Heyman: Darvish expected to sign six year deal

Jon Heyman writes that sources are telling him that a deal between the Rangers and Yu Darvish will get done today, with the contract expected to be a six year deal.

The deadline for the Rangers to sign Darvish is this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Central. The Rangers bid $51.7 million for the rights to negotiate with Darvish. If an agreement with Darvish is reached, that money goes to the Nippon Ham Fighters, the Japanese League team which owns Darvish's rights. If an agreement is not reached, the Rangers would not pay the Ham Fighters anything, and Darvish's rights would revert to them, where he would pitch for the 2012 season.

There had been earlier reports that a sticking point in the negotiations had been the length of the deal, with the Rangers wanting to lock Darvish up for six years, while Darvish was asking for just a five year deal. The Rangers are expected to pay Darvish around $10-12 million per season over the life of the deal.

it was on sale when I got it. When I first got into bourbon, Knob, Woodford, Gentleman Jack and Maker’s were all similarly priced ($24-27), but when I went last time, Woodford was $40! Knob was still similar and this Knob Reserve was ~$32

if i poured a bottle of your favorite beer in a glass, and then poured a draft of the same beer in another glass, do you think you could tell the difference just on taste?

by 6th street on Jan 18, 2012 2:33 PM CST up reply actions

Depends on the beer.

If it’s Bud Light? Wouldn’t have an idea.

Even beers that would be considered a small step up in quality, it may be difficult to tell for me, especially if I’m not familiar with it.

But with good, high quality beers? Yes, I think I could.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 18, 2012 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

An argument can be made that

bottle conditioning actually improves some beers. Chimay would be an example. In fact most Belgians “referment” in the bottle. (CO2 is created by the yeast eating the residual sugars in the beer, creating the carbonation, and also affecting the flavor, rather than CO2 just being forced into the beer while its in a keg.)

Yeah,

I was thinking about this more after I posted. I know that people age beers, and while I’ve had some older beers that I’ve kept in the wine fridge for long term storage, I’ve never done a year by year tasting of the same beer to see how the flavor evolved.

This is a good point.

For beers like Belgian Strong Ale, bottle conditioning is key.

Draft wouldn’t be better for those beers…

by Snark on Jan 18, 2012 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

I disagree

The second fermentation is key, and many of them will do that in kegs as well as bottles. The Delirium series is a good example. The Nocturnum is brilliant on draft, and the Noel made me weep.

I love the Delirium series.

But there are flavors you can get from bottle-conditioned Belgian Strong Ales that are less easily reached even with the secondary fermentation in the keg, right?

But they will also condition them in casks or kegs. I’ve had both, and no complaints from either. The difference to me is in the level of spice.

by bigjosh12000 on Jan 18, 2012 3:41 PM CST up reply actions

Right.

I think the point was not so much that you couldn’t get secondary fermentation in other ways, but that there are, for some beers, specific (and happy) flavor profiles you get from bottle-conditioning, and that draft doesn’t always “beat” that, depending on what you’re looking for.

Bottle aged ones as well give you a flavor you can’t get from a tap. Russian Imperial Stouts can take years to reach their best flavor. Draft beer is better 90% of the time but there are definitely times that it isn’t IMO.

Slightly disappointed with the K total.

From Jeff Wilson:
The 4 p.m. deadline to sign Yu Darvish arrives in two hours, and the Rangers and the agents for the right-hander are closing in on a deal that will span five years with a player option for a sixth year.

Major-league sources confirmed the length of the contract, and another said that the financial terms are more friendly to the Rangers than had been anticipated from the outset of the 30-day process to get the Japanese ace signed.

So it is a cheaper but he gets his five years?

got to be.

its protection for Darvish in case he’s underperforming at end of 5 years. allows him to essentially guarantee himself the extra money. so he can take less in AAV on the 5 years, and at end, he either signs a more luctrative long term deal in free agency, or collects the 6th year option money.

and compare it to what we think will be the arb tender amount 6 years from now.

by RangerMad on Jan 18, 2012 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

theres no incentive for the Rangers to give a $15M player option

If he’s worth $15M at the end of the 5 years, he’d opt out and hit free agency. If he’s not worth it, then he’ll clearly exercise it and the Rangers would be stuck overpaying for him for that final year. kind of why the Player option doesnt make sense from the Rangers side of things.

by 6th street on Jan 18, 2012 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

Yes there is.

The Rangers can reasonably expect to have a larger payroll in 6 years than now thanks to $TV. I’m not advocating for financial shennanigans, but if there were ever a time to backload some money, this would be it.

I know Yu and Wash are skinny, but there’s no way that hot tub has enough room for both of them AND Prince Fielder. Unless it’s one of those massive ski resort hot tubs, in which case it might hold one of those guys plus Prince.

I'm guessing the 6th year is a big vesting option

Much like Beltre’s. Probably $15M with 375 IP in last 2 years of deal.

yeah with Napolis arb demand

And the likelihood that he is seeking huge money in FA I think they could go after Prince and structure it where it’s backloaded enough to not affect things.

Plus they could structure this Yu deal that way also. Maybe give him a signing bonus today but pro-rate that over the course of the 5 year deal for accounting purposes which could open some money up for Prince. John Danks did something similar I believe with his new deal he signed. He’ll end up making 8 mil this season but 7.5 of that is a signing bonus which can be prorated for accounting purposes. His base salary this year is only like 500k

The 4 p.m. deadline to sign Yu Darvish arrives in two hours, and the Rangers and the agents for the right-hander are closing in on a deal that will span five years with a player option for a sixth year.

Major-league sources confirmed the length of the contract, and another said that the financial terms are more friendly to the Rangers than had been anticipated from the outset of the 30-day process to get the Japanese ace signed.

well

i think the player option seems ok if you expect him to out perform the contract and to command more in free agency at the end of it, especially if agreeing to the player option allowed them to get a lower AAV for the first 5 years.

Has to be windy out there. Let them sit in CF or something until you’re ready for them.

that the players were afraid of potential ramifications on their family members back in Cuba that theyd have to leave behind, and that fear was what they relied upon to keep players from defecting.

but their wine guys are much better than most liquor stores, especially at the major one right next to downtown. Most of the people there have been to the wine regions that they are giving advice about, be it South Africa, Argentina or Italy.

Is there a guy (or gal) there who knows their Scotch?

At Binny’s, for example, I know which Scotches I’ve had and enjoyed — but if I want something new, and want to spend a bit more, I always ask for suggestions.

That’s how I wound up with an amazing bottle of Duncan Taylor NC2 13-y.o. Laphraoig — which I’m sad to finish, and need to buy more of.

Totally fair.

But I’m talking more about price points, here. Glenlivet 12 is, what, $30-35 for a 750mLbottle? And Macallan 12 is, what, $40?

But what happens when you push up to the 18…?

well, the Macallan 18 is different

ive only had the pleasure of a couple glasses, but its primo. and youll pay for it.

but with respect to 12 years, my enjoyment of a Glenlivet 12 and Macallan 12 are about the same. not enough differentiation to justify paying the extra $5-10.

but thats just me.

Right. Where I'm coming from, though, is for new Scotch drinkers.

I’d want them to try both the Glenlivet and Macallan 12s, and see what they think - and at the $30$40 price point, they can do that without destroying their liquor budget.

When it comes to the Macallan 18, though — I mean, it’s a great Scotch, but for $130 (or whatever), I can think of a lot of cheaper Scotches I’d recommend someone new-ish try first.

Heck, I don’t buy Macallan 18, because there are so many cheaper Scotches I enjoy as much, if not more.

But his intagibles make the difference on a team like the Royals. His selflessness would be contagious, and get everyone on the same page.

Plus you have a guy who can field at every infield position. $16m per is a hell of a price tag but I can see him being responsible for an extra 20 wins and a shot at the wildcard.

You're eating the wrong mushrooms

I agree that white button mushrooms are useless filler, but many mushrooms are quite delicious. Unfortunately, white buttons are what you get on most pizzas.

Using other mushrooms is kind of dangerous on pizza

Can ruin a flavor profile since they are so strong. Definitely have to go veggie pizza if you are going to do it.

I usually don't put mushrooms on my pizza

Unless you saute them first, they release too much water. Sometimes I’ll saute assorted wild mushrooms in EVOO, garlic and shallots and make a wild mushroom only pizza.

My preferred use is wild mushroom bruschetta
