Spin.
Too many people say one has nothing to do with other.
Too many people said we had no money and wouldn’t even bid on Darvish.
We still may not get Fielder… but Darvish won’t be the reason why.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I disagree with you
Occam’s razor. It makes the most sense that our budget isn’t suddenly $Texas and that signing Darvish to a huge deal does finally break our bank (for all practical purposes). I think they’ll try to extend Kinsler and some of the young pitchers but they just don’t have the money for both.
We'll never know.
But this was said pre-Darvish bid. Clearly the Rangers like to sandbag. Maybe that’s what this is… maybe it isn’t.
But when Ben Rogers is absolutely convinced (and he had us winning the Darvish bid hours before release, definitely has inside sources) that one has nothing to with the other, I believe that more than I do T.R.’s statement.
Given the amount of disagreement on how much our TV contract is and clear intentional misleading by the Rangers… I don’t know that I do believe that we don’t have $Texas. I honestly don’t know… which is just the way the Rangers want it.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I have 3 billion reasons why we could afford Fielder
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
wishful thinking on your part
sorry to say. It would just be so out of bounds for the way this front office usually operates. And, despite the excitement I feel looking at the Rangers lineup with Fielder in it, it just makes way too much sense for them to utilize 1B/DH with Young/Napoli/Moreland and see what Moreland does with good health.
Some see a glass half empty, some a glass half full. I see a glass that's twice as big as it needs to be. - George Carlin
So...
The multiple articles saying we might not even bid on Darvish and were incredibly cash poor… those weren’t intentional efforts by the Rangers to mislead as to their financial situation to potentially manipulate the market?

This is pretty convincing
and not exactly old:
If the Rangers get Darvish’s deal done as expected, they are not expecting to sign free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder. The Rangers met with Fielder and his agent Scott Boras on Friday in Dallas in what was described as a “preliminary meeting.”
The Rangers were willing to meet with Fielder because they wanted to have a backup plan in place in case a deal with Darvish did not get done. There is still a remote possibility that negotiations with Darvish fall through. In that case, Texas might turn its attention to Fielder.
But club officials continued to stress that the Rangers don’t plan on signing both Darvish and Fielder. The team has made it clear that its focus is on pitching, and it expects to sign Darvish by Wednesday.
The very similar paragraph about Oswalt
was equally convincing. They’re not signing Oswalt.

Between Strasburg, Zimmerman and Gio they've got a pretty good front 3 in their rotation
A very good back end of the bullpen with Clippard and Storen, and a solid center of the lineup with Morse and Zimmerman. They get one more strong offensive piece in there and they’d have a great foundation for years.
It seems like he should take 4 max or try for 8.

Like GoET said it sounds like he doesn’t want a chaparone anymore. Maybe he thinks he doesn’t need it which is fine but the problem would be if he doesn’t want someone looking over his shoulder.
He’s already had someone helping him, everyone knows it so there’s no shame in continuing it. He’s a huge investment and needs to realize that fact. And he/team can afford so if it helps accept the help.

I think I just realized...
Josh Hamilton is about to get traded. I don’t think Texas can afford Yu + Fielder, but all the winds seem to be blowing in the Fielder & Texas love birds; while these little stories on Hamilton seem increasingly bizarre (the accountability partner stuff, the odd extension demands).
Call me crazy, but more and more I can imagine something like this happening. They sign Yu to something like 6/70. They then sign Fielder to a ridiculously large contract (7 years for I don’t even want to think about what the $ will be) and trade Hamilton and a pitcher; maybe Ogando (or Lewis if they sign Oswalt as well) to someone like the Phillies for Dom Brown or something like that.
I’m not advocating this… but right now I see two guys who seem to be the Rangers future and one guy who is increasingly looking like the soon to be dumped girlfriend….

you're reading way too much into the accountability partner stuff
The primary reason Narron came here was to watch Josh. That, and the fact that Josh has said that if MLB wants him to have one (which could be speculation on his part, although he did throw it out there) then he’s fine with that, so it sounds to me that MLB has suggested to some degree that the team get him one. If Josh were traded now, the demons would be included. If his AP had been his father-in-law, he probably would have followed Josh to another team. Maybe not, but why (in the eyes of his father-in-law) would it matter where Josh plays? I think it finally hit Chadwick what this job would mean – being away from his home all year, being with his son-in-law 24/7, and that the costs outweighed the benefits.
What’s odd about contract extension stuff, given that the Rangers are trying to work out Yu and Prince right now, plus players don’t want to deal with contract garbage once the season starts? His ST ultimatum is a normal one.
Maybe they will trade Hamilton, but I don’t see how these two things point to it.

he gets traded I really think it will be to either the Nats or the Orioles. Both teams are fairly close to where he grew up and both have reasons to acquire him.
Orioles – May feel like they need to make a splash with everything that is going on around them. Have some cash to spend on retaining Hamilton and have the pieces that would interest the Rangers. I know that Adam Jones is a little more sizzle than steak but I could see a swap of that nature.
Nationals – If Hamilton gets traded that means Fielder has been signed most likely. The Nats have been looking for an impact bat all off season. They too have some money to spend on retaining Hamilton. DC is fairly close to North Carolina as well. They definitely have a few players that would interest the Rangers (and no im not suggesting strasburg or harper or
If Hamilton does get traded then it would either have to be for an MLB ready OFer or it would mean that the Rangers are then going to make another trade to acquire a replacement. Either way, as you suggest, a trade of Hamilton will not garner a massive return due to the issues why the Rangers wont give him a massive contract.

Orioles have no reason to do it.
Nationals can just wait to sign him until the offseason (plus they already made a big trade this offseason).
And I still don’t see why signing Fielder would be an indication that they’d trade Hamilton, instead of a sign that they’re preparing to move on from Hamilton post-2012. He’s too valuable to the 2012 Rangers to trade.
