Rangers lineup for Game 1 of the ALDS
The Rangers lineup for Game 1 of the ALDS has been posted. It is:
Ian Kinsler -- 2B
Elvis Andrus -- SS
Josh Hamilton -- CF
Michael Young -- 1B
Adrian Beltre -- 3B
Mike Napoli -- C
Nelson Cruz -- RF
Yorvit Torrealba -- DH
Craig Gentry -- LF
C.J. Wilson is pitching.
The one thing I'm sort of mystified about is Gentry in left field. He's been acknowledged as the team's best defensive outfielder, so I don't get why he's in left field instead of centerfield.

I guess I should just be happy he has Gentry in there against a lefty instead of Murphy.

I know he had an arm, but I didn't think it was possibly stronger than Josh's
good to know, if true.
I don't know if it's stronger, but I've seen some straight bullets come off his arm
and he’s been pretty damn accurate on them too.
Maybe I haven't paid close enought attention
…..the only Gentry throw that sticks out to me was a dud he let loose while playing in RF the other day.
I didn’t think his arm was anything better than average…

Do you think Hamilton will hit better enough because of playing CF
to offset the defensive difference between him and Gentry in CF.
The answer is Murphy

Gentry could be this year’s Moreland though….I’m just not banking on it.

I guess Wash means moving him back and forth when Murphy comes in, but if I were Hamilton, I’d go to Wash and let him know Gentry is the man for the job.
I would love to see Josh's splits

For purposes of who is where in the lineup...
… who is the best defensive 1B of the three that can play the position? Young, Napoli, or Moreland?
Due to his bat issues, I definitely don’t want Moreland starting. Is this an issue of putting the best player on the 1B bag by putting Young there?
Go Rangers!
I really couldn't tell a difference between Young and Napoli at 1B.
I think they both have better hands than Moreland.

I don't think you're right about the hands at all
and I think Moreland has more range than the both of them. Less important with all of our lefty starters but still important nonetheless
Young's defensive issues have to do with range...not his hands or the strength of his arm.

I agree Young's hands are not bad
but Moreland has great hands. I haven’t seen any issues with his hands or his scooping or anything like that. I think Moreland has better technique at first (stretching, giving fielders a target) and it helps that he’s taller.
One thing that gets me is that MY never seems to stretch for a ball w/ his foot on the bag at first.
I’m always scared him basically standing on the bag is gonna cost us an out.
Interesting - there should not be a difference between hit balls and thrown balls
But, I have watched a couple of hit balls go through Moreland that Young would have had. On the other HAND, Young does not seem to have as good of a skill at picking bad throws.
"Yata He"
Moreland
also has a stronger arm than Young

i think he will leave Josh in center no matter who the 3rd OF is
because a few weeks ago in an interview Josh discussed that he prepares for CF differently than LF, so Wash prob doesn’t want to disrupt his routine….

Wash did this last year with Borbon
in Game 2 of the ALDS. But I thought that was because of arm issues, and Gentry has a fairly strong arm. So yeah….
If Gentry in LF is the most boneheaded thing Wash can do with the lineup today, I would say JD
has built as close to a fool-proof team as one can be.
Rock the J2, JD!
Yeah
Do we consider Josh much of a downgrade in CF? I realize he doesn’t have the wheels Gentry does, but Josh covers CF well from what I can tell.

"...out of the shadows of unprecedented success, the sun shines down upon this team waiting to thrill anew." - ghostofErikThompson
yeah
though I would prefer Gentry in CF, it’s not like I consider Hamilton a liabilty out there, by any means
The issue is that
Gentry’s value is his defensive range in CF. His bat is so underwhelming…..I’m not sure he’s that he’s an upgrade over Murphy in LF(despite a lefty being on the mound). I fear Moore will make Gentry look pretty silly today at the plate.
I would rather have Gentry on the bench to pinch-run.

Gentry will double off him twice.
I have nothing to base this on except an irrational fondness for Gentry, but I’m sticking with it.
Gentry > Murphy
with lefty on the mound. Thats not even a question in my mind. Murphy has been AWFUL this year against lefties and not good at all against them throughout his career. If the choice was Gentry in left or Murphy in left today then Wash made the right choice.

The part I don't get
is why weren’t we getting Gentry more experience in LF towards the end of the season, if Wash saw this coming?
313 innings in center, and 9 in LF. I’m sure he can handle it, but familiarity wouldn’t hurt.
The Rays were expecting high-and-tight
but Wash snapped a curveball off… The Rays are reeling right now.

1) Sees that we face Tampa Bay. Surprised.
2) Sees that Tampa Bay has a trick up their sleeve – Matt Moore in game 1.
3) Sees the need to counter with something unexpected as well.

I am disappointed at how many tickets are available for the taking.
Sure, I like that everyone gets to go, but I fear the regular (i.e. non-LSB) Ranger fan is sleeping on this game/series because it isn’t like last year. I am absolutely pumped and I want 50k people there.
Ranger fans, just wanted to extend a sincere and hearty good luck during this ALDS
Last year turned into a really solid series after you guys whipped us good the first couple. Your team is getting no respect at the national level, but they can play with anybody and beat em too. Pitching, defense, baserunning, bullpen, and HITTING is there a weak link? Anyway, I encourage you to come over to Draysbay if we can all be adults and get ready to strap it on for what should be another very exciting season in what has turned out to be one of the best of my life already.

My mom's from there and my dad's parents moved there before I was born, so I've spent a decent amount of time there. It was unimpressive.
I’ve talked a lot here about there being many places I’d like to move away from Texas for, but there’s also a much bigger list of places that I wouldn’t move to.
I grew up in upstate NY and moved down there for about a decade in which I became a pretty huge Rays fan
Living back in NY again and love it. Florida is a really strange place to live, not like most others. Maybe it’s the population density or the sunshine, but I much prefer open spaces.

I know, it's the most frustrating thing in the world that they're not only competitive

High risk… potential high reward. We’d want our manager to do the same thing with the same decision.
But the Texas lineup is amazing… so… I like our chances vs any pitcher.

Well said, I think part of the hopes is that with Shields going tomorrow we can hopefully weather a bullpen blowup today, but
I don’t like the idea of Shields pitching at BiA with his homer ways from time to time. I’m glad we could avoid it last year, but not so lucky this year. And if Price is just going to throw 95 straight fastballs it’s not like he’d be any better.

His worst inning was coming back out in a relief appearance, but considering he's dominated each level of the minors while actually showing improvement upon each call up
then I don’t have very much fear. He’s another emotionless guy like Hellickson or Davis that isn’t really fazed by the stage. If he gets hit it’s because he’s facing a very good lineup not because he isn’t ready or jittery or whatever sports writers like to talk about

And I know people get caught up in prospect bluster all the time, but I've seen him live and watched every inning in the majors and this kid
is legit. My biggest concern is that he gets fastball heavy and you guys smoke that shit every single day. He hasn’t flexed the change up as much as I’d like and he seems to regard it as his 3rd pitch, but it’s quite good showing around 10 MPH separation and nice fade.

O/U on the number of times the following two names will be mentioned today:
Bob Wolcott: 11.5 (about 10 in the pregame, and maybe once during the game)
Joe Black: 1.5 (one mention during the pre-game.
BTW, a picture of Joe Black, which in reference to his name reminds us all of what the good-old-days was like:

Rock the J2, JD!
ok, that makes sense
I’d still say Cliff Lee gets mentioned more than either of them
Prior to Matt Moore making a start, they had the fewest starts of any SP in the playoffs.
Joe Black had 2 starts prior to being the Game 1 pitcher for the 1952 World Series.
Bob Wolcott had 6 starts prior to being the Game 1 pitcher of the 1995 ALCS.
Both won their first playoff games, which could be an interesting storyline point if Matt Moore has a quick 1st inning.
Rock the J2, JD!
I'm Just Glad...
Trevor Cahill is not able to pitch in the playoffs.
I'm not so sure
There might be a loophole in the the MLB post-season roster rules that allows TB to add him.

EG just posted an article about why Gentry is playing LF.
TL;DR version: Wash makes no sense.
While Gentry has played regularly against left-handed hitters lately, he hasn’t played left. He’s had one start all season in left – on Sept. 25 vs. Seattle – and only four in his career. When the Rangers had a fully healthy lineup, the club played Gentry in center and Josh Hamilton in left. Hamilton, however, has already been told he would be playing center in the playoffs and manager Ron Washington said he didn’t want to “mess” with Hamilton’s mindset.
Wow.

It’s unfortunate we weren’t able to add another RH hitter in July. Having Gentry in LF and particularly Torrealba at DH are wasted opportunities at non-key defensive positions.
On the other hand...
Nelson Cruz bats 7th for us. So… that’s pretty good.

Wash knows more about
Josh’s mental weakness than we do.
As much as I agree with everyone else on Gentry playing in center, there are mental aspects to the game outside of range/stats and that is one thing I trust Washington on.
This is what it's come to, folks.
The team is so good that we’re left with nothing to complain about except that Josh Hamilton, one of the best defensive outfielders still playing, might be slightly less than a perfect fit in center, and that the left fielder is dramatically overqualified.
Josh
isnt “one of the best defensive outfielders” if you compare him to other center fielders.

Strawman argument regarding Jerry. His record without Jimmy is bad. Wash has contributed to improving the team each year he’s been there. Everyone wants to assume that because of Nolan and JD is when all the success came. This team shouldn’t have won 96 games, they have been “managed” up. How he handles the players such as Holland, Elvis, and Joshy has a lot to do with their success as players.

Talk more about this
How he handles the players such as Holland, Elvis, and Joshy has a lot to do with their success as players.
Honestly
whatever. I’ll give Wash credit for managing the players (always do). But that doesn’t mean every move he makes is exempt from criticism or that every criticism is framed around racism.
Anyway, I give him benefit of the doubt on a lot of these “I don’t wnat to mess with his mindset” moves but that doesn’t mean that everybody has to.
Holland didn't just figure out on his own
Wash had some part to play in that, the turning point was after Dutch Oven gave up something like 5 runs in an inning and a third against FL (or was it the Mets?) Either way, there was psychology invoked by Wash against Holland. Elvis had fits of immaturity, his preparation and intensity at the beginning of the season aren’t what they are now. Wash used some psychology at times this year. Remember when he sat him after he didn’t run out a grounder against Cleveland? That’s just one example we know of, I’m sure there were other examples behind the scenes. We know Josh is….troubled. The fact the guy falling to his death didn’t make Josh want to give it up altogether wouldn’t have surprised me. The guy isn’t stupid, but he does lack some mental strength if you assume that moving him from center to left would harsh his chi.

Maddux probably had more of an influence on Holland
And I have no idea what you are saying about Josh. You are using the death and his resilience as a reason he lacks mental strength. How does that make sense?
I think Wash had something to do with Hamilton being resilient in that situation
Typically Josh hasn’t been that mentally strong, when you take into account his drug problem, his falling into an embarrassing situation a couple of years ago and even this year, the way he treated the 3rd base coach after the infamous slide in DET. He came off as someone lacking maturity. On his own, I don’t think Hamilton could have handled the tragedy he had to see without Wash’s assistance.

You are talking out of your ass
you don’t know that Wash said anything to him. You don’t know that it wasn’t Pettis or Moore or Narron or his wife or his pastor (the last three I think are more likely). Or one of the players.
I seriously doubt Wash had anything to do with it. And I don’t think you’re right about Hamilton’s overall maturity at this moment.
Just a theory
disagree with it if you want. I live in Philly now (don’t ask) and Charlie Manuel doesn’t get any scrutiny like I’ve seen on here. And if you know anything about Philadelphia fans….they aren’t happy unless they’re moaning about something. They have a much richer history of baseball than down in the DFW area. That is a fact.

Charlie Manuel is managing one of the best rotations that have ever been put together

And he’s been managing for a lot longer than Wash. And he’s won the WS.

by Robert L. Bishop on Sep 30, 2011 2:09 PM CDT up reply actions
the intensity with which the decision is questioned
is surprising, I think, considering that Wash has accomplished more with this team in the past 2 years than in the previous 40. I’m sorry I don’t live in your world where people are all treated the same regardless of how they look and/or act. Or speak. Granted if Wash was more polished, he might be treated a little differently, if he was as sharp and as well-spoken as Reggie Jackson for example (160 IQ) with the same credentials he might be treated a bit differently. I will concede that. It’s not strictly about the color of his skin.

This is from Rosenthal's series preview...
The Rangers will start left-handers C.J. Wilson and Derek Holland in the first two games, and lefties in perhaps four of five games if the series goes the distance. The Red Sox, given their vulnerability to left-handed pitching, would have been an ideal opponent for Texas. The Rays, not so much.
Although the Rays’ offense is barely average for an American League team, it does match up better against lefties than righties.
Weren’t the Red Sox the best team in the league at hitting LHP? Or second-best, at least?

I think they fell to third best.
But for most of the season it was Yankees first by a lot and then Red Sox. And then Rangers. I think Rangers passed them after killing Anthony Vasquez a few times and Charlie Furbush.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
And for the record... the Rays are like 9th in the ML against LH.
They are the worst against LHP in the AL playoffs. NYY, TEX & DET are all better… BOS would have been better too.

Sorry
a good Youkilis for most of the season. He wasn’t awful but he wasn’t particularly great this year
But I take that back
heavy splits, was pretty good against lefties.
Maybe there is something to that then.
Second best
the Yankees are insane against lefties. The Red Sox are merely .352 wOBA against lefties, which is better against righties
\I honestly don’t know where that meme about the Red Sox is coming from. I guess because Gonzalez and Papi are lefthanded?

I love when power hitters get more walks than strikeouts
Of course the ultimate would be more homeruns than strikeouts… Pujols almost did that a while ago. Bonds did once.
Yeah,
but what happened to their walk rates?

That says nothing about him.
I actually would be surprised if it wasn’t good. But I also heard him talk about it a few times and he wasn’t ever great at explaining what Wall Street principles were actually applied. That could just be the interviews weren’t really a great forum to explain in detail.
He didn't get into the intricate details.
A book like that would probably be a hard sell even if you could convince the Rays to draw the curtain back that far.
