Rangers sign Brad Hawpe to minor league deal

According to folks on Twitter, the Rangers have signed outfielder Brad Hawpe to a minor league contract with a major league invite to spring training.

Hawpe was born in Fort Worth and graduated from Saginaw Boswell high school, going on to play ball at LSU before being drafted in the 11th round of the 2000 draft by the Colorado Rockies.

Hawpe was a member of the Rockies organization until August, 2010, when he was released, and thereafter signed by the Tampa Bay Rays. Hawpe joined the Padres for the 2011 season.

Hawpe had a very good four year run from 2006-2009, during which time he posted a .288/.384/.518 line, good for a 124 OPS+, even in Colorado. His OPS dropped to 758 in 2010, however, and dropped further to 645 with San Diego in 2011.

A lefty hitter, Hawpe has spent most of his career playing right field, but has played some first base the past couple of seasons. The Rangers supposedly were interested in Hawpe in part to provide depth and insurance at first base if Mitch Moreland struggled returning from his wrist surgery.

I'll just leave this here:
But Texas’ concern about Fielder never was just about Darvish money, or even the extension they hope to work out with Josh Hamilton. The club is risk-averse to paying huge sums of money to too many players as they age through their mid-30s, particularly after contracts for Jayson Werth, Joe Mauer, Carl Crawford and others look like bad deals at the start, not even the finish. Texas already is paying Adrian Beltre at least through age 36 and might be doing the same with Hamilton, 31 in May, who is in line for a Ryan Braun-sized five-year, $100 million extension.

Not that different from what I suggested.

Mine had $59 for the first 3 years and $75 for the last three. He didn’t have the club opt out and I only put that because Galloway mentioned it (which makes me thinks someone in the FO may have commented on it to him)

This answers a question I had when talking to ab03...
Prince Fielder still doesn’t have a team, but already he is almost assuredly about to set a record this year. No free agent ever has signed a nine-figure contract this late in the offseason.

Jesus fucking Christ LSJ… you’re not this stupid.

I would be disappointed if the Rangers weren’t able to try and do multiple things and build contingencies… for Moreland not being healthy or anything else.

I don’t think the Rangers expect to sign Prince… they’ll only do it if Prince works extra hard to come to their price.

That doesn’t mean they will stop doing business while waiting on their hands for magic fucking unicorns to deliver Prince to them.

It also doesn’t mean they have ruled Prince out.

Since when has a fucking minor league contract and ST invite had ANYTHING to do with a 9 figure free agent deal?

I finally understand their lack of money.

Rumor was they wanted to get under $189M for 2014.

Watching Clubhouse Confidential they were talking about it and showed the tiered percentages over the luxury tax threshold teams have to pay. The longer you stay over the threshold the higher it gets. The Yankees are paying an extra 50% for every dollar over $178M now. So like $15M per year just in tax.

If they can get under the threshold for just one year, it resets down to 17.5%.

If they really want to do that… they can’t sign a guy like Prince.

Of course they can always change their mind and shouldn’t be completely ruled out… but given how much they’ve complained about paying the tax and the other statements… I actually believe they do want to get under by 2014 just to get that percentage down for a while.

AA really likes to spend money in the draft/int. FA's...

Big FA signing doesn’t really mesh with AA (part of it probably has to do with them not really being on same level talent wise at the major leagues with the Yankees and the Red Sox) and the Rogers ownership group.

by coolaid on Jan 20, 2012 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Initially, I did think they put in a competitive bid for Yu but...

after seeing how they haven’t really been on Fielder or any other big FA after the bidding, I’m really skeptical about their bid and their willingness to spend money.

by coolaid on Jan 20, 2012 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

My theory...

I think they are handcuffed by ownership but their FO is giving the illusion that they are in on all these big name FA (the media probably has a lot to do with this) so as not to alienate their fan base.

Increased ticket and merchandise sales aren’t enough to cover the increasing amount of money the Rangers are spending. We know a lot of this money is coming out of the owners’ funds, which means the team is operating on a deficit. I don’t really see this news as anything shocking.
