Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

Friday morning Rangers things

Really looking forward to the weekend, you guys.

Nolan Ryan says he is optimistic about getting a deal done with Yu Darvish. Keith Law, incidentally, said in a chat session yesterday that the Astros had a better chance of winning the 2012 World Series than Darvish had of returning to Japan for 2012 without signing with Texas.

Gerry Fraley writes that the Rangers have inquired on longtime Ryan favorite Roy Oswalt, who is still a free agent, after an injury-plagued season in Philadelphia.

Jeff Wilson has a story about Michael Young being named the team's Player of the Year for 2012, and lists all the Ranger award winners from this year.

Anthony Andro has a story on Craig Gentry, who says that he is hoping to win the everyday centerfield job for 2012.

Todd Wills' notes includes quotes from Adrian Beltre on being healthy, and Michael Young on a calm offseason, after last year's drama-filled offseason.

Darvish

Confidence based on what? Last I heard ’Vish was at $100 mil for 5 years. The Rangers were at “Dice K money”. Any new information?

Most arguments are really about context.

by SheaWasBettor21 on Jan 13, 2012 8:20 AM CST reply actions

you will hear tons of things as part of the negotiations...just trust in Nolan

The bottom line is if he truly wants to play in MLB then he’ll sign. All indications are that he wants to.

It will be close to Daisuke money that he signs for.

There doesn’t need to be new information.

We knew the day the Rangers won the bid that there would be tons of “He wants too much!” and “He may stay in Japan!” fretting and rumors… but at the end of the window… he’ll sign.

His agents are just trying to do what they can with limited leverage.

I'd be shocked if it's below Dice-K money.

This is 5 years later and isn’t Darvish supposed to be better?

Why would it be close to Dice K $$$ ?

Darvish's team does not want him to come back.

The posting fee is three times their annual salary. If Darvish had any intention of pitching in Japan again next year he wouldn’t have posted.

I have no idea because these are uncharted waters but my guess would be in the $ 115 – 120 million range.

That isn't how it works.

Darvish has no leverage. If the Rangers don’t sign him they get their posting fee back. And they have 5 good starters still.

The Rangers want him but they won’t pay anything to get him.

by Heebs on Jan 13, 2012 9:42 AM CST up reply actions

If the Rangers are interested in Oswalt (and God knows why, but whatever)

That means Harrison, Lewis, or Holland is getting traded, not that Feliz starts the year in AAA.

Doing the math...

5 years at $58 million is $11.6 million per year. If he is a bust, the Rangers lose but not as badly as a six year contract. If he is a major success, he hits free agency at age 30 where he can go for 6 years at $120 million. Not going to six years is an advantage for both the Rangers and Yu. The only disadvantage for the Rangers is if he is absolutely great during that time period. But nobody absolutely knows he will be great over the next five or six years.

One of the reasons Kinz played so well is because he was

able to rest (thus, stay healthy) and not play 2B every day.

Sure cool to have a super-sub like Face to play 2B for 14 games and hang an OPS of 1065,

When Beltre broke down and spit out the bit in late July, Face moved over to 3B because that’s what the team needed….there was a division title to be won…and Face hung up a .818 OPS in 40 games at 3B this year.

Your on the road stats are really strange,

considering that all wins are important on the road and at home. So if you get more wins at home, and an at home stat that helps win games, there is no particular advantage to better at home stats considering that there were more wins at home.

I think it boils down to you don’t like Beltre. Napoli had great home stats and great road stats, and if he had more at bats, and more games played he probablly shoiuld be team MVP. I really think the Rangers award things to Face to try to keep him happy. But I don’t think he had the best year on the team, although he certainly had a very good year.

by Philar on Jan 13, 2012 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

It doesn't have anything to do with not liking Beltre.

He was a great player at home and when healthy.

He wasn’t a very good hitter on the road.

And if you think the Rangers gave Face the Player of the Year award to keep him happy, that’s simply wrong.

He earned it…Big Dick Durrett said last night every player he spoke with on the team thinks Young was their MVP and so did Wash.

So did Nolan.

So your agruement, no illogical statement is...

Young was the MVP, but not the best player. Or are you saying that Josh was the best player, but didn’t play up to his capabilities? So let’s say the Face had the fourth best season on the team behind Kinsler, Beltre, and Naps.

That would mean that Young surpased those three players because of the intangibles such as leadership. And your statement that Josh was the best player on the team, ……..Oh I give up! This is incorrect.

He had over 1.000 OPS in April on the road and over .850 in July.

He was mid .500’s for May and June.

So in three out of the five months of the year, his road numbers were above average.

Michael Young had a .400 road OPS in June and a .700 road OPS in September? What kind of pitching was Michael Young seeing September to see his numbers dip?

That means September pitching had nothing to do with. It was April, July and September pitching he did well against.

I didn't make excuses either.

Beltre had two shitty months on the road. It happens.

Just like Young’s June happened. I don’t think Young is incapable of hitting because he had some bad stretches.

Players have bad stretches.

Ian Kinsler legitimately performs worse on the road… he has his whole career. The same with Mike Young.

Beltre has a career of doing better on the road… there is no reason to think he is incapable of hitting on the road or that he needs RBIA just because he had two bad months of road hitting. Unless you have an agenda. Then by all means.

by Josey Wales on Jan 13, 2012 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

It's more meaningful

Than a two month stretch that wasn’t great.

His best road month was April when feasted on the weak underbelly of April pitching.

And then he feasted on the weak underbelly of July pitching before getting hurt.

Then he feasted on the weak underbelly of September pitching… picking up right where he left off when he got shit working in July.

It’s not the park that he needs… it’s the normal variance for major league hitters to have ups and downs.

Two months versus twelve years. Or if you want to throw his entire career out…

141 PA in two months that were bad…. 142 PA in the other months that was fantastic. That’s just last year… AND IT SURROUNDED HIS SHITTY MAY AND JUNE. So it’s not exactly symptomatic.

Done with this topic… take the last word. It’s been made very obvious that Beltre doesn’t need RBIA to hit. Including last year.

We have very reasonable baseball discussions when the whole thread is not sidetracked to go over the things that he sees differently than many.

And there are a lot of disagreements as well. They just don’t come up over and over again, and if someone shows facts to base their thoughts upon, often times people concede the point in a friendly manner and move on.

And I agree with him.

by Snark on Jan 13, 2012 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

I see, I think that opinion is justifiable.

I don’t necessarily agree, but I don’t think it’s outside the realm.

I was more talking about the value of Young versus what we have paid for him, and we have overpaid. He’d have to repeat 2011 a couple of more times to make me ok with his contract as a whole.

by FuturePants on Jan 13, 2012 3:22 PM CST up reply actions

Taking it a bit further.

I think he 2009 was the first year of the contract, and was probably also worth it.

2010 definitely wasn’t.

So in his first three years of the 5 year deal, he’s had two good and one bad.

He’s getting older so that’s worrisome… but if he has two more good years it won’t be a bad deal. Even one more good year in the next two will make “okay”.

I think given Young's 2009 and 2010

That he would have to have two more years at least as valuable as 2011 in order for him to even make the contract “not bad.”

Basically, I’m not as high on his value in 2009 as you are, and combined with his 2010 and 2011, that makes me skeptical of his ability to return value on his contract.

Well... "not bad" and "okay"

Are subjective terms.

Not bad means that… it wasn’t bad and punching myself in the face isn’t necessary.

Okay means… I’m thinking about punching myself in the face, but I’m glad it wasn’t worse.

After 2010 I thought he was done and we had three years of face punching coming.

I don't

He will likely end his career with a .300 average, close to or over 3000 hits, a Gold Glove, at least 8 All Star appearances, at least 2 WS appearances and hopefully at win or 2. Plus, he is extremely well liked and respected by people like Evan Grant who vote for it.

How long do you think it takes

for Young to rack up 939 more hits?

Because without 3,000 his case for the Hall is pretty damn weak.

I think he has seven All-Star appearances to date, and he’s never finished in the top 5 of the MVP voting.

I’m not saying he has no chance — but I think he’s a long-shot right now, and would need at least two more 2011’s to make his case.

Even then, ask JD to his face if he wants to pay 4.5mm per WAR.

My mind just says throw ball throw hard and strike. - Marteen

by Keynes on Jan 13, 2012 10:44 AM CST up reply actions

You don't get to pay people exactly what they are worth.

That is how the system works. Team’s tend to substantially underpay young major league starters and tend to overpay older major league starters. In the end most guys who play at a starting caliber tend to be “overpaid” in the final years of their contracts, mostly because they paid a premium to buy out their free agency years.

The Rangers in 2011 were a lot better by having Young than they were if they didn’t have him. And in the end Young will be worth every penny the Rangers paid him over the course of his career. It sucks that he looks overpaid now but I’m not too worked up about it. He’s been a great Ranger, one of the best ever. And he was very good for the best Rangers team of all time.

Of course not. But I’ll place the blame on JD, not on Young if that happens. And I STILL think he’d be worth every penny he got paid over his time here. He was severely underpaid for a long time.

And as for proof, who cares. Nobody can prove anything in an argument like this. Don’t be ridiculous.

I can imagine.

Homers vs romanticists vs sabers vs traditionalists vs everything in between.

The Indians have just the right budget and fans to offer a nice balance of committing to good prospects, occasional big contracts to veterans that outperform, high upside sleeper acquisitions and filler veterans when it’s time to make a run for it. (i.e. They’re patient and poor enough to let a Brantley, Carmona or Laporta play through struggles, but they can also go get a Jimenez, Lowe, Masterson or Choo if there’s value. If there’s a guy they absolutely love, the cash is there, but they can’t afford to throw it around just to make a headline.)

I bet you remember, I think it was ’76, we had that back up catcher John Ellis I think. Came in a trade from Cleveland; he slid into second and wrecked his ankle. I was watching it maybe on a 7" black and white and could tell that was a bad bad hurt.

The Rangers are meeting with Fielder at a Dallas area hotel today, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets. It sounds as though the Rangers don’t consider Fielder and Yu Darvish mutually exclusive.

Telling Yu

The Rangers are going to have a presser for both of them.

Josh Hamilton: "I just show up, look at the lineup and play where I’m told. If they want me to catch, I’ll catch."
Jon Daniels on relationship with #Rangers Young: "I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." 2/19/11

Someone posted that rumor a while back, but I can't remember who. When they posted it, they even said

it would occur within 5-6 days. I think we’re a bit beyond that period, but I’m trying to remember who posted that on here.

Posted this in another thread

If what Norm said today is correct and the Yu deal is done then this makes sense.

Interesting....

I guess since our front office “supposedly” can’t multitask with negotiations………does this mean they have finished up the Yu contract?

- sigh -
