Remember when the NBA season started

and people were talking about Knicks/Celtics as a potential first round matchup and two forces to be reckoned with in the East?

That was fun.

RT @FisolaNYDN: The Denver Nuggets, including the playoffs, are 30-16 since the Carmelo trade. The Knicks, including playoffs, are 20-26.

Knight is the tallest midget among DET PGs.

Too many turnovers, too low of a FG%.

Knight’s not a bad player… but he’s nowhere near as valuable as Monroe.

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 2:38 PM CST up reply actions

Knight has the starting gig locked up and will only improve

George is a very valuable piece that will help in nearly every category. Ibaka is a top shot blocker and if Brooks finally decides to play him 30+ could easily average a double/double.

by sprite on Jan 21, 2012 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

Yup.

He’s probably the third best player in the deal.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

What do the spreadsheets say?

I agree that Monroe is the best player in the deal but I bet the numbers are closer post-trade than they first appear.

by sprite on Jan 21, 2012 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

I have in terms of ranking

Monroe: 16th
George: 91st
Ibaka: 98th
Young: 113th
Knight: 144th

Knight will obviously climb that… but even going forward I don’t expect him to be much more than a top 80 player at best.

The production divide from Monroe to everyone else is massive.

I did overrate Young… but Young is roughly the same value as George and Ibaka.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 3:35 PM CST up reply actions

I expect Ibaka to improve, though

Same with Knight . I’m also a big Paul George fan. It hurt me to let Monroe go, but he’s playing waaaay above where I thought he would.
I understand there may have been technically better offers out there, but Sprite happened to have guys who matched up with my sexiness scale.

That's fine.

I know he’s more valuable.

5th in REB, 2nd in OREB… decent FG. Doesn’t commit many TO or get to the line often so he doesn’t drag those stats down. Blocks are mediocre but above average. Steals a bit better.

I don’t know why Yahoo ranks him the way they do… but he’s absolutely more valuable than Terry.

Using even weights for all 10 categories I have Bob as 38th in the league and Terry 104th.

by Brad on Jan 25, 2012 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

But he's elite in those two categories.

And doesn’t kill you in any other category.

So many big men have horrible FT% and are turnover machines… they get to the line a lot and the weighted average of all their misses takes down the rate stats.

He scores just enough to just be slightly below average. He’s averaged 1.4 steals per game this year which is quite nice. 0.8 blocks isn’t great… but it’s above average.

FT% and 3PT are his worst category and they aren’t that bad. Those are also easy remedy.

Terry scores right at average for all the players in the league (14 pts is average for every player on all 12 fantasy teams). He’s a top 12 guy in 3’s… but that’s the only thing he does well. Everything else is barely above average in things like FT% (because he doesn’t get to the line enough to affect the weighted average) and A/TO.

And Terry is a terrible rebounder even for a guard.

I’ll take my rankings.

If I wait until halfway through the season, Tyler's potentially out of the market.

If I do this now, I maximize the value I get from Howard (and others) while there are still games left to be played. That, plus current mid-table teams like Tyler’s are still in play, probably netting me a better pick. I’m not smart enough about this shit to be creative enough to win this year (LOOK AT MY MOVES), so I’ll restock for next year and actually learn a little bit about FBB.

“I look at guys and they don’t look like they want to play,” Howard said following Orlando’s surprisingly lopsided 93-67 loss to a New Orleans Hornets team that came into Friday night’s meeting on a nine-game skid.

“I told them at halftime, `If you don’t want to play, just stay in the locker room, because it don’t make sense for a team who we should beat to just demolish us.”

by sprite on Jan 28, 2012 12:17 AM CST up reply actions

yeah

I don’t have a problem with him saying that to his teammates, but to say it publicly fixes nothing.

Makes me feel a little weird to betray my usual “chemistry is overrated” analytical stance in saying this, but a big part of me would much rather have Deron, even with the obvious drop off in numbers. That being if I had to choose.

by Alan Smithee on Jan 28, 2012 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

I think a case can be made

that in the short term, when looking at this roster, Deron makes more sense if you’re choosing between the two.

But when you start to factor in life after Dirk, or at least life after franchise carrying Dirk, I’ll still take Dwight.

Well, you already gave a "meh" when I recommended the board I frequent. :)

Other than Dallas-Mavs.com, and the threads on this site, I mainly use Twitter.

well

I think I’ll mosey on over there as this “NBA” thread is just a fantasy league circle jerk.

by Goyogringo on Jan 28, 2012 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah.

If people here wanted to have a fantasy BBall thread and a separate NBA thread, I wouldn’t complain.

But I can deal with it.

I agree with you

And if Howard became a Mav, I’d probably quickly learn to get over it.

appy polly loggies to Roddy

He looks (superlargenumber) times better now than he did a few weeks ago. I jumped the gun on the Dojo over Roddy talk. My bad.

Pretty cool win last night, getting great games from Roddy, Haywood, and Odom. Also usual quality from Marion and Jet.

The recent use of Yi over Wright confuses me a little. Is it just so they can run some of the same pick and pop plays they would with Dirk?

by Alan Smithee on Jan 28, 2012 12:04 PM CST reply actions

Carlisle

He said last night during his press conference that it’s kind of a coin flip when deciding between those two. Depends on match ups, etc.

Yi definitely better fits the mold of a Mavs PF, though.

Last night it probably had something to do with all of the big bodies the Jazz have in the front court. Yi is actually a pretty stout guy, and Wright….is not.

yi

He “fits the mold” in the sense that he has more in common with Dirk than Wright does, but I don’t think he’s the better player.

I like the floor spacing and his size, but I think Wright’s athleticism and activity can change games. Like Roddy and Ian before him, I think he just needs time. Yi I was never terribly impressed with. He’s unique, but I don’t think he’s much more than an extra body who will occasionally hit a jumpshot. And I think he’s three years older than he’s listed.

I've been having this same discussion off and on all day on another board.

The bottom line for me is that I don’t think either one of them has done enough in the NBA to justify being too upset either way. They’re the same age (officially) and have their own particular skill sets. Neither of them has ever been around a coaching staff like the Mavs.

I do think the Mavs view Yi as a better fit at PF and, due to significantly more court time, they might view him as more likely to add to a real rotation at some point this season.

But I do get excited any time Wright is in the game.

by jthig32 on Jan 28, 2012 2:52 PM CST up reply actions

come playoff time it's unlikely to matter

Carlisle would never play Wright in the playoffs unless it was a blowout or emergency situation, anyway, and hopefully the team will be healthy enough soon that playing Yi 18 minutes a night like they have lately will be unthinkable.

Still, I think Wright is a player. His understanding of team defense is well behind the rest his game right now, but consistent minutes(and some extra weight room sessions) could eventually make him, at worst, a super sub off the bench, I think. I also think the only reason he isn’t in that role for somebody right now instead of relegated to victory cigar duty in Dallas is his injury record. 1500+ career minutes with an 18.3 PER; at some point, this can’t be just an accident, right?

by Alan Smithee on Jan 28, 2012 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

Yep

I agree with pretty much everything you said there.

I have enough faith in Carlisle that I just assume that behind the scenes, Yi has been getting things right a little more often than Wright and yeah, he may be a better fit.

I’d like to see Wright get more minutes as a third center though.

I'm a little surprised.

He put up 17 and 10 and then got benched.

And of course Tyrus immediately began playing his best ball.

I'd rather my team just not die.

If I can get some health I’ll be fine.

Nobody watching this Mavs game?

I like Delonte West. I don’t care who knows it.
