5 OFs, yes

but that includes 2 of the 3 – murphy, borbon, gentry being benched. I think the only way we sign Spilborghs, is if we can get him on a minor league deal for a platoon with Murphy when one of our injury prone OFs goes down.

He can, in the sense Murphy can play CF

He doesn’t play it well at all, though. And he also isn’t much of a hitter, so getting his bat out there doesn’t do anything to help that much.

Is that Joel Hanrahan must be a Boras client, right?

Yeah after I posted that...

I went to go look at his stats and was pretty surprised at how good he did last year. I still think it’s premature to call a reliever with a couple of good years a star though – especially with how much volatility there is in that position, but I see your point.

Seems like the Rangers would've checked on the events at the hotel prior to their Prince meeting.
their clandestine meeting last week with Fielder at the Four Seasons in Dallas only leaked because the wedding of Pirates star reliever Joel Hanrahan (yet another star player the Rangers have tried for this winter) happened to be at the same hotel at the same time, so the players and agents at the wedding started telling people they had seen Fielder and/or agent Scott Boras with Rangers brass Nolan Ryan, Texas’ icon and managing partner, and GM Jon Daniels.

Or, maybe it wasn’t a misstep, but just part of the woo-ing of Darvish.

Here are things we know.

We know that journalists both local (Wilson & Grant) and national (Rosenthal) wrote articles just before the Darvish posting period stating the Rangers were extremely cash deficient and would likely make a very small bid or perhaps none at all.

Then we find out the Rangers had a record setting bid of $51.7M.

This makes me think the Rangers are intentionally using outlets such as the beat writers and Rosenthal to artificially depress the market around players they are interested in.

Ben Rogers & Bob Nightengale, neither of whom I would characterize as “mouthpieces” for anyone (T.R. certainly is for the Rangers) are both pretty insistent that the Rangers can afford both Fielder and Darvish if they choose. Those are credible folks, Nightengale routinely has very good insider information and Rogers broke us getting Darvish hours before it was official and has been known to have good inside info on the Rangers before.

I’m not saying we’re definitely going to sign Prince. I’m not even saying we definitely have the money to.

I’m saying the Rangers clear attempts to mislead on the state of their finances and contradictory information from sources I believe to be credible is enough to not take T.R.’s statement at face value.

I think Ben Rogers had the story maybe 45 minutes before it broke

I don’t know that Bob Nightengale’s insider status has been proven other than he had the Darvish story first (by a few minutes). I don’t see how you can be sure of the “clear attempts to mislead on the state of their finances” when writers from both sides got the story wrong.

And beyond that, my point is different. Heyman, who this board has thought of as a Boras mouthpiece, had the opportunity to say that the Rangers are real suitors for Fielder. The best he could come up with is “most people don’t see it the Rangers have surprised us before.”

I don’t think anybody knows the exact state of the Rangers finances but I don’t know that it means that the Rangers are scheming to purposely release misinformation. At the very least, it makes more sense to do that stuff with Yu than Fielder. I can’t imagine the Rangers will be allowed to swoop in on Fielder without Boras shopping the bid.

by ab03 on Jan 17, 2012 11:07 AM CST up reply actions

I may be mistaken on when Rogers had the story first.

I know Jeff Passan at Yahoo who broke it nationally sat on it for like 3 hours until he got confirmation. I may be jumbling the times for those two items accidentally. Rogers definitely had it before it was confirmed.

Nightengale’s insider status has nothing to do with Darvish. He’s a national writer with sources. He breaks things all the time. I’m not aware of him having any sort of taint like Jon Heyman.

Do you think the Rangers did attempt to mislead Rosenthal, Grant & Wilson regarding what they were going to be able to bid for Darvish and if not, where did that information come from?

Also...

I agree that Boras will shop the Rangers bid. I think it’s unlikely Fielder signs here.

But the rumors (and this IS wishful thinking, though possible, unlikely) that Fielder REALLY wants to play here.

If Fielder has made up his mind he’s going to be a Ranger, it doesn’t matter if Boras shops the offer.

And more to my point.

That’s the reason Fielder won’t sign… not because we’ll be completely tapped out by Darvish.

I think the Rangers would find a way to budget for Fielder if he agreed to terms they were comfortable with. You could pay him a smaller amount in 2012 and then let Hamilton walk freeing up a fair amount of money.

And I think it is possible they will sign him… but you can’t possibly expect a player to turn down a lot of money just to play somewhere. It does happen… but rarely.

Well they know a WS winning baseball team can't attract fans so this is their next option

Man that is so embarrassing to even read.

Energy Team

That has to have a completely different connotation by now, right?

Example: Who first pops into your head with “Texas Rangers Energy Team”

Trolls.

Is there any content in this statement?
But the Rangers do seem to love the idea of signing Fielder

Yes,

“The Rangers seem to love the idea of forgoing alternatives in the future and making Prince the face of the team.”

Most arguments are really about context.

This and many of the other articles that are popping up like it seem to be Boras-engineered propaganda

aimed at making the Rangers decide to sign Fielder even after Darvish signs.

It seems to me like Fielder really wants to be a Ranger and the Rangers really don’t want to spend the money to sign both him and Darvish, and everything else is just an attempt to help persuade them otherwise.

no article is going to convince the Rangers to do anything

It might get page views from fans but it won’t move the front office.

Fielder is just waiting to see how Yu plays out

If a Yu deal doesn’t occur then he and Boras see that money going his way and drive up his price. But I still can see the Rangers signing him and Yu. Could be a short contract, could be a player-favorable opt out, could be dedicating future Hammy $, MY $ and TV $.

Football can go to hell. The Rangers aren't ready for football season and neither am I.

I actually wouldn't be shocked if something like that did happen

If we sign Yu I wonder if that means we would have to give Prince a longer deal and backload it more. If we somehow couldn’t get Yu signed maybe the Rangers offer Prince a shorter deal with the money spread out more evenly
