Keith Law Chat
Andrew (Centereach, NY) Why does the NCAA let a head coach leave his team and coach right away (like the Wagner HC) a little more than a month to go before the seasons starts but if a player did it for the same reason (closer/better for his family) he would have to sit a year? Klaw (3:27 PM) Because the NCAA treats its players as if it is doing them a favor by letting them play revenue-generating sports for free.
This is from the Keith Law chat session yesterday.

Why would someone ask Keith Law that question?

only non-scholarship players fit that category
And that constitutes a very small percentage of athletes among the revenue-producing sports
Eh, they are still getting about a 1000% ROI
@AdamLikesBeer If you are in Minneapolis I can tell you where to get a good brew.

Only a small percentage of them
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
Seems it's comparing apples to oranges
Student athletes are not employees. Governing a coach’s ability to change jobs falls under an entirely different set of laws. It seems to me any rule the NCAA would create would quickly be undone via a lawsuit.
Of course, I’m not a lawyer. I only play one on message boards.

I think you're missing the point of Keith Law's comment there
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
Ask any graduate struggling with debt
And they’ll tell you they aren’t playing basketball for free.

True that...
Wish I could have graduated debt free. Thankfully I make enough to fully service the payments, but it’ll still be years to finish those things off and I’v’e been graduated for over 3 years now.

College baseball
College baseball is not a revenue-generating sport.
I understand Law’s comment with regard to football players at major universities, but it’s not really applicable to baseball players which is the context in which he made it.
