Well, he's never been quite as good as his physical talents say he should be.
Of course, his combine numbers said he should be godly. He’s fallen well short of that, but that still means he’s a very good player.

but spent plenty of time in SF and NO.
I prefer NO in February but the Bay Area the rest of the time to live. I love both of those cities, though.

My contention of "overrated"
is more based on the perception of the value of closers as compared to all players, not the value of Eckersley relative to other closers.
Because he was a reliever.
He was one of the best relievers of all time.
He was nowhere close to that echelon as a starter (although he was great in his prime).
I just think the uniqueness of his career leads to him being overrated.

I do think there’s a premium beyond measured wins and value for consistency year in and year out.
I need to think about this… but I think as a measure of true talent, someone who is low variance has an added value that is not obvious when you just aggregate individual seasons of value.
It’s part of why I’m interested in Fielder… year in and year out he’s an elite hitter. He’d be the only person on our roster who could say that.
Rivera has taken that level of elite consistency about as far as you can.

Want stats? Romo has a 102.4 QB rating. Manning sits at 90.3 Romo has thrown for 29 touchdowns to Manning’s 26. Romo has only tossed nine interceptions to Manning’s 13. Yeah, well what about their completion percentages? Romo is at 65.4%, a full five points higher than Eli. On throws 20 yards downfield or more, Romo’s accuracy percentage (a PFF stat that accounts for throw aways, spikes, dropped balls, etc) is 55.9%. Manning’s is 46.7%
Not a fan of PFF? OK, what about Football Outsiders? While Eli has thrown for 700 more raw yards than Tony Romo, that is more of a function of the Giants not having any semblance of a running game this season. FO’s DYAR stat measures how well a player performs better than the average replacement player. Basically, if you take a player out and put an average backup in the exact same game situations, this is how much yardage he’s worth.
Romo’s DYAR is 1560 to Manning’s 1187. This despite playing in 1 1/2 less games than Eli. His DVOA percentage (Defense-Adjusted Value Over Average) is 36.7% compared to Manning’s 19.9%. This stat puts in percentage terms how much better a player is than the average replacement.

I think they have value...
But I’m unsure on how much to assign them. There is meaning… but there’s also a tremendous amount of noise because of all the factors like system, play calling, offensive line scheme and talent and all the talent of everyone around them.
I’m curious how much actual testing has been done on the advanced metrics to try and weight the values properly.

Pro Football Focus's stats are based on scouting similar to UZR in baseball.
My friend Tony Pisano does the same thing for cornerbacks.
That’s the same thing K.C. Joyner does.
I used to watch all the shortcuts when I had oodles of time and keep my own notes. It was nice being able to say “I watched every play this season.”

My level of confidence in the opinion Romo is better than Manning is pretty tiny, because there’s tons of noise. If God told me Manning was better, it wouldn’t shock me at all.
The problem is not accepting we don’t know, it’s with insisting on the reverse (or the same) with nothing to go on other than what you want to think, or what stood out most from the few games you watched, or what ESPN said, or some combination of them, not bringing anything to back it up, and then acting like it’s some strongly-supported statement.
The best we have isn’t very good at all.

For the most part, I’ve decided football arguments are worthless because no one is going to have strong support, but everyone wants to be right instead of expressing thoughts.
I haven’t done much in the way of ranking players, or debating relative greatness for a long time. And my interest in football message boards has disappeared as a result.
Instead, I watch the games and the games alone and love the fuck out of it. It’s refreshing.

I'm actually very interested in this.
A large part of why I like Pandora is because I find the Music Genome Project fascinating. Particularly since I’m not a big music person, it’s cool to be told what my tastes are since I couldn’t tell anyone myself.
Anyway, I’m interested how they apply that to comedy. I’ll probably play with that tonight.

Brees has the same weakness that many QBs do.
Part of what makes him great is an ability to pick up and destroy blitzes, no matter how creative.

Manning's problem was actually always struggling with creative blitzes.
He’d fit lethal passes quickly if you didn’t send anyone, whether the front four got through or not. It made him more interesting to me.

I understand, I don't think it's a horrible opinion.
There’s merit to it… my opinion is that you’re absorbing too much risk when you HAVE to score in that situation.
And if the Saints had no timeouts and you could basically kneel twice and then kick… I’d do that.
But with the two minute warning coming up and them having two timeouts… unless you get another first down they have at least a minute left probably. And then you have not only execute and score… but you still have to keep them from getting a FG in that final minute.

I'm trying to think of playoff games I've enjoyed more than this.
A tight Super Bowl is hard to top because of the atmosphere they usually have, and the stakes. I won’t remember this more fondly than XXXIV, even though it was a better game with context stripped.
But as far as non-SB postseason games. . . I can’t immediately think of one.

So I know this guy who's a Saints/LSU fan, who has the most obnoxious fanboy sports statuses you can imagine.
A lot of our friends block him during sports.
He posted a big “WHO DAT” comment in a group right before the VD touchdown. Just like he called the National Title in the bag after the first Bama game.
The sports gods are punishing his arrogance.
