It was an epic fail of epic proportions

"In fact, most of these free-swinging Padres couldn’t hit Dock’s funky palm ball. I threw it often. But by then, also, the first acid distractions entered: the TV flickered; the cracks in the wall started to move; the hand soap started to breathe — those sorts of things. Plus I was drawn to the outdoor garden between innings. Rain was near, I sensed." - A.J. Daulerio

Does the president actually get days off?

its not like he can wake up one day and say, I’m calling in today, Hey Joe, for today, You’re president.

Hell, he even works in the same building as his office. I wonder if he sometimes goes to work in his pajamas. I know if I were president I’d do that sometimes. and then dare anyone to say anything.

Too many things are floating around

for something to be said on this topic regarding Ackley.

Did he hit as many line drives in the minors as he has so far?

You could theoretically jump to conclusions by looking at his reduced BB% and thinking, “maybe he’s changed his approach now that he’s in the bigs, in being more aggressive in terms of swinging at hittable pitches”.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Aug 5, 2011 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, so that's why I'm regressing him downwards...

If he keeps those batted ball rates up, his BABIP isn’t going to regress all that much (and .339 really isn’t monstrously high).

Even if he regresses to say, a .360 wOBA with slightly above-average defense, in that ballpark, he’s very similar to Kinsler as a player…except a lot younger.

a .360 wOBA = one of the top offensive 2b since 1950

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.

I dunno what his wOBA would be

if you regress his BABIP .20 or .30 points down and his ISO down .50 points.

And in that case, may as well push his BB% up because he’s “only” walking 9.4% of the time so far.

big if

again, i dont think he is a bad player but there is simply zero chance he is a 160 wRC+ guy

kinsler is a 117 wRC+ guy (career)
utley is a 134 wRC+ guy (career)

since 01, among guys with 3000+ PAs, there are exactly six guys with wRC+ of over 115

i just dont think he is going to hit for enough power, in that park, to be about a 120 wRC+ guy

I'm not guaranteeing it,

but he’s been so good in non-complete luck ways, that he can regress and still be the best 2B in the division.

i think he is good, i do NOT think he is that good.

While regression is necessary, you’re not having to strongly regress to the mean for a crazy BABIP; moreover, it’s not like he wasn’t a well thought of prospect.

Here ya go, TCU folk.
Fifth-round rookie Jeremy Kerley is taking first- and second-team reps at Jets camp, and Mark Sanchez described him as a “baller.” Kerley has also drawn rave reviews from beat writers watching practice. “He’s just a baller,” Sanchez said. “He’s doing great. For a guy who didn’t know much of the playbook coming in, he’s picked it up really fast.”

and he ran a 4.59 40 at the combine. He was one of the slower WR on the team, in terms of straight line speed.

He was just agile as fuck, shifty, and made every catch thrown his way. Loved watching him play.

rice was significantly better than kerley in other areas

Good lord, I made it all caps for a reason

Do I think Kerley=Rice, hell no. But since the greatest receiver in NFL history wasn’t that fast, I think he’s at least an example that speed isn’t everything. If Kerley can catch what’s thrown to him and find open space, he can definitely play in the NFL.

And I’d say Crayton was better than replacement (using a special teams WR type of replacement player) but he was very average. There’s still some value in that, though.

because its not like Napoli is constantly injured. Its like in Basketball, they have “DNP – Coaches decision”. Basically, when Napoli doesn’t play its not his fault. He plays when his name is in the lineup.

If we’d have traded Young, Napoli would have more plate appearences. Its not like he’s not hitting righ handers.

In that case

spending 34 million, with 28 million/year of it committed long-term to two aging players facing decline with both bat and glove, to first basemen, catcher and DH would make managing the rest of the roster a lot more difficult in the future.

And you still ended up spinning things. Yorvit was signed for 3.125 mil, Webb for 3 mil and Rhodes for 1.4 mil with incentives (which would have topped out at probably 4 mil, but he wasn’t). That’s not even 11 million. Congratulations on your mathematics acumen.

Many teams with mid-to-upper tier payroll

like the Rangers end up spending some of their money on lemons instead of oranges, every offseason. It could happen not just in free agency, but in arbitration raises. That sucks, but the idea of having two players who exclusively play 1B/DH and some bad catching, being paid a combined 28 million over the next few years, with some of the team’s best talent hitting FA, is not palatable at all, compared to committing 28 million to short-term options and having about eight million from that disappear.

AJM was pretty down on him, but I think more worried about what we'd get in the last two years of a four-year deal.

Plenty of folks now talk about how obvious it was that he’d fall of a cliff (old man skills, etc.), but I’m certain that if everyone had been forced to put money on an O/U HR total of 37.5, the overwhelming majority would have taken the Over and laughed about it.

Most would

because its a fall off the cliff kind of thing. When the bat speed slows down a bit for a guy like Dunn, its a huge collapse like the one he has now. No one would have put money on it happening this year, but its why most didn’t want to do any kind of long-term deal for him (and why most GMs didn’t want to either).

I don’t think you can characterize any player as being one that doesn’t want to play for a winner. No one likes losing and since he signed with Chicago this offseason, I don’t think he went there thinking they were just going to lose for 4 years.

There was a decent amount of talk about him here

But the big downsides were 1) price; 2) the role he would fill in the field (horrible) or DH. For me it came down to too much money for someone that could only DH.

That’s probably the one I hate the most. At least the local blackouts makes sense – trying to get people to the ballpark versus staying at home. Granted, it’s 1950s logic but at least there’s some logic. The Fox thing is enraging here MLB tells you you’ll watch whatever Fox wants you to watch.

Okay, I might be a little optimistic with that.

But I’m drinking this “Ceej has a good conditioning routine and work habits” thing, so I don’t think it’s too crazy to say, he could produce one >4 WAR season, a couple of 3.5-4 WAR seasons, and then a couple of 2.5-3.5 WAR seasons. That totals up to something near 20, which is fine given presumed inflation in the market.

But we're not talking about CJ's upside.

It seems that a part of your argument in favour of Darvish is because of his upside, which might be huge compared to CJ’s zero upside.

but I watched an infomercial the other night that was trying to sell me prayers and holy water. All you have to do is pay them money, then they’ll pray for you and ship you some holy water. They even showed a man miraculously stand from a wheelchair after getting doused with the holy water. They also claimed god would fix your debt through “divine transfer.” Someone said $6000 was magically deposited in their bank account the day after they called.

Paying money for miracles from god. Sounds legit.

The Black Keys?

I’d recommend the following album progression: Rubber Factory, Brothers, Attack and release, Thick Freakness.

From there you can dig into more obscure stuff. Personally, I think the Chulahoma EP might be their best work, but it’s not a great representative sample of the rest of their catalog.

So I had a fantasy football draft last night...and it sucked. I had the 11th pick.

Here is who I got. QB-Josh Freeman, Matt Cassell RB-Ray Rice Michael Turner Jahvid Best, CJ Spiller, WR Mike Williams, Kenny Britt, Mario Manningham, Julio Jones, Jacoby Jons, Jacoby Ford, K- Alex Henery, Def-Chiefs

What should I have done differently?

The way I see it

in your first two picks you should go one RB, one WR, instead of drafting two RB1s, because there always seem to be at least a few RB2s or backup running backs who take a jump, whereas there are fewer WRs later on who step up.

IMO, you're probably going to have to hope

that Rice and Turner stick around and carry you most weeks…though of course, they’re both pretty damn good. I don’t really like the WR core (Williams not quite proven in my eyes, Britt super headcase, Manningham inconsistent, Julio a rookie…), and I don’t trust Best or Spiller.

Yeah it was a serpentine style draft

And our stupid league didn’t realy have an organzied draft. We would draft a player and cross his name of the list and then write him down on a piece of paper who they then gave to the commissioner to put into the computer.

I guess if you're just sitting out there like a lizard

and drinking water, you won’t get heat stroke.

However, assuming you’re even walking around, you’re going to need to be drinking a lot of cold water and finding shade to avoid heat exhaustion if you’re going to be outside more than a couple of hours.

Oh man,

I heard about this crazy stuff they’re developing in Germany. It’s a material that turns into solid at room temperature, but liquid at really high temperatures. So during the night, it solidifies, then during the day, it’s able to absorb heat energy as it converts to a liquid. You would put it in the outer walls of your home.

I'm not sure about that.

France is making quite a big push on it. It’s kind of interesting because the French love science and technology, but are often very traditional when it comes to thing like home design and such. I imagine there are quite a few who don’t like putting solar panels all over the roofs, but I definitely saw more of it out there than I do in Texas…which is strange to me.

I guess they have more subsidies for it…

Not in these temperatures with current technology,

but improvements are obviously coming. The interesting thing I’ve been following lately is the organic (polymer) vs more standard solar panels that use rare earth elements that are mainly mined in China (and China is starting to be bitches about). Efficiencies for organic are only half what they are for traditional solar panels right now, but if they can get that tech up to speed, you should see cost significantly reduced.

Still, I’m not convinced they’ll ever be able to rid themselves of the extreme bureaucracy.

Having just as much bureaucracy

as in China here. In a lot/most places in China, it’s the equivalent of the Dept Chair who gets the funding, then he doles it out as he sees fit…which generally involves lots of backscratching and sucking up. There system doesn’t encourage enough new, challenging ideas.

and our current grant system does?

Every year NIH stays the same for a rapidly expanding number of aspiring independent scientists (PhD’s graduating per year >>> $$ available for them to do work).

Yes, the money nominally flows from NIH —> PI. But which PIs? The “proven veterans” of the field and their chosen favorite progeny. There is no free market of ideas in science right now, at least not at NIH. You write grants on what will get funded. What gets funded is the “what” and the “who” the power brokers like…

it was always the week before football started, and I would think “well, I better put the pop-tarts away and do some lifting and running”, but it was too late by then.

But then you remember the friday night lights… it sure was a lot of fun then.

Dark Luck Dragon of the Sith

by Darth Snark on Aug 5, 2011 3:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Well... I tried to get you to participate

And you sort of flippantly said, “Just use Marcel for mine.”

I don’t think you were serious, but I had intended on including Marcel anyway for a frame of reference.

It’s RMSE of the guessed stats, PA / BA / OBP / SLG and IP / ERA / K/9 / BB/9 / HR/9.

For the leader board I just changed to a scale of 0 to 100 per player… best gets a 100, worst gets a 0… everyone else gets a score depending on how close they were to the best or worst.

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

So this isn't scaled to how close each person's prediction actually was to the performance,

but rather ranked absolutely (in increments of 1) based on that closeness?

So if the top two folks were almost exactly on the actual performance, but the third person was way away (and everyone else after even farther), it’s still only a one-point difference?

And what are the percentages?

Dark Luck Dragon of the Sith

by Darth Snark on Aug 5, 2011 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Sort of.

Let’s say the best score was 2%, worst score 52%. The person that was 2% gets 100 points… if the second best guess was 6%, they would get 92 points. If the third best guess was also 6% they would also get 92 points. If the fourth best guess was 35%, they would get 44 points.

The percentage is relative to how many players you made a guess on. The totals in red did not guess for every player. Green had full participation.

I had it purely based on averaging each player, but Tommy Hunter and Julio Borbon were so far off they skewed the percentages… basically, if you were the best guess at Borbon you won.

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions

*Percentage is the percentage of total points possible.

If you guessed all 15 players, 1500 is the max score.

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Incidentally...

The average points awarded per player is 63. Those bad guesses are really bad.

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Why 92 points for 6 percent, and 44 points for 35 percent?

I’m sure it’s something simple, but my brain’s in neutral right now.

Dark Luck Dragon of the Sith

by Darth Snark on Aug 5, 2011 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Just the weighted difference.

If the range is 2 to 52, each percentage point is worth 2 points.

So 2 = 100 pts, 6 = 92 pts, 35 = 44 pts, 52 = 0 pts

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

The actual formula I used is:

((Score – Min) / (Max- Min)) * 100

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm glad it's Friday, because it's been the day from hell

Late yesterday, the hard drive on my computer just completely crapped out. I got the blue screen of death and then it just shut down. The IT folks spent almost an hour working on it yesterday and three hours today and finally just had to give me a new hard drive. But … they didn’t move anything saved on my old hard drive to my new one. I lost 6 mos. of writing projects. Or at least I thought I did. I spent the last hour down there getting it all moved over. Thank goodness. And now I have three hours to try and be productive. Oh, and I’m trying to squeeze in lunch now too. Ugh. I wasn’t going to have any alcohol this weekend, but I might need a beer tonight.

If you don't have a back up of data then it might as well not exist.

It is not a question of if a hard drive will fail, it is a question of when.

Is your computer on a company network? At my organization we let our users know that anything on your C: drive is not backed up and no valuable data should be kept on it.

Each user has an H: drive on the network that is backed up nightly (in addition to being on redundant server hardware).

Curious..

If your hard drive crapped out, why would you think they could move anything from it to the new drive??

OK, I'm not really sure it was the hard drive that crapped out

But something happened to the point where they just had to give me a new hard drive. They still had my old one and were able to rescue things from it.

Data can often be retrieved from a malfunctioning hard drive.

Let’s say it’s just one sector that has gone out, but that sector has Windows DLLs and components that the O/S needs to function.

You can’t boot or run off of a drive like that… but you could still pull data.

by Brad on Aug 5, 2011 1:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I am aware...

I was assuming her statements about her drive crapping out, BSOD, and replacing the drive meant it was toast.

But she could experience a failing hard drive and a BSOD

Under the conditions I described and still be able to retrieve data. It’s fairly rare for a hard drive to be completely rendered useless.

Why??

In 20+ years of seeing drives “crap out”, I’ve never expected to get my files back if I hand the drive over to someone else. I’ve seldom had a desktop support person even offer to try.

Never.

I have, however, repaired many a drive myself and recovered data. Well, up until WD started making their drives so tightly tuned that you can’t easily swap boards when those fry.

But hey, wouldn’t be the first odd question I’ve ever asked. No worries.

by bking on Aug 5, 2011 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it's unusual for a customer to request if the files can be retrieved.

And there’s a very reasonable expectation that they can be.

Your 20+ has made you aware of the possibility of it happening. My experience has had more workstation hard drives be recoverable than not. As I said… it’s relatively rare that a hard drive is rendered completely useless.

Your question is in the mode of “What kind of idiot would expect to be able to get data off of a broken hard drive?”, but I think it’s a very reasonable question that BBIMBF asked.

And… she was right… she got her data back.

Dear Zane from Chipotle,

I’d appreciate you not calling me and leaving me a message to see how my order went when I’m waiting on a call about a job. It gets my career pants all excited.

It’s become much easier to name great players who have never won an NBA title (Barkley, Karl Malone, Pat Ewing, Dominique Wilkins, George Gervin, LeBron James) than it is to name great NBA players who have won exactly one (Jerry West, Julius Erving, Nate Archibald), simply because the former list is mentioned so much more often.
