Saturday a.m. Rangers things
Saturday morning, and for once, there's actually some Ranger-type news out there this weekend morning.
Jeff Wilson writes that, while the Rangers met with Prince Fielder yesterday, a source says Fielder is just a backup plan in case Yu Darvish doesn't sign.
Richard Durrett wonders whether the Rangers could afford to sign both Fielder and Josh Hamilton long-term, or if signing Fielder means letting Hamilton walk after the 2012 season. Evan Grant notes at the DMN that the Rangers have not made much headway with Hamilton on a contract extension beyond 2012, and it is unlikely that the Rangers could afford to sign both Fielder and Hamitlon.
One of the ongoing questions this offseason has been what the Rangers are going to do about centerfield, and Ron Washington says that there's going to be an open competition for playing time in center this spring, with Julio Borbon, Craig Gentry, and Leonys Martin all battling.

Who would be totally okay with a Borbon/Gentry timeshare in CF?

No
I pretty much expect that to be the case to start out the year. They’ll just figure out during ST how much time each one of them gets.

I'd be fine with it as long as they are just placeholding.
If Martin doesn’t show that he is indeed the future there, then I’ll be wanting to find something better.
I'd rather have Gentry get more time against RHP than a true platoon split.
Dat CF defense.

I agree with this
I’m all for Gentry in CF until Leonys is ready.
Gentry can walk just enough to more than likely not be a total sink at the plate, his speed should help his BABIP a bit.
And oooooh that defense.

I'm not advocating Gentry getting 500 PA or anything.
Just a ratio more like 50/50 in CF rather than the 30/70 he’d get as a RH in a platoon split.

Not really any “word”.
He’ll compete in spring training for the starting job but probably go to Round Rock to work on things. Hopefully by the middle of the summer he’ll be ready… but that’s just a guess.

That doesn't make that much sense
You’re talking about getting him, over the course of a season, 18 extra plate appearances that instead would be going to Adrian Beltre.
The tradeoff is making it much easier for the other team to neutralize both him and Hamilton with a good lefty reliever.

One of Josh's peculiarities...
Is that he has to bat in the first inning. It’s why he hits 3rd.

who would be more likely to sign an extension with the Rangers: Kershaw or Andrus?
Funny enough
I think it would be kershaw in a landslide. He’s from here, he’s lives here, we’re giving him a damn award this weekend. If the guy ever hits FA or we can acquire him, I’d be very confident he’d sign here long term. I’m also becoming more and more convinced Elvis is Jeter’s replacement.

It was exciting to hear Fielder was in Dallas
but that seems initiated by Boras and Fielder, not the Rangers. Over the next week or so we’ll hear about several meetings with other teams as Boras tries to get something going. I don’t think the chances of Fielder coming here are all that much higher than I did yesterday morning.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
I heard from the local beat writers that the Rangers may not even make a bid for Darvish.
Knowing that JD was sitting down talking to Prince and Boras is a significant step up in my expectations of signing him.
For most of the off season I thought it was about 1%… now I think it’s like 20%.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
To be more specific.
Much like the “we’re poor” smoke screen pre Darvish, the Rangers leaking info that shows their disinterest sounds like an attempt to give competitors something to think about before raising their offers. I don’t know how effective that is… but I take statements like “It’s plan B only” and “Boras wanted this, not the Rangers” with a massive grain of salt when it comes from known outlets of Rangers leaks. The Rangers gain no edge by making it look like they are pushing hard unless they just want to drive his price up.
Any “analysis” or word from a source has significant spin potential. Just like everything… take it with a grain of salt.
To me the most relevant bit is the factual piece that in mid January in a time where internal extension candidates and beat writers are saying everything is on hold until Darvish is done, JD and crew actually met with Fielder personally. They could have easily turned down a meeting like the Yankees did to C.J. if they had no interest.
I still think it’s unlikely he signs… but of everything we’ve heard… the fact they had a meeting means more to me than the spin from sources.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I'm not basing my thoughts on anyone's comments
just on the way it happened. I saw a report (Thursday, maybe) that Fielder was going to visit several teams, and the Rangers happened to be the first. I’m just using common sense.
Boras and Fielder requested a meeting, the Rangers aren’t going to say no even if they’re really not interested. But to me, the meeting only changes their level of interest if the vague discussion of terms was positive. I viewed the odds at 10% or so before the meeting. What was actually discussed in the meeting, which we can’t know, is the only thing that can move those odds for me.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
Teams do say no.
The Yankees said no to C.J. I’m sure Boras contacted every team in the league to see what interest might be there.
The teams that don’t say no are the ones that have at least some interest, even if it’s minimal.
And considering that the Rangers have very explicitly and publicly stated that they have zero interest in any big 1B acquisition and Mitch Moreland is their guy and they’re behind him 100%, this very public acknowledgement of what everyone already suspected is significant to me.
Not so significant that I think it’s likely to happen… but I think things have progressed if the Rangers are willing to publicly even acknowledge preliminary interest. It’s not quite a full 180… but it is a very definite direction change.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I don't think it's that significant
partly because I never believed that there was zero interest in the first place.

No
I think they’ve kicked the tires already, despite what Ryan said today.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
Me too.
And they’ve been able to do that without it being a spectacle and explicitly denying interest.
They could have continued that path if they chose… still talked but not publicly acknowledging it. Boras loves a mystery team.
The public acknowledgement is what is different and didn’t have to be done.

I'm trying to figure out what the angles are with this...
clearly chatting with Prince makes Yu’s team realize that Texas has some leverage; and talking to Texas can only induce a higher price out of other teams for Prince. But at the same time, it’s got to be more than just a mutually beneficial shallow relationsihp. Waiting doesn’t really seem to benefit Prince much; once Texas does sign Yu, he loses almost all of his “Texas may sign me if they don’t sign Yu” leverage…
So unless Texas is just stringing Boras along for their own purposes (which would be all types of awesome, given certain past inverse manipulations), something must be more legit here
Go Rice Owls!
Would be a Matt Harrison fan, but I only like superstars
I think the Yu angle means nothing.

Nolan said he didn’t expect to sign Beltre etc, and it happened 2 days later. This time, he’s optimistic about Yu. I’d think it’s pretty much done. I wonder what that number will be.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I think talking with Prince is just trying to see if the Rangers can get him on a high AAV, short term deal
If Prince is looking for a 1-3 year deal, I think the Rangers would have no problem with it. And hopefully this means that Yu is pretty much a done deal.
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
That is what I'm thinking.
What might be good for the Rangers is a one year deal. That sets up a scenario where at the end of this year, you could resign Prince, resign Josh, or neither (or both actually). i.e. if Prince hits .330 with 60 HRs and Josh has another injury plagued season, they can sell resigning Prince and letting Josh walk.

I think as Boras and Fielder requested the visit
it would be used as leverage to perhaps Washington or another club to try and get the best deal possible there. Boras knows he doesn’t have much leverage as is, especially since there seem to be so few suitors. Boras needs to create more of a market or at least the perception of a market for Fielder. It will be interesting to see what type of deal Fielder gets, and from whom. I don’t mind us signing him, though.

does that mean that Moreland is definitely gone or do they entertain the idea of keeping as a bench bat and sometime starter in right?

I don't see how
Your bench is set up to be:
Backup catcher
UIF
Platoon CF
Murphy
There’s no room there for Moreland, unless you want to jettison Murphy. I guess you could get rid of the 2nd member of the CF platoon, but then you’ve got Moreland basically duplicating what Murphy gives you.

I think you could trade Murphy
Moreland gives you worse COF defense, but I think you could expect that bat to be about the same. Except Moreland comes at a much cheaper cost and is young enough to hope that he can still improve some whereas Murphy is likely not going to see his value rise much going forward.
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
Why wouldn't you put Moreland in AAA for the time being?
by Adam J. Morris on Jan 14, 2012 11:35 AM CST up reply actions
It depends on if you can get anything decent for Murphy
I think the Rangers could find a good trading partner for Murphy where both teams are happy. If not, and the team signs Prince, you pretty much are forced to have Moreland in AAA, but that wouldn’t be my preference. But I really don’t know that Moreland and Murphy are that different offensively from this point forward and one costs a lot more. Do you think that Murphy is significantly better than Moreland?
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
I don't think the Rangers
would keep Moreland over Murphy. Don’t let last year cloud your judgement of Murphy.
by RangerMad on Jan 14, 2012 11:50 AM CST via Android app up reply actions
Its not just last year
He’s a 30 year old platoon hitter who will be making a few million dollars this year. He was really bad for most of last year, but my concern is more just what we can expect from him going forward. Its not like he was that great at his peak. Murphy’s value was as a good defensive COF who can hit righties well and was very cheap. If he’s not going to be cheap anymore and we have someone who you could expect to hit righties about as well, I don’t see why the Rangers would prefer Murphy over Moreland.
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
I don't think Moreland is a long-term option as a 4th outfielder
He only really plays one outfield position, and doesn’t play that all that well.
I’d rather let him stay in AAA, show he’s healthy, rebuild his value (because I suspect his value isn’t all that high right now), have him come up during the season if Cruz or Hamilton go on the d.l., and potentially be ready to replace Cruz or Hamilton in 2013.
by Adam J. Morris on Jan 14, 2012 11:50 AM CST up reply actions

Moreland has to have more trade value than Murphy….Borbon more trade value than Gentry? Also, by signing Darvish, they have an extra SP….

With Martin Perez and Neil Ramirez at #8 and #9
I don’t see the Rangers having any interest in Oswalt or Garza, but if they were to add either of those guys, a current member of the rotation would have to be included in the deal.

I had more fun when it was in the ballpark. Didn’t go this year because they only thing I was interested in was the Q&A with the players, otherwise you spend $20 to walk around a shit load of people standing in line for stuff I didn’t want to stand in line for.

I haven't been in many years.
But this year they were doing lottery tickets for autographs. Plus they only allowed each player to sign like 170 or something. So basically I got there when it started (11:00) and got in line for Profar’s autograph. After about an hour I was told I wouldnt get an autograph. The food was super shitty too. They gave me a refund so I’m not pissed, but I wouldnt recommend going.
Son and I got lucky
Ended up winning the Nolan Ryan autograph lottery and then a lady that was leaving gave us her two numbers for Josh and damn if one of those didn’t win too!
The player Q&As were fun but I would agree that the lines for autographs were HUGE and Spring Training is a better experience.
