Victor Martinez likely out for the 2012 season

ARLINGTON, TX - OCTOBER 15: Victor Martinez #41 of the Detroit Tigers reacts after deing defeated in Game Six of the American League Championship Series by the Texas Rangers eliminating them from the playoffs at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on October 15, 2011 in Arlington, Texas. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Per a variety of folks on Twitter it has been learned that the Detroit Tigers believe that Victor Martinez has torn the ACL in his left knee. It is expected that he will have surgery, and that he will be sidelined for the 2012 season.

That's a huge blow for a guy who was one of the key pieces on last year's A.L. Central champions. While Martinez caught occasionally last year, he was primarily a DH, and the Tigers will now likely be looking for an alternative on the free agent market.

There are several veterans out there looking for one year deals who could be a DH, with Johnny Damon -- who was with the Tigers in 2010 -- coming to mind as the obvious choice, particularly given the Tigers' history of working with Damon's agent, Scott Boras. Hideki Matsui and Vladimir Guerrero are also free agents, and the Angels are supposedly interested in moving Bobby Abreu and his hefty 2012 contract.

Magglio Ordonez, coming off a 634 OPS season in 92 games for the Tigers last season, could be an option, although that may be a situation where both parties are ready to move on.

i really hope the Angels get stuck with Abreu

Scioscia may let Abreu and Wells play every now and again, taking playing time away from Trout, Morales, and Trumbo.

I have to say I’m interested in what the Angels are going to do with their bench. They seem to have 14 guys who look like they should (or will) be on the ML roster.

Iannetta, backup catcher (Conger or Wilson), Morales, Trumbo, Pujols, Kendrick, Aybar, Izturis, Callaspo, Trout, Bourjos, Wells, Hunter, and Abreu.

I’m sure the Angels will be looking to trade 1 of them – (in this order) Wells, Abreu, Trumbo, and Izturis, but I think they’ll need Izturis to be their utility guy. I think Trumbo is the one who ultimately gets moved, I guess, but it seems funny to me that both Wells and Abreu will probably be their #4 and #5 OFs sitting on their bench a majority of the time, making a combined $30M+.

ARLINGTON — The Rangers expect that they will be able to announce sometime on Wednesday that they have signed Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish. They are not expected to announce who will lose his spot in the rotation. They will probably wait until Spring Training before moving Alexi Ogando back to the bullpen.

“My wish is to stay as a starter,” Ogando said Tuesday. “But if it happens I have to go to the bullpen, I’ll be OK with that. I will do what it takes to help the team. I will be up for it.”

I hope it more closely resembles an open competition for that fifth spot come ST.

Bullpen Material?

That is from whence he came. What is striking to me is the assumption many have that Harrison is bullpen material.

I don't think he is bullpen material

Even though they need a lefty, he is too good of a starter to waste in the bullpen More likely he would be trade material, although Ogando could be also. After a month of spring training, the Rangers will probably know who the five starters are, or who can be traded for value.

by Philar on Jan 17, 2012 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly.

And for the record, I like Ogando in the roto as well. But if circumstances dictate that one of them must go to the bullpen, I think Ogando is the best suited.

I voted that way, as well.

I just think Alexi has earned the right to be displaced by Neftali, and that it shouldn’t first be the other way around.

That's a good point.

Clearly Ogando is more suited for the bullpen than Harrison, what with his lack of secondary pitches, but it must seem odd to him that Neftali gets the nod ahead of him.

Who knows what will end up happening to Feliz, so it’s always nice to have a team-first guy in Ogando waiting in the pen.

I'd rather trade for Thornton and put Ogando in the bully

While keeping Harrison in the roto.

They want him to be a starter but the argument could be made

that his expected production as a starter this year could less than any of the other guys that could be in the rotation.

He also needs to develop consistency and control with his secondary pitches and there’s little harm to having do that in AAA until there’s an opening in the rotation.

And the organization could really want to see what Ogando is capable of in his second season as a starter, and if he continues to develop in only his 3rd year pitching professionally.

I don't think anything outside of an abysmal

Spring Training by Feliz would end up with him in AAA.

I don’t think they would have moved Feliz to the rotation if they didn’t have at least some expectation that he’d be as good or better than whatever alternative you/they could think of.

Feliz to AAA seems like one of the least likely possibilities to me.

Harrison doesn't?

Ogando has 2 years until he hits arbitration. He could be the setup man in 2012 and 2013 while Nathan is here and then be in line for the closer role in 2014. If hes lights out as a setup guy (which I think he can be) he could get a very nice first arb salary and then if he becomes a closer it could go way up.

Ogandos stuck making 500K a year for the next 2 years at least regardless of his role on this team

The service will be the highest profile name to join a growing campaign starting at midnight Eastern Time on Wednesday that will see it black out its page so that visitors will only see information about the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA).

The information will urge Wikipedia readers to contact their local congressman to vote against the bills. Other smaller sites leading the campaign include Reddit.com and Cheezeburger.
