. But JD won’t rest on his laurels with mediocre pitching when there are other GM’s out there to fleece.

See how quick they moved to get Bush out of the pen/swing man role?

by CO Ranger on Aug 3, 2011 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem is more that he hasn't shut anybody down much this year

He’s had a few starts over the past month or so where he’s looked good and been able to be in control of the game for the most part. But he’s had more starts where he’s escaping a lot of damage by giving up only solo shots and allowing more baserunners than I’m comfortable with.

In the playoffs, I want a guy who is going to do more than give you a potential quality start. Holland, Harrison, Ogando, and CJ all do this. When they are on the mound this year, they are giving you a good chance at that CG shutout. Colby had that 1 month stretch around May where he looked like that type of a pitcher, but we’re in August now and that Colby hasn’t been here for an extended period of time before or after that stretch.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. There is little to no room for errors in the playoffs.

Homer prone Colby can put the game out of reach with one swing of the bat, right now he’s technically our number 5 pitcher.

by Vicky on Aug 3, 2011 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Colby has given up 1 run or less 6 times this year

Holland….7 times

Colby hasn’t had the sexy CGSO or the mammoth K number games like Holland but he has the same ability to shut teams down that other guys on the staff do

by bigsteve on Aug 3, 2011 10:55 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem can't be ignored....

Yeah, he’s had some good games, but he’s been off a lot all year and right now he’s either treading water or trending downward, while Harry and Dutch are trending upward.

The pressure is on Colby to right the ship.

Here's the thing

Their ERAs are the same right now. Their IP are the same right now. So with 2 of the big things that I believe you look at to judge a pitcher showing them equal, why would you not look at things like their HR/BB/K rates, their GB/FB tendencies, their LOB%, their BABIP, and yes the number of CGs and shutouts. The only statistical edge Lewis has on Holland now is a slightly lower walk rate.

And like mentioned above, you do really have to look at how these stats are trending for both guys. Holland is working his bad starts off of his ledger while Lewis is pretty much staying around the same.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. But I don’t believe Holland will continue his 80% shutout rate.

just like I do believe Colby will get back to having solid-good outings more often than not

by bigsteve on Aug 3, 2011 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions

Its not shutout rates that I'm looking at

The fact that he did have those shut outs is impressive, but if he only goes 7 innings with 0-1 ER, that’s still damn good and its the way he’s been pitching lately. Lewis has had about a month of starts where he was like that earlier in the year and that Lewis hasn’t been seen outside of that time frame. When do you say that this is just the Colby we have now?

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. by Gdawg on Aug 3, 2011 11:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Again you are blowing Colbys way out of the water here

He hasn’t had a months worth of bad starts recently. last night was bad and the one before that was decent-bad.

The two starts before those he went 15.1 IP giving up only 1 run.

This is exactly what I am referring to

From May thru July Colby had 2 horrible starts back to back in June that accounted for 4.2 IP and 15 ER. His ERA in that time outside of those two starts…..2.33. Even with those two horrible starts it was 3.51.

And Holland had gone 5 starts in a row giving up at least 3 runs each before his recent shutout streak so lets tap the brakes thinking hes gonna start going 7 only allowing 1 on a consistent basis

by bigsteve on Aug 3, 2011 11:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I never said he had a months worth of bad starts

I said that there was only one period of time this year where he pitched great, and even then, he was still giving up too many HRs. Since then (I’m looking at May 27), he’s had 13 starts with a 4.50 ERA, 78 IP, a good K/BB rate, and horrible HR numbers. Overall, that’s nothing too bad and isn’t killing us or anything like that.

But again, we’re not comparing him to what a decent rotation option is. We’re comparing him to our other pitchers, namely Holland, for who would be best in a playoff rotation. If you want to look at it start by start for each pitcher, go for it. Holland’s 5 starts in a row stretch was after a CGSO and included a 6 IP and a 7.1 IP game where he only gave up 3 ER.

Now if you want to look at it overall, as in who has been overall this season, you can see that the 2 have been equal on the surface, but the under the surface, Lewis has been pretty luck to not be worse. The HRs are really, really bad.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. by Gdawg on Aug 3, 2011 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd say a 16 start stretch where his ERA was 3.51 is damn good

Especially when two of those starts account for 1.2 of that ERA. 14 out of a 16 start span with a ERA of 2.33 Id say qualifies as great.

Evan says Wash thinks it puts more pressure on the pitcher. Wouldn't a big inning do that more?

and if you’re giving away outs the big inning is less likely.

What should be clear about Ron Washington’s style of play is that he uses the bunt to put pressure on opponents and open up big innings. The Rangers do not play for one run in the middle innings. They play to ensure the maximum amount of pressure on opposing pitchers at all times.

How in the world does bunting in that situation "put pressure" on the opposing pitcher?

He couldn’t get anyone out and couldn’t throw strikes to that point in the inning, so Elvis stands up there and tries to bunt three times in a row. The first two times, the pitcher damn near hit him. You’re relieving pressure on him by giving him a free out. One out changes everything in that inning.

A bunt doesn’t set up the “big inning,” a fucking HIT does.

Torrealba is supposed to know Adams, but he continues to call dumb pitches, (from BBTIA)
but what I didn’t realize was that he hadn’t thrown a change-up — or, to be more precise, a pitch categorized by Pitch f/x as a change-up — since May 22nd. That’s 371 total pitches thrown between that game and last night where there wasn’t a single change-up to be found in the bunch. I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s going to be a good while before we see another one.

I don’t remember hearing about his game calling specifically. I know you should never just throw away a catcher without multiple back-ups because you never know what will happen, but with Napoli here, Torrealba is a back-up catcher. You don’t need a great bat out of your back-up catcher.

partly it is because the Angels have been crazy lucky this year to be within 1 game right now. They’re simply not as good a team as the Rangers on paper, and they haven’t played like it up to this point.

Managers do count for something, and I’m of the opinion that Scioscia is worth a couple of wins on the ledger, and that Wash probably costs one or two over the course of a season. But I can’t support that very well.

Yeah, but it looks like a win-win for both.

Napoli is flourishing in Texas and the Angels replaced him with young, inexpensive players plus they’re a better team than they were last year.

The sabermetric types hate it but the Angels are a better team this year.

A couple

And he played pretty poorly when he was up. It is safe to say the Angels are expecting more from him.

The reason the Angels are playing well is because of Weaver, Haren, Santana and Howie Kendrick primarily with Aybar and Trumbo chipping in. The rest of their lineup and rotation isn’t that impressive.

Just admit it

With Naps in their lineup, they’d be a better team
Trumbo has nothing to do with it, and Conger could be carrying Naps’ jock and catching the day games after night games

You can even give them V.Wells, b/c I’m sure if the Angels had asked, the Jays would have given him to them for nothing but the salary relief.

If we didn’t have Naps and they did have him, the records would be at least reversed

I don't think Wash will do it this week, though, because that would be three days in a row.

So I’m hoping you see Napoli catch Harrison tonight, Torrealba (or Teagarden) catch Ogando tomorrow (Ogando throws a lot of fastballs anyway), and then Napoli again for Holland.

That wouldn’t be a bad thing at all, actually, as long as the rotation stays set up the same way going forward.

CJ— Napoli
Colby— Torrealba (if he has to catch)
Harrison— Napoli
Ogando - Torrealba
Holland

well

between July 5 and July 30
Napoli played 10 games at catcher and 5 at first base and sat 7 times.
Torrealba played 12 times at catcher. and sat 10 times.

Basically, on the 31st the dynamic changed. (well, it changed on the 23rd too, but that didn’t affect Napoli much as Davis and Young basically took over third.) On the 30th we traded Davis, so Young has been every day at third, we brought up Teagarden to catch, and Napoli has dh’ed

what happens from now on? no idea. Hopefully not more Torrealba at DH or catching.

We have him platooning with Moreland at 1B a lot

And there’s also the games where Moreland was forced into the OF due to injuries where Napoli had to play more 1B. On the season, he’s got 19 starts there and 25 games overall. That puts him at starting about 2/3 of the games this year when he’s healthy, and he’s been getting more playing time recently.

Sosh and the sour on Napoli

I agree with Josey that Napoli put up a sub par OBP while getting a lot of AB’s last year.

But there’s a couple of things that don’t jibe with that being why Sosh soured.

First of all, Naps got a lot of action at 1B after the Cuban got hurt. Second, the other guy doing the catching has one of the worst offensive slash lines anyone has ever seen this side of the deadball era (possibly including the deadball era) and third, he hit for > .200 Isolated Slugging and would have had one of the best OPS’s for Catchers in the league had he logged enough innings (he played 70 at 1B and only 66 at C).

I go back to my original hypothesis regarding Naps and Sosh – it’s all about his daughter Taylor :: she had he hots for Naps, and Naps did something at Loyola (where she goes to school) that put him on the manager’s Dead-to-Me list

I’m a bit concerned that Ogando is seeing his workload catch up to him, but I’m not worried about CJ’s little bump. What I’m rally enjoying is seeing the progress Harry and Dutch are making; they both seem to be at that point where the light comes on and stays on.

Tangientially related to yesterday's WAR discussion and Holland/Colby:

Which would you rather get in two starts out of a starter: 8IP + 0IP with an overall FIP of 3.5, or 2 4IP starts with an overall FIP of 3.5?

by Closure GT on Aug 3, 2011 11:34 AM CDT reply actions

Gut reaction? I'll take the 8+0

At least one game didn’t abuse the pen that way.

by bking on Aug 3, 2011 11:35 AM CDT up reply actions

The 1 8 IP start

I don’t know what the win expectancies for both are, but I imagine that you aren’t winning many games with 4 IP starts from your starter without those being shutdown innings.

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. But by then, also, the first acid distractions entered: the TV flickered; the cracks in the wall started to move; the hand soap started to breathe — those sorts of things. Plus I was drawn to the outdoor garden between innings. Rain was near, I sensed." - A.J. Daulerio

by Gdawg on Aug 3, 2011 11:41 AM CDT up reply actions

My answer:

I’m kinda leaning towards the 4+4. At least if you don’t have a spare starter — i.e., if the guy got injured after 8 innings in the first start, you can pull up a spot starter, but if he got injured in the first before getting any outs you’d be relying on your BP for 9 innings, which seems like worse abuse.

by Closure GT on Aug 3, 2011 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I think it depends on your teams offense

The 8/0 probably has a much more imbalanced runs scored – probably most of the runs were in the 0IP game. So you probably will win one game and lose the other regardless of the bullpen.

For the 4/4, with that FIP, if your team has a strong offense, like the Rangers, and a decent bullpen, then you have a good chance of winning both games. Or, I’d say, you’d probably have a ~55% chance of winning either game individually, which would be better than the expected win value of the 8+0.

So for the Rangers, 4+4. For your average NL team or AL West team? Give me the 8+0

Fun with Napoli and Vernon Wells.

Currently they are sporting:

Napoli: 235 PA | .294 | .391 | .607 | .998
Wells: 338 PA | .216 | .251 | .398 | .649

There is a 103 PA difference… if Napoli went 0 for 103 he would be…

Napoli: 338 PA | .194 | .272 | .401 | .674

He’d still have a higher OBP, SLG and obviously OPS than Wells.

0 for 103.

And Wells will get paid $80+m for his time in LAA. I’m not sure trading Napoli AND Juan Rivera is exactly “freeing up” the Angels ability to pay cheaper players in Trumbo and Conger since they took on Wells massive contract.
