Discuss with Josey the Angels, Mike Napoli, Vernon Wells, etc.

Too many threads of late are devolving into arguments with Josey, as he continues to hard-headedly insist that the Angels had a great offseason, made a brilliant move in acquiring Vernon Wells for Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera, and generally praising the work of the Angels front office.

So, here's the new rule:  Josey cannot discuss the Angels in any FanPost, front page post, or other thread but this one.

Other people cannot ask Josey about the Angels or bait him about their offseason in any post but this one.

The discussion of the Angels' 2010-11 offseason, their 2011-12 offseason, their improvement this year, the Haren trade...

All that needs to be confined to this thread.

Misplaced Angst

Does anyone seriously think Napoli would have hit .300 in LA?

Does anyone seriously thing Wells would have had to fight the Mendoza line in Toronto? How would he have fared in the culture of hitting in Texas? He actually was a GREAT acquisition by the Angels. They just didn’t provide the environment that would have been conducive for him to succeed.

Same with Torii Hunter. Down year.

Tony Reagins made masterful acquisitions over the past few years. But, the environment in which he placed those players didn’t lead to excellence at the plate. He shouldn’t have left – Hatcher is the one who should have left.

As soon as the Rangers realized their hitting coach was suppressing their hitting excellence, they let him go – no matter he was a bud of the manager – and brought in someone who promoted their kind of hitting culture.

Scioscia isn’t so much worried about his hitting. He was a catcher. He’s all about pitching. Hitting doesn’t win championships. What he doesn’t realize, lack of hitting will lose them.

Scioscia is a great manager. He’s proven that. But, he needs someone with the authority to tell him to fire his cronies who are holding the team back. We have that in Texas. They don’t in LA.

I don't know that there's much of an argument...they not only had a better record this year but they also signed Jeff Weaver

to a long term deal a year before he hit free agency.

Mano a mano the trade of V Wells for Napoli & Rivera wasn’t good because Wells STBF but on the other hand, it hasn’t crippled the franchise or made them a worse team.

Just because of Trout? I guess one of Hunter or Wells could DH

Very interesting off-season.

I don’t know if Moreno is mad at Sosh & TR / about to fire somebody to appease an obviously pissed off fan base (team was better but attendance was off by a thousand or so).

I’d expect Trout & Bourjos to play with Hunter in the OF…maybe Wells / Hunter split DH/OF duty. If that happens, what if Morales comes back healthy? What about Trumbo?

Do they trade one of their front line starters for something good and make a huge run at CJ?

They have a lot on their off-season plate.

Bourjos + a minor league pitcher

For David Wright
I don’t think it’s a great longterm deal for the Halos, but they have Trout to play in CF, and they are stuck with Wells, Hunter and Abreu next season.

Wright gives them the RH’ed thunder they were looking for when they decided Adrian wasn’t worth the extra $3M, and it’d be a 2-year contract, which has to be seen as more favorable than committing more years to A. Ramirez

The would have come off the books completely

But now with Wells salary entrenched for years to come and weavers salary increasing, plus harens salary increasing, as well as all their other arb guys it completely eats up that money.

Plus, now we get to see how long Arte will be willing to fork over 130+ million dollars a year for non-playoff teams. Everyone labeled him a great owner willing to spend when the Angels were going to the playoffs every year but now that its been 2 straight years you have to wonder how long he will keep up this level of payroll.

Having the Wells contract on their books as opposed to not is going to significantly affect their player movements. To argue otherwise is stupid

Also...

If the Rangers made the Wells trade and finished in second place, you would not accept “the record is better”. You would talk about the missed opportunity to win This Thing because of the anchor dead weight of Wells .250 OBP and that Napoli was killing it for our rival.

You would think “the record is better” was bullshit. Just like you’re saying that Rangers fans shouldn’t accept just going to the playoffs. You’d see the missed opportunity more than you would an unrelated improvement in record to win 86 games and be mediocre.

except all of 2 of those players are actually rather good players/prospects

trout and walden.

chatwood is a back of the rotation guy at best…4.69 k/9, 4.50 bb/9. give me a break.

conger is an all bat guy who had a 73 wRC+ this year

burjos is a legit very, very good defensive CF but is not a 112 wRC+ guy (22%K vs 5%BB, had a 100 point jump in BABIP) — is he a solid player — he should be in the rather good bucket if he is actually a 100 wRC+ guy…but i am not sure if he is…

trumbo had a 106 wRC+ season this year. 4.4 bb%, ~21% k%. if he is a 100 wRC+ guy ( +/- 10 points) i am really happy. because that is not very good in the AL for a 1B man, much less one on a team that has very deep pockets.

Rangers fans had an elite farm system with plenty of <30 year old guys throughout the roster

to look to carry the team in the following year. They also had one of the lower payrolls in the league with only one big contract. The Angels have multiple big contracts, no farm system, and outside of a couple of guys, all of their players or 30 or older.

He actually turned it into a strength, when most GMs would do just enough to make sure it wasn’t a weakness. And that’s not even addressing the GMs that stand pat (angels).

No, I didn't think they'd win the AL West

back in March.

Bullpen was in shambles and they were very dependent on starters (Harry, Holland, Ogando) without a sustained track record of success.

I said if they went at least 14-12 on The Death March they’d win the AL West (they went 15-11). It was some time during the Death March (probably the late August series v the Angels) that I signed off on them winning it.

Nope...

Ranger fans probably accepted 09 because of our previous playoff failures and low expectations. Talk to any Angel fan and see if they’re content with their performance this year.

Plus if, like you said, they were making a commitment to young players, they wouldn’t have blown their wad on Vernon Wells. They would have brought Trout up earlier.

They have a couple of young talented players for the future, but Weaver, Santana, Haren, and Kendrick aren’t going to be young forever. Their farm system is pretty weak and they have a lot of money tied up in Wells over the next few years.

Nothing like

being on the fence about something. You wait all season to finally say that it was not a good move, after you watch his joke of a season and then form your opinion. You cite how the team was not good with Haren half the year last year, so those few more wins this year could not have been due to the fact he was there a full year. You’re just a pussy that did not want to make a decision earlier in the year. You wanted so badly for this trade to work out for the Angels so you could do nothing but trash JD, so you stuck to your ridiculous reasoning. Now the season is over and they finished 10 games back, the race was over in September, the media just wanted you to believe otherwise.

by Scott5 on Oct 3, 2011 10:18 AM CDT up reply actions

That trade didn't work out but the Angels cleared the way to give lots of

playing time to young kids plus their FO also got rid of dysfunction within The Room.

They thought 85-90 wins would put them in a pennant race and give them a chance at the AL West. They were right.

As another nugget...

You were “on the fence” on the trade for Wells by the Angels… you wanted to see how it would play out.

Yet you immediately bashed the trade of Frankie for Napoli as “One trade too many”. Stating that it put the bullpen in shambles for a part time player. No fence sitting there…

Of course now you’ve come around on Napoli… hindsight is great.

Funny how a HOF player hit .248 in his year 31 year and has seen his OPS lower for a 4th straight season. But I’m sure he’ll age gracefully, and manage to average over 30 HRs over the next 5 or 6 years to get to 500 HRs.

I highly doubt you would take solace that their record was better. This is a team that owned this division before last year, has a World Series ring, money to spend in the offseason, and expectations just as high as Texas. Go on HH and see if their fans are satisfied with this season after losing Napoli to us, being outbid on Beltre by us, and not improving their team at the trade deadline.

You're not having a good discussion

You’re getting anally abused by every single person who knows a thing about baseball and chooses to engage in a discussion with you. The funny thing to me is that I truly believe that you’re sitting there thinking that you’re winning. I have just recently accepted that people like this really do exist.

Did the Angels win more games in 2010 than 2011? Yes.

Were they still contending for the AL West thru mid September? 3.5 games out on September 15…the answer would appear to be yes.

Did the V Wells Contract keep them from signing Weaver? No, they signed their Boras-repped ace more than a year before he hit free agency.

I sure hope we sign CJ.

Replying to a question with a stupid question

Rather than an answer is being a pussy and trying to claw your way out of a mess. Be a man and admit you were 100% wrong about that deal, 100% wrong about JD, and 100% wrong about nearly everything that comes out of your mouth.

Who cares if they were contending, they had one of the best 1-3 starters in the majors and were nearly gifted the wildcard. The problem with you is it’s so obviously that you argue just to argue b/c you argue both sides of the same crap. When it comes ot the Danks/McCarthy deal and many other trades, you say that you don’t care about the logic, you only care about the results. Yet when it comes to this trade, you try to defend it by saying that it didn’t cripple the team, they were better this year, and if Wells didn’t STBF it would’ve been a great move.

All you have to do is read HH for 5 min, read any national writer who knows a thing about baseball, or listen to the 500 people in here that have shown their vastly superior intellect relative to yourself and you would realize just how insanely idiotic you sound. The best thing that you could do is admit that you’re completely wrong, that this whole thing has just been a trolling bit that you thought would be fun, and apologize for being such an ass clown for the past several years and change. B/c ultimately I do think that you are capable of bringing a lot to the table, but like Tom Grieve you’re kind of a waste or years of experience b/c you bring mostly nothing.

The scouting report on Salty is that he’s a pampered, curly-haired motherfuck who didn’t earn his stripes. He has trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher, claims to be a switch-hitter and is piss-poor in the clutch.

Why would I admit I was wrong when the Angels had a better record in 2011 than in 2010?

If the V Wells Contract was supposed to hamstring the team going forward, how could they sign Weaver?

I’ll admit when I’m wrong but this is a time when I was clearly right.

I said last year that I respected the track records of Sosh & TR and that I’m going to wait until the season is over to render judgment on their work in the off-season.

Yeah, the Wells Trade was a disaster but their team is better this year than it was last year and that contract didn’t keep the Angels from signing Weaver.

TR was GM of team that won 100, 97, 80 and 86 games.

He let Vladdy, Figgins and Lackey walk…all good decisions.

Traded OCabrera for John Garland.

Signed DOliver as free agent.

Traded for Tex (who was a 2 month monster) at the deadline.

Signed Bobby Abreu on the cheap in 2009 and won the AL West because of it.

Also traded for Haren.

Get this…signed Jered Weaver, represented by Scott Boras, to a club-friendly extension more than a year before he hit free agency.

His track record suggests he was a good GM and as a Rangers fan, I’m glad he’s gone.

A lot of this doesn’t make sense….why would Sosh send Napoli away for a player with THAT contract when he needed offense and why would Napoli’s value be somebody like Frankie?

I figured out the Sosh/Napoli conundrum yesterday

Ever notice who kicked Sosh’s catching career to the curb at the young age of 33?
Granted, Sosh’s age 33 season wasn’t great, but how could a guy with his kind of baseball IQ not be a back up somewhere

Sosh watched a young player with no ability to catch but a lot of ability to hit HRs take his job, and it’s now rooted in his mind that big sluggers have no future as catchers. End of story.

And I’ll admit, trollilng Halo’s Heaven gave me the idea
But I think that Sosh’s experience basically getting kicked out of his job for a guy who get HRs at a prodigious rate but who could do next to nothing else required of a catcher was part of the problem in his relationship with Napoli

He sees guys who hit HRs as something other than catchers – period

Arte said it was the length of the contract

Thats why he liked the Wells deal. One less year!!! (maybe two)

But they offered $77M over 5

And we offered $80 over 5, with a conditional 6th based on plate appearances and him continuing to be a valuable contributor

From all the reports out of Gammons and such, doesn’t it seem pretty likely that if the Angels had matched the 5-year offer, they’d have gotten him?

by CO Ranger on Sep 29, 2011 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

I think he wanted that sixth year even if it was conditional

Do you think if the only difference was 3 million that he would have turned the angels down?

going off other reports

The Angels made their classic, take-it-or-leave-it offer, and allowed the Rangers to come over the top with a few extra dollars and a conditional extra year.

So maybe it wasn’t just the $3M, but they handled it less-than-effectively and didn’t get it done, and the money wasn’t much diff’t …

Has anyone thrown the theory out there that Josey may very well indeed be RevHaloFan in disguise?

Just a thought.

nah

Josey likes the Dodgers. Rev would never say that. Even as a sock puppet. Josey has opinions. He also loves to push peoples buttons with them

He didn't put a bunch of effort into building it. It kind've just fell in his lap.

We all know why Josey is still allowed to start all the trouble and basically say whatever he wants without punishment.. I let that cat out of the bag some time back.

But we aren’t allowed to talk about it.. so watch what you hint at!

Jerome "undead" Williams

Jerome Williams was dead in baseball, and the Angles dug him up, what do you think of his future? Where will the Angels dig this year?

Wrong thread?

I’m confused. Who cares about Jerome Williams and his mediocrity. Do you really want Josey’s opinion on him? Who cares.

The scouting report on Salty is that he’s a pampered, curly-haired motherfuck who didn’t earn his stripes. He has trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher, claims to be a switch-hitter and is piss-poor in the clutch.

Have fun!

Isn't it sad that we have to do this?

I mean, this is an extremely intelligent forum full of well-rounded, interesting, and thoughtful people…

… and one guy we have to make a special thread for.

Ive become impressed with LSB

I thoroughly expected a very messy discussion about the angels, with trash talking abound. The last few times ive come here though its been nice. I appreciate our rivalry and hope to establish mutual respect between our teams. I certainly dont wish for a Red Sox Yankees rivalry in the AL West. Im rooting for you guys to smash the tigers, good luck tonight.

And Josey, youre an idiot.
1. We signed Jered Weaver, not Jeff Weaver.
2. Vernon Wells was the worst trade ever committed by the Angels. EVER. Not only does he severely inhibit our ability to land a marque FA for the next 4 years, he blocks baseballs number 1 prospect from blossoming in the league. He is terrible with the bat and glove. Were it not for VW, it wouldnt be inconceivable for the Angels to sign two big names this off season.. Were that to be Reyes, Fielder, Pujols, Wilson(sorry, I really like him. I want him most of all. If we fail to sign him, which we will, I hope he stays in Texas. I dont know your consensus on CC but I hope you sign him. Lets power down the Yankees.) any of those would put us in great shape. Thanks to VW, One of those names might be difficult to get.
3. TR is the worst GM out there. The only trade he really scored on was the Tex deal back in 08. The Haren deal is good as of now, but could turn out to be a loss if Skaggs and Corbin turn out to be as projected. This is especially true if we cant utilize Haren n the Playoffs. Every other trade seems to have a net loss or no gain. Bad GM.
4. As much as the VW trade hurt, trading Napoli hurt more. He is an excellent catcher and might have put us in the Postseason if he were still an angel.
