Darvish deal reportedly done -- 6 years, $60 million

PrintAccording to various reporters on Twitter, the Rangers and Yu Darvish have reached an agreement on a contract, which means Darvish will be in a Ranger uniform for the 2012 season.
Darvish, a 25 year old righthander who has dominated in Japan the past several years, is expected to be part of the Rangers' rotation this coming season, with the Rangers having bid heavily on him in the belief that he can potentially be a legitimate number one starter in the major leagues.
There are no details as to the contract terms, although reports as of late are that it is expected to be a five year deal with a sixth year player option. When contract terms are available, this will be updated.
The Rangers won the bidding for the exclusive rights to Darvish with a bid of $51.7 million, which will now be paid to Darvish's Japanese League team, the Nippon Ham Fighters.
UPDATE -- It is reportedly a 6 year, $60 million deal.

RANGERS AGREE TO TERMS WITH PITCHER YU DARVISH
January 18, 2012 – Yu Darvish has officially joined the Texas Rangers, with the team and the right-hander agreeing to contract terms earlier today. The Rangers reportedly bid $51.7 million to have exclusive negotiating rights with Darvish when he was posted by the Nippon Ham Fighters after the conclusion of the 2011 season.
The 6-foot-6, 185-pound hurler posted a 76-28 record and miniscule 1.72 ERA over five seasons for the Ham Fighters in Japan, during which 126 of his 128 appearances came as a starter. Darvish fanned 1,083 over 1,024 1/3 innings, while walking 221 and giving up just 691 hits. The 25-year-old worked at least 200 innings in four of his five seasons.

not very related to the life of the asset (e.g., 5 or 10 years depending on the type of asset), these days, but I’d have to check.
But you wouldn't add a 6th year for that,
if it actually does affect when you could deduct, it would be optimal to deduct is ASAP over 5 years, rather than 6.

Assuming the choice was 5 yrs or 6 with an opt out with a relatively similar AAV and the potential to spread out your posting fee over six years (have to verify tax or maybe MLB implications) vs. five, there could be a potential benefit there.
You are saying, I guess, that the only way he’d agree to not opt out is if he isn’t performing, which could be true. We also don’t know if it’s an evenly split contract or if it’s front of back loaded do we? I didn’t see above but I missed a lot…

The only way I see it being worth it
is if we countered an offer by Yu’s team of 5/56 with 6/56 and an opt out.
Basically, that would give us some insurance in case he’s a 1 WAR pitcher, and Yu gets close to the same result as his 5 year deal, as far as he’s concerned.
Also, I’m more confident they won’t post a loss in that year, because they’ll be making $150M in television revenue.
It's not the same to him, though.
That’s almost $2M/yr AAV and $10MM less over 5 years. Big difference.

so I’m curious if they are speaking purely in terms of deferred (post-contract) money or if back-loaded is included.
If they feel like they have an excess of cash flow in any particular year, then it makes the most sense to load it into that range more than anything.
