Saturday morning Rangers things

This morning? The Yu...its all about the Yu...

The Yu Darvish press conference was yesterday.

Anthony Andro has a story on the press conference.

T.R. Sullivan has a story on the press conference.

Jeff Wilson has a story on the press conference.

Richard Durrett has a story on the press conference.

Gil Lebreton has a column on the press conference.

T.R. Sullivan writes that the Rangers are expecting Darvish to fit in in the clubhouse.

Evan Grant has a piece on Darvish behind the paywall.

Gerry Fraley, behind the paywall, calls Yu Darvish "an expensive No. 3 starting pitcher" and says that the A.L. West will come down to C.J. Wilson v. Darvish.

Sullivan has a story about the Rangers' scouting and recruitment of Darvish.

Drew Davison has a story on the Rangers' options for the starting rotation.

Bob Simpson says the Rangers can't afford Prince Fielder at Fielder's current asking price, and also says he'd rather re-sign Josh Hamilton than sign Fielder.

Barry Horn has a Q&A with Chuck Morgan, talking about what he did before joining the Rangers and his appearance on the MLB Network's new quiz show.

Wilson has a story on the signing of Brad Hawpe to a minor league contract. Hawpe, who will likely start the season at AAA, provides some additional depth at first base and the corner outfield spots.

5.5M isn't all that expensive for a #3. :)

I wonder what talent evaluator Fraley decided to pull his #3 label from?

I don't think it's evaluative

I would hope not, at least. But most people project Darvsh to start the season as the Rangers’ #3, with Colby going in game 1 and Holland or Harrison in game 2.

He must be replying to the Boras implication that Boras can be successful working directly with the owners on fielder

I like to hear that the baseball people make presentations to ownership for significant financial commitments, such as with yu. In other words, the baseball people have to justify the reasons for the significant commitment, and ownership supports it. Texas is in an ideal situation now.
I also like it when Bob uses “we” – that means it is a group decision.

Making adjustments
The ballpark itself – the dimensions. When I was here in January, I was on the mound and I looked over the right-center wall and it seemed a little bit closer. I was asking my GM (Daniels) if they could back that up a little bit. I don’t know where they are with that.

That cracked me up!

CJ is not a number 3. Fraley called him that because he hated Wilson.

CJ put up a 2.31 road ERA last year in 121 IPs (2.50 ERA the last two years in 210 Ips)..

Danny Haren put up a road 3.75 ERA in 127 IPs.
Jered Weaver put up a road 2.93 ERA in 123 IPs.

Felix Hernandez? He put up a road 3.28 ERA in 123 IPs.
Justin Verlander? He put up a road 2.43 ERA in 133 IPs.

CJ is somewhere between a 1 or a 2 but is also improving with age. He is going to absolutely kick ass in Cali this year and is a dark horse Cy Young candidate.

He's had 15 innings in "The Show"

What about Matt Moore makes him more likely to adjust to the league adjusting to him than Darvish?

Darvish is hyper competitive who basically does nothing but work out and focus on baseball. He’s started using ML style balls in his training even before he posted and changed his routine to every 6 days instead of every 7 days like other Japanese pitchers.

He is more focused on succeeding than you seem to grasp. He has that Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan level of ultra insane competitiveness.

Every player has to adjust… other than being from Japan… you’ve provided no reason that Darvish can’t adjust like every other pitcher who comes up.

Nice shoehorn...nothing about Beltre going 0 for 12 in Detroit or sucking the life out of the offense in Game 7 of the World Series?

It has nothing to do with Darvish being Japanese and everything to do with him having success in that particular league (the pitchers that come from that league happen to be Japanese).

He’s never been lit up for a sustained period in his life and that’s going to happen this year. He’s going to have to conquer dealing with failure.

He’s also having to do it while pitching half his games in a very tough ballpark against the very best hitters in the world.

Like I said, I expect early success and then a string of failure.

The key to him becoming a very good to great pitcher is how deals with that failure and how he deals with pitching in Arlington.

But that’s because of June and August birthdays.

Moore is 34 months younger than Darvish.

Moore has 6 years in the minors compared to 7 years in the NPB for Darvish.

But Moore is at the very end of the cutoff and Darvish the very beginning.

Matt Moore has spent almost as much time dominating non ML players as Darvish has.

Age was the wrong mention… I should have just mentioned the 6 years Moore has spent in the minors.

And fortunately he obsessed with success. All that guy does is work and study and focus on baseball.

It's entirely possible that Moore will be better

But it’s not definite simply because Moore has pitched 20 innings in the ML or in America before.

Josey will never like this move until after it has proven itself. To do so would be to give our scouting operation and baseball decision-makers not named Nolan credit.

C.J. has walked more on the road than at home the past two years as a starter.

2010: 12.8% on the road, 9.5% at home
2011: 9.0% on the road, 7.1% at home

His road ERA is helped greatly by very low road BABIP.

Eh.

It’s not really known. The general rule of thumb is that BABIP is mostly luck… but a good defense behind you can help… and there is some thought that pitchers have SOME control over it when you see certain pitchers consistently having a lower BABIP every year.

In this case… I think the low aspect is a bit of noise.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

CJ also induces a ton of weak contact (which is why he survived his walk rate) so BABIP gets

His BABIP flucuates like everyone elses.

His career is .287… his road career is .290.

Last year it was .277 on the road, the year before .250. That’s a big part of why the ERA is lower.

If he can somehow keep his walk rates well below career average and control his BABIP in some way… he can continue having that kind of ERA probably.

That is very unlikely.

Now, for sure on the local scene, just come up with something stupid, and try to connect the dots. I’m sure there are economic reasons driving this, but it sure does suck.

PF had the misfortune to hit the free agent market the same year as Puols at a position that is stocked by the Red Sox and Yanks. A very short term deal that allows him to hit the market in a different dynamic makes all the sense in the world but Boras and the players assoc would have a melt down about him signing a short term deal.

My favorite comment from the press conference.

When asked a dumb butt question about if he could’ve gotten the last strike in Game 6:

“If it was last year, I would have given up a home run and lost the game,” Darvish said. “This year I won’t let that happen.”

Made light of a ridiculously dumb question while not throwing a team mate under the bus and exhibiting both self deprecation and resolve to get better. Amazing response. Especially for a 25-yo rock star sports superstar.

No depth

If one or two of their big four go down, as pitchers are oft to do, they are in trouble.

Rangers have 3 or 4 internal replacements if that happens.

He's put up terrible years before

2007: 85 OPS+ / 82 wRC+
2009: 87 OPS+ / 86 wRC+
2011: 83 OPS+ / 77 wRC+

Outside of the remote possibility that he simply can’t plan in odd numbered years, he’s got a pretty good chance at being really terrible.

If you just look at his road numbers over the past 3 years.

His wRC+ is 98… so it’s not just Rogers Centre inflating it.

77 is a giant drop just like Napoli’s 2011 was a giant spike.

Looking at his last 3 years

includes his 2010. Now maybe you’re saying that we can’t just not include that, but that looks like the outlier of the group to me. And that season, he had a huge home/road split hitting with a 163 wRC+ at home and an 87 wRC+ on the road. Add in another year to his age, and its just tough for me to see his regression point being as high as a 90 wRC+

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 11:14 AM CST up reply actions

This isn't simply cherry picking or bias, its looking at more than just the overall production.

He’s had one season where he hasn’t been terribly below average in the past 3 years. He’s now 33 years old hitting in a pitcher friendly ballpark for half his games. The ballpark is adjusted for, but its not perfect as there can be other side-effects for a power hitter playing half his games in a park that suppresses power numbers. Furthermore, as we’ve seen some studies recently with the Prince Fielder saga, power is what goes first for a hitter and it doesn’t look like Wells is capable of adjusting as a hitter to make up for that.

These are reasons why I don’t place a lot of value in simply looking at an overall 3 year average of his playing time especially when one of those years is greatly different from the other 2. You can’t simply regress to the mean for a player on the wrong side of 30 and getting older. That’s how the Dodgers got stuck paying Andruw Jones 30 million dollars. Adam Dunn over the past 3 seasons has a 118 OPS+, should I expect him to be able to hit anything close to that next season?

No, you adjusted it down a bit

but it would still be his 2nd best season in the past 4 seasons despite being 33 years old. And I see no reason to expect him to do much better than he did last season, while I do see the a large possibility of him matching last year or doing worse.

Of 99, 94 and 121…

Your argument is akin to Josey saying Beltre can’t hit on the road.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

huh?

Wells had 36 PAs in May with a 99 wRC+ and a June that was no doubt good at 121. I don’t consider an 84 wRC+, 73 wRC+, and a 94 wRC+ as signs that a truly terrible April is skewing the numbers into making him look much worse than he is.

This is nothing at all like Josey saying Beltre can’t hit on the road when Beltre’s entire career showed he can. This is me saying that a 33 year old player who has been terrible for 2 of the past 3 seasons will be terrible for a 3rd season in 4 years. No small part of that is the fact that his one good season in that time frame was fueled by being able to hit well at Rogers Centre.

Aren't you the person ripping the shit out of Michael Young's post-season?

If you’re into parsing…and you obviously are if you think Beltre hit well on the road last year…Young had a .321 OPS in the ALDS, a .740 OPS in the ALCS and a .794 OPS in the World Series (along with the game-winning RBI in Game 2).

Young got killed by the Tampa series but hit fairly well (especially in big situations) after that.

Young was 14 for 55 (.250 ish) with 7 doubles and 2 HRs (slugged close to .500) after the ALDS yet you continue to say he sucked in the post-season.

I’m also not the type of guy that says cliches like “The Show” and “On the Biggest Stage”.

You like who you like for your reasons and find stats that make you feel better about it.

Gdawg… you’re doing the same thing. You as a human are not as good at regressing outlier data as the ZiPS system is.

Bet against it if you want… you’ll be wrong more often than you’re right.

You (and me) certainly were when it came to predicting the Rangers slash lines against it last year.

He had a bad post season.

What would be silly is to say he can’t hit in the post season because of it.

The bad post season did happen… but I don’t think it means he can’t perform in the post season. I’ve never said that.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 3:19 PM CST up reply actions

Young started 3 for 27 (remember all the high-fives given out by Pillsbury?) but then went 11 for his last 28.

Young’s numbers were horrific the first 7 games of post-season but then he heated up and went 11 for 28 the rest of the way (4 for 12 in Games 5,6,7 of World Series).

Within that 11 for 28 were huge hits in Games 4 & 5 and then he put the team on his back in Game 6.

He had a game-winning sac fly in Game 2 of the World Series (much to the chagrin of Joe Poz), got the rally started with a gapper in Game 5 and also had RBI hits in Games 6 & 7.

So what you're telling me then

is that my opinion of Wells is nullified because a projection system says otherwise.

If you want to tell me why I’m wrong to think that Wells isn’t going to be a 90+ wRC+ player, go for it. I have my reasons why I believe that, but if you want to discuss why you think I’m wrong then feel free to.

But I’m not going to change my mind because you keep saying that Wells must regress to the mean and that ZIPS says he’ll be a 95 OPS+ guy. Regression to the mean doesn’t automatically mean that a player who is terrible will be a lot less terrible.

In a perfect system, you can regress the outliers. But you’re making the assumption that Vernon Wells’ season last year needs to be regressed in a group of seasons that includes his 2010.

This is an assumption I don’t think you can make at his age in his current environment.

A List

Here are the pitchers that I would give 6 years and $110M guaranteed if I could get them.

Roy Halliday (old, but he’d probably be worth it)
Cliff Lee
Clayton Kershaw
Justin Verlander
Felix Hernandez
CC Sabathia
Jered Weaver
Tim Lincecum
Jon Lester
Zack Greinke
David Price
Cole Hamels
Madison Bumgardner
Mat Latos
Matt Moore
Stephen Strausberg

By Josey logic… they must all be in the top five for the next 6 years to be worth that.

CJ also doesn't have very many comparable pitchers to be compared to

Few expected him to make the jump he did last year. No one knows how well he will age. If Bumgarner turns into Felix then yes, he will be worth it, but young pitchers are often very volatile in their development.

by dumdum000333 on Jan 21, 2012 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

Of course this is stupid because we are discussing MLB

Where young players are under cost controlled team control for at least their first 6 years and they are not given outrageous contracts to live up to.

by dumdum000333 on Jan 21, 2012 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

It's not stupid...

It highlights why you can’t compare Darvish to free agent contracts. It’s rare to have an opportunity to just spend money and get a player so young and talented.

Someone like Yu would typically have 6 years to adjust in the ML before getting that contract

I can understand why JW would be wary of it. You see the Lesters and Moores getting 30 million guaranteed for the 6 years. Yu gets 110.

by Brad on Jan 21, 2012 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

I don't doubt that

But scouting alone are not a guarantee a player will pan out in a new league. This is why players performing well in Low A are not given major league contracts

by dumdum000333 on Jan 21, 2012 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

That has nothing to do with why players in Low A aren't given ML contracts.

The mechanics of the system allow teams the leverage to not NEED to do that.

Contracts and actual compensation is a measure of leverage and expected future performance.

Minor league players have zero leverage.

It’s why Latin kids get more bonus money than most first round draft choices.

Leverage.

Well, in the context of this discussion, absolutely nothing.

But, then, that shouldn’t surprise anyone.

yeah..they have several young guys that are trending up

the major argument against them is Abreu and Wells..If Morales comes back paired with Pujols, Kendrick, Hunter, and that catcher upgrade..and I like Trout and Bourjos

by capps1 on Jan 21, 2012 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

I would bet money

Morales never plays another game in an Angels uniform.

Hunter is not good, and Kendrick isn’t as good as hew as last year.

Trout looming

Makes them scary – no doubt
There’s just so much for him to make up for on that roster

I really think they would have been better off flipping Chatwood or Bourjos or a package for Wright and letting Trumbo stay at 1B. That would have given them room to play Trout full time, addressed a huge issue at 3B and kept the good production they’re getting from 1B.

Pujols is awesome, but from a roster construction standpoint, I think they missed the target.

Well, there are only five kanji, right?

I immediately recognized two of them in isolation, but that doesn’t do me a whole lot of good.

I can read all the kana, though!

Which also doesn’t do me a whole lot of good.

And the kaomoji!

Which, yeah.

Sigh. I used to be better, I really did.

So what happend to your brother Darth?

What I understand is that you, your brother, and Garoon met outside a Pachinko parlor down by the Arakawa. Garoon was being chased by the local Yakuza after trying to correct their grammar, and you and Darth knocked them unconscious with a golf club and a bus stop sign (including Garoon because he seemed so phony). With a thousand hawk-haired and tattooed men in pursuit, you three disguised yourselves as schoolgirls and fled the country, becoming best friends and rivals every since.

Did I miss something?
