Vermaelen might be back so it might not be a complete pearing

but I’m not expecting much.

Also, despite his mehness Arteta was really missed today.

Arteta’s no Wilshere of course but seems like he does everything required of a pivot pretty well.

You're giving United too much credit.

Their defensive situation isn’t great and a recently un-retired 37 year old is the 2nd best midfielder they have. They’re in bad shape too.

meh they did not look well all game

cesc missed some easy chances (and didnt look all that great in the 2nd half)

alexis played well though, and messi was messi.

Guardiola unveiled another wrinkle in the weekend’s matchup with Real Betis: no centre-forward. Sánchez moved to Andrés Iniesta’s psuedo-winger role from the December Clásico, and with Fàbregas still playing in midfield, the most advanced of Barça’s central players was Messi as a deep-lying playmaker. Not having a centre-forward meant Barça would have a sort-of redundancy elsewhere on the pitch, and Guardiola essentially decided that the three of Sánchez, Iniesta and Fábregas would play two positions. A supersaturation of sorts.

Most notably, the second half saw Guardiola unveil an entirely new shape and tactics for Barça. Where they’ve gone 4-2-4 before, they’ve never gone 4-2-4 with their fullbacks pushing forward. While they’ve gone 4-2-4 before, they’ve never gone 4-2-4 with Busquets dropping into the back-line when required to as he does in their 4-3-3. While they’ve gone 4-2-4 before, they’ve never gone 4-2-4 with Messi and Sánchez complementing each other as they did on the right-half of the pitch.

Europe, why are you so cruel?

Quick season 4 FM update: my club, FC Krasnodar, finished 2nd in season three, so our European journey began in the Champions League third qualifying round. Got matched up against FC Midjtylland of Denmark and dispatched them fairly easily, only to get Porto in the playoff round. A surprising 1-0 victory at home, and we were just 90 minutes away from our first trip to the CL proper.

Yeah, that didn’t go well. 4-0 to Porto. So on to the Europa Group stage draw: Schalke, Lorient, and Neuchatel Xamax. Three fucking away games in western Europe. I hate you, UEFA.

Jamie Sanderson on Agudelo
Juan Agudelo – New York Red Bulls to Liverpool
Agudelo is rated as one of the best talents in America at present, and impressed on trial with Liverpool and German side Stuttgart over Christmas. The New York Red Bulls are willing to allow the 19-year-old to leave on loan, but Reds boss Kenny Dalglish would only be interested in a permanent deal, which isn’t on the cards. (Chances of it happening 1/10)

What kind of thought process is this?
"You have an 18-year-old kid making his first Premier League start and a player who’s captain of his country and they are querying the substitution? Let’s be serious."
"I’ve been 30 years a manager and made 50,000 subs and I have to justify every decision I make to you? I stand up for it. I do not have to explain to you every single decision I make."

by sprite on Jan 22, 2012 6:50 PM CST reply actions

He should've just said that Ox was tired.

By that logic Ox had no business starting the game over Arshavin.

by LiamP on Jan 22, 2012 6:52 PM CST up reply actions

He did.
"I can understand the fans are upset about the substitution, especially when it doesn’t work. It means I made the right decision at the start of the game (to play Oxlade-Chamberlain).

"He had started to fatigue. He was sick in the week. Arshavin is captain of the Russia national team.

Still don’t see what being captain of Russia means to anybody with the form he’s been in. Would’ve rather seen Benayoun on the pitch if he was indeed tired.

by sprite on Jan 22, 2012 7:01 PM CST up reply actions

The Ox

He didn’t really look tired. He still looked quite lively. I thought it was an odd substitution, and it definitely did not work. I agree that Benayoun would have been a better selection, since Yossi at least tries to play defense.

Also odd was not subbing out Theo Walcott after he was knocked unconscious for a full minute. Some of Arsenal’s woe’s this season have not been Wenger’s fault (losing Cesc and Nasri, the injuries at the back, etc.), but his management of the match yesterday was just mystifying. Wenger’s losing his touch.

and during a late night debate show on Spanish TV, one journalist claimed that Mourinho had decided to leave the club in the summer.

That was the subject of the first question as Mourinho prepared for the visit to Barcelona. “My colleague said that you are going to leave Madrid in the summer,” the coach was asked. “Are you?” The response was short and sharp: “Ask your colleague.” It was to prove the model for much of what followed. “Will you stay until you win the European Cup,” he was asked. “I don’t know.” And so it went on.

I'd probably upgrade Real Madrid's chances of beating Barcelona in a two-legged tie

from <1% up to maybe 5% after the recent performance.

Followed by who?

Maybe Pepe? Maybe Coentrao? And either one of them would surprise me. They’re making the best wages they’ll get outside of Manchester…they’ll stay as long as the next manager wants them.

Real will be fine with or without Mourinho. At a club like United, the manager is the most important person. At a club like Real, managers have been, are and always will be interchangeable as far as their directors are concerned.
