FanGraphs Top 15 Rangers Prospect List
A rather idiosyncratic list, with Rougned Odor and Robbie Ross at #5 and #6, Mike Olt behind Will Lamb, and Jake Skole at #12.

and the hits just keep on coming
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Odor
I’ve seen him listed as a SS in a few places…are they going to try to move him back to SS, or is staying at 2B?
by Adam J. Morris on Jan 17, 2012 12:42 PM CST up reply actions
I've only seen him play 2B
I think he has some of the necessary skills to handle shortstop; good actions, strong arm, instincts, etc. But I’d probably peg him as a 2B long-term, which obviously hurts his overall prospect value. Having seen guys like Sardinas, and Marte, and even Triunfel, I’d say their chances of staying at shortstop are much greater than Odor, who has enough athleticism for the position at the present, but lacks the type of above-average tools on defense that you want to see in a high-level shortstop.
that list is terrible
there are so many things wrong with it.

what a horrible list
how do you not have the second coming of Clayton Kershaw as #1?
#15? GTFO!
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
i saw a prospect "site"
that had buckel at like #33 IN BASEBALL

wow....this list.
NO This is why i dont come here so much anymore. it has become a destination for certain types which i am not. Love the rangers, not this -- Mark from OC on Arrested Development

Apparently they didn't get the memo that Sardinas also missed the last half of the season
when he had surgery on his other shoulder.
i am kind of
surprised that they missed some of these pretty basic things?
kirkman at #11? as a RP?

Fangraphs generally has pretty crappy prospects list
so it really shouldn’t surprise you that these lists seem like they were put together with about 5 minutes of googling.

Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
I think I remember
The Rangers drafting Ruben Sierra Jr, a few years ago. Does anyone know if he is still in our system, and/or how he’s doing?

He was in Short-A
in the Rangers organization in 2011.

Awful… awful… list.

Hahah.
That’s not too far off. I can’t decide if I’m more shocked by Olt that low or Odor that high.

I think it's organized by coolness of the prospect's name.

FanGraphs has me irked
Mostly because I switched from iOS to Android and their App is the only one I routinely used that had no Android alternative. Oh, and that list is funny.

I've never torn my ACL
But I’m pretty sure it takes about six months to recover.
I’ll call TTUs trainer. We had about 5 ACL tears a game this year, he should know.

so what does this do to those oddly ranked players trade value

Before I even read it, I have to guess: is it by Marc Hulet?
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Yep
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
So just more of the same from him, I'd imagine.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Just read it.
Yeah, that’s… well, that’s Hulet on Rangers’ prospects.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
wait, what?
Hulet: I’d say both are pretty much relievers at the MLB level… I have West as the sleeper as the players considered for that spot are lesser-known guys… Scheppers is too high profile for that spot and the sleeper is not necessary considered the 16th best prospect… I am in no way saying West is better than Scheppers.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.
I'll say it
West is better than Scheppers.

Thanks, Man
Very sudden. About to fly to Texas for his service. Heart attack at 39. That’s just not enough time.
I've got Scheppers two spots higher, but I think
West should end up with better command than Scheppers, and he’s got a higher ceiling as a result since both have two wipeout pitches.
Occasionally as a closer but nothing more than that
This is from the story I wrote on him last May…
“As a shortstop at Houston’s Bellaire High School, West never did much pitching. He would often come in and work as a one-inning closer, though little attention was paid to mechanics, and he never worked on the side as a hurler.”
Bellaire?

Welp.
I definitely don’t think those three guys are wrong. I’m rather familiar with the system… I just put added value on pitching and up the middle guys. As a result, Olt takes a small hit on defensive value, as well as a small hit for the injury (although not career threathening or chronic) and a small hit for age/level. He also has rather high strikeout rates and maintained a decent batting average in the past due to high BABIPs (not couting ’11 when his BABIP dipped along with his batting average). I’m also a fairly big fan of both Lamb and Sardinas so may have ranked them a little higher than others… although I haven’t seen any other their lists.
So there were enough question marks (and intriguing other options), for me, to be cautious in ranking Olt higher.

Olt takes a small hit for the injury...
But Sardinas doesn’t? I like FanGraphs but they shouldn’t be in the prospect business. Evaluations like this just make them look bad.
.
Yup. I am aware of Sardinas injury history. But he also has a strong pedigree than Olt, stronger overall tools and impressive results when he’s been able to get on the field. He was also performing at a young age even for the rookie leagues.
Prior to publishing the list I actually moved the 7-10 guys around a bit… For me they’re all very close and I wouldn’t argue a different ranking of the four.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
It really does make them look bad,
especially since it seems to engage in the same sort of baseball analysis that FanGraphs types have been ridiculing since “Fire Joe Morgan” was just a twinkle in Ken Tremendous’ eye.

"Personal info":
Alfaro was originally in the Top 15 but was a late cut. Jackson received some consideration, as did Guzman (although I don’t have enough personal info to rank him highly at this point), but Akins did not.
