Monday Morning Rangers Update

Bud Selig waiting for some stuff to happen

So, a Monday after a holiday weekend where a Carlos Quentin trade was the most noteworthy baseball transaction and the Dallas Cowboys lost horribly in an attempt to win the NFC East? Yeah. Is there any wonder why there's nothing related to the Rangers out there this morning?

You know the drill.

I dunno, doesn't feel right to me

They’re estimated at 78 million in payroll without Prince, up from 54 last year. Adding Prince, absent some hellacious backloading (and Werth jumps from 13M in ‘12 to 16M in ’13, 20M in ’14, and LOLMILLIONZ thereafter, when Strasburg hits arb; so I don’t see how they could do that either) would double their payroll in one year.

I mean, Marlins tried to do it, but, still.

I had a dream the Rangers signed Prince last night

I found out from someone’s post on facebook. Might have been Futurepants. I then went to LSB to check the details but nothing there. Woke up while searching the internet for confirmation.

Football can go to hell. The Rangers aren't ready for football season and neither am I.

Mavs win the Ship

Rangers go to Series again
Stars get sold and are a pretty good squad
The Cowboys mired in mediocrity

All things considered, I’ll take that.

Hard to say...

many Boras clients hold out late and end up getting that big deal. Like Beltre did last year.

All it takes is that one team, like the Nats did with Werth, to offer a big deal. It doesn’t look like it’s there right now though. And if that team is there, I think they feel like they would be bidding against themselves by offering him a huge deal at this point.

I'm ready for ranking stories and posts to be over.

The object of desire for me, besides ST, is Soler, and, in that vein, I’ve seen the first mock draft for next year. It has the Rangers taking this guy:

29. Rangers: Jake Cosart, 6’-1", RHP, Clear Creek HS (TX)
At 6’-1" and 150 lbs, the velocity he generates from his frame is incredible. He hit 99 mph on the radar gun at the National Power Showcase and has seen his stock soar ever since. Also shows a curveball that should be devastating in the future. Still raw, but the Rangers are stockpiled with pitchers, so they can wait on him to mature and develop. Comes from good bloodlines as his brother, Jarred Cosart, is a top pitching prospect for the Astros.

Another one that I can’t find right now has a better prospect falling to the Rangers due to sign ability as he has an Auburn commit:

Addison Russell, 6’-1", SS, Pace HS (GA)
Russell has a fluidity to his game that makes everything look easy. He has the hands, speed and footwork to compete for Gold Gloves down the line. His arm is a rocket, and even though he has a funky throwing motion, it works for him. At the plate, his short compact swing generates gap-to-gap power and he should be a high-average hitter because of his plate discipline.

Its really hard to tell how the draft is going to shake out given the new rules

Why would we grab a guy late in the round who has a hard commit to college when we cant moneywhip him? And if we dont sign him we cant use that money elsewhere.

Of course I also think these guys are going to have to realize they dont really have much leverage and its not like they can extract too much extra out of a team over where they were slotted at and the risk/reward of going to college for 3 years isn’t as worth it anymore.

Rangers: Number 3 Overall Team

is that you don’t get noticed by saying that the Phillies are the #1 team, or Boston, or the consecutive AL champs. I think they'd prefer 6 years.

Given how aggressive they’ve been to get him, their scouts are probably very confident in his success and he’s only 25.

Getting an extra year of a stud in his prime for only probably $10-12M more is definitely in the Rangers favor.

I think the Darvish camp will trade dollars for that year to keep it at 5 years and get him to FA sooner.

I’m sure the FO evaluates everything individually. The Yu situation isn’t normal but neither were the CJ Wilson or Cliff Lee situations, especially for Texas. They are all unique.

Right now the precedent has been set that they prefer to not offer a 6th year to pitchers. Yu’s age doesn’t change anything other than my own perception of the situation. Until I see or hear differently I don’t see how anything can change.

How does that make it extremely unlikely that they’ll go to 6 years on a 25 year old Darvish who they liked so much they are willing to pay $51.7M up front just to get him?

But considering they were extremely reluctant to go 6 years on Cliff Lee, a proven #1, and given their public stance I see it as extremely unlikely that they offer any pitcher 6 years going forward. It is possible but I don’t see it as likely.

And furthermore I don’t see how you can possibly know it is anything more than extremely unlikely or even simply unlikely. Neither of us have inside information. And your position on the issue isn’t backed up by anything but assumption.

If Yu was exclusively JD's baby

and Nolan didn’t approve, then he’s a terrible boss who can’t stand up to his subordinates. Good managing means giving your employees some leeway, it rarely means letting your employees spend 20% of your budget on something you disapprove of.

Not really.

I mean… it’s easy to speculate… but sometimes these things are innocuous.

Even if Nolan completely didn’t want to… he knows the game well enough to not let that get public. At least not before things went south.

I do understand how it “feels” like the silence is meaningful… but I’m hesitant to actually give it meaning. I’d rather just hear what Nolan says, which I can almost guarantee will be supportive of the deal.

I figured it was akin to the auction

where Simpson (or maybe it was Davis, I can’t remember which now) asked “how much wins this thing? Let’s do it.”

They probably had that same discussion, and I somehow doubt Nolan just sat in the corner thinking “I’ll give that little shit enough rope to hang himself on this one” as some poster here seems to want to imply.

I'm sure Nolan isn't the only one

worried about money and years

I’m sure the GM, President, and ownership all had a fairly good idea what the parameters of a deal would be before the bid was submitted.

I’m sure they all recognize the risk. And I’m also sure they all came to a decision together to take the risk.

by WyoRanger on Jan 2, 2012 1:23 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I think Nolan didn't want to do it solely because of the money involved and uncertainty but Simpson Davis

told him they didn’t mind taking the gamble, especially after the Angels grabbed CJ and Pujols…so JD got his way on this one.

There’s simply no fucking way that Nolan Ryan would go with this kind of gamble without the owners saying they want to do it.

No track record of success in The Show, the history of Japanese pitchers over here, the years involved, the investment…there’s just no way.

I thought this initially but his silence on this convinces me more and more.

by Josey Wales on Jan 2, 2012 12:34 PM CST up reply actions

well

clearly the amount of money means that this level of decision has to be presented to the owners.

But my guess is that the only time JD or Nolan go to the owners is when they’re unified. This doesn’t seem the type of ownership group who is going to respond well to mixed signals.

So yeah, Nolan may well have thought it was a lot of money (it is) and a gamble (it is). But at the same time, if he was as against it as you’re suggesting, he wouldn’t have let it happened.

This was a collective decision made by the organization.

Nolan and JD aren’t going to make a winning bid over $50 million if they don’t agree that Yu has some tremendous big league potential. Likely they knew what kind of salary might be needed in addtion. Take that with a not-so-serious offer to BGL, and it looks like Yu has been in their plans all along. This is not a JD vs. Nolan situation in my opinion.

by Philar on Jan 2, 2012 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think it is either...I think Nolan's

major objection was solely about the investment involved but not with Darvish’s talent.

When Simpson Davis said they had no problem with the money, Ryan gave the greenlight.

Make no mistake, this is still JD’s Baby. He’s the one that went over to Japan and made sure his scouts went to every start he made this past year.

Because that bid is a pretty good statement about the organization’s belief in Darvish, right?
