NEW YORK - OCTOBER 20: Matt Treanor #15 of the Texas Rangers hits a RBI ground out in the top of the sixth inning against the New York Yankees in Game Five of the ALCS during the 2010 MLB Playoffs at Yankee Stadium on October 20 2010 in the Bronx borough of New York City. One of my pet theories this year, after the Rangers sent Matt Treanor to the Royals, was that there was a good chance that Treanor could end up back with Texas before season's end.
Evan Grant thinks that a deal between Texas and Kansas City could be brewing, with the Rangers looking to bring Treanor back to Texas as a third catcher for the month of September and, potentially, the playoffs.
Treanor has been okay this season, not hitting for average, but drawing walks and holding his own behind the plate:
Treanor would allow the Rangers to use Yorvit Torrealba behind the plate and Mike Napoli at first base or DH, while giving someone Ron Washington has more confidence in that Taylor Teagarden available on the bench.
The deadline is today, so it is worth keeping an eye on.
Grant also notes that, while Aaron Rowand and Miguel Tejada have been designated for assignment by the Giants, the Rangers are not interested in acquiring either player.
Before we start clamoring for Rowand to replace Gentry, keep in mind:
UPDATE -- Jeff Wilson says a deal for Treanor is close.
