Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

This Day in LSB History

ST LOUIS, MO - OCTOBER 27: Colby Lewis #48 of the Texas Rangers stands on the field during Game Six of the MLB World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium on October 27, 2011 in St Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Two years ago today, the Rangers officially announced the signing of Colby Lewis to a two year deal with an option year, and I contemplated whether Lewis would be able to adequately replace Kevin Millwood in the 2010 Rangers.

Let's play "Guess The Commenter"!
Make no mistake, no matter how Lewis does in 2010, this (and the entire off-season has been) is a JD deal all the way.

JD loves pick up a player or pitcher and then require them to do something they either didn’t do last year or has never done in their career.

Colby Lewis turns 31 this season, has been in 5 different major league organizations and has a career 6.45 ERA in 217 IPs in The Show.

Yet, he’s been given nearly $ 6 million and a spot in our rotation by JD.

This should end well.

fun to look back
…think instead something in the Millwood or Scott Feldman ballpark, 5-6 K/9 and a 2:1 K/BB ratio, instead. But with the defense the Rangers will be running out there, that should be good enough for an ERA in the mid- to high-4 range, and if you can get 170-180 innings of that, then you’ve got a bargain, given the contract Lewis is getting.

I very much appreciate all the kind words.

Without a job that keeps me in front of a computer, I just have less online time in me these days, and something had to go. With the tremendous success and growth of the LSB community, routine 1000 comment posts just requires more online time investment than I have.

Plus, these days, is there really much to say, other than, “if JD did it, it’s probably the right thing”? As a longtime Ranger fan, I can’t remember ever thinking to myself, “if I disagree with the Rangers move, it probably means I’m wrong”.

These days I’m spending time watching a dozen nephews and nieces kick ass and get ready to take over. I went to the High School Football State Championships to see Lake Travis kick ass and take names for the fifth time in a row, and I saw their weightlifting facilities that an NFL team could work out at and not miss anything. Saw another nephew run cross country, and helped a niece with a trebuchet for a physics class. Also getting back in shape after decades of expense account meals and a lot of desk sitting.

At any rate, hope everyone is healthy and happy and enjoying life! I can’t guarantee I’ll read all the replies, but if anyone needs to get in touch with me, @dj_cahill works on twitter. I may or may not go to a LSB thingie at RBiA, depending on schedule and travel. Take care!

Skepticism
Colby Lewis seems like somebody who should be considered AAA depth and nobody that you’d be giving $ 6 million and the ball every 5 days.

If he was really good, more teams would have been after him and he would have been a helluva lot more expensive. That is, unless the Rangers Pacific Rim Job knows more than everybody else.

I’m not a fan of Brandon McCarthy at all but he’s a better pitcher than Lewis. I’d rather see Harrison, Holland or CJ being given a chance to start than watching a 31 year old Cobra Lewis throw down a 6.00 ERA while killing our bully every 5 days.

Apparently ZiPS projected Colby to do very well… which in turn makes you excited about it’s predictions for Darvish.

Thanks

I could have swore that on twitter he projected 169 IP for the last year. I wonder if he meant that as the projection for the first year for the pessimistic. Because otherwise, I don’t see how 169 IP gets you to 4.3 WAR.

But bringing it back to Cameron, that is a very Derek Lowe like 5 years.

TBiA is a really good hitters’ park – a 3.46 ERA, over 169 innings, is about 43 runs above replacement (5.74, which is I believe the highest in baseball – lots of teams are in the 4s).

Carmona had a fake birthday of 12/7/83

Looking at 83 and 84 birthdays, there are about 50. Of those, here are some interesting names:

Joaquin Arias – not really a big name
Ubaldo Jiminez
Hanley Ramirez
Jose Reyes
Edinson Volquez – though I don’t think he’d care about the “n” so much in his fake name

But my dark horse is Robinson Cano (’82 birthday)

if not one guy, then same service or something. And same birth year as a proxy for when they left the island. Not everybody leaves when they are the same age but I imagine that if the other names are linked, it is because they all got their fake papers at the same time.

I also forgot to mention Melky Cabrera. Not a huge name but an 83 birthday and he has the same place of birth, Santo Domingo, as Carmona.

Byrd has lost 40 pounds this offseason.

Byrd, 34, has added a martial arts workout called Muay Thai (pronounced “moy tie”) to his offseason program. The intense sessions, which he does three to four times a week, plus a dramatic change in his diet has helped the Cubs center fielder go from 255 pounds, which he weighed at the end of last season, to 215 now. That’s the same weight he was his senior year in high school.

on Fielder: “Hes short and fat”.

Damn right

Me and Prince Fielder are pretty much the same. Except he’s black, and can actually hit a baseball. But we are about the same height and weight.

"Those cocksuckers asking me if I thought we were gonna go up there and try to work his fuckin’ pitch count ‘cause he’s on three fuckin’ days rest…you know what I told those cocksuckers? He pitch ball, ball cross plate, we gonna knock the shit out of it."
