How much faith do you have in the Rangers’ front office?
"I believe and trust them. They’ve done a lot of work. But it goes back to the theory of are you in a sports organization to try to second-guess them. We don’t do that.
"You’re much better off getting real people that know what they’re doing rather than calling plays behind them. If you think you can improve you’re management personally as an owner, you need to get somebody else and not try to do it yourself.
That’s where I disagree with the owners that are so proactive and involved technically. It’s like, knock yourself out if that’s fun for you. That’s in hobby area. Here you get the very best people and support them. We were fortunate in that we had such superb staff when we bought the thing that we’re not reinventing anything."

Related to the owners letting the baseball guys do their work...
“We’ve got guys, frankly, like Josh Hamilton, that I would love to see re-signed. My personal preference, at this moment, would be to re-sign him instead of having Fielder. But we could all debate that. The organization has its feelings. Everybody dreams about having both. Sometimes you can’t have both at some level. If they came around to something we’d do, we’d look at him. But we don’t think it’s likely.”
As long as he listens to the baseball people…

I'm sure it's very tempting to get involved in the technical aspects if you're the owner.
Really, really glad Simpson doesn’t want to do that.
That's where having a committee and Nolan help.
When it’s just one crazy sumbitch like Jerry or Cuban or Hicks… it’s easier to just meddle.

I don't think there's much research to support a pro-micromanagement stance;
however, I’m not sure micromanaging is the right word for meddling sports owners anyway.
Not that you don't know what you're doing...
But I’ve met developers with 10 years experience that most assuredly had no fucking idea what they were doing.
They were effectively paid typists who knew a bit of syntax and terrible ways to design systems.
I wouldn’t think just because someone had experience that they were good.
Of course I also don’t like micromanaging… we hire everyone on a contract-to-full time basis… if I don’t weed them out in the labs during the interview… working with them for a few months usually does.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Do you ever wonder how many get scared off by a contract-to-full-time basis?
I know that I saw enough full-time positions when I was looking to not consider ones that weren’t. But then, I was willing to relocate, so wasn’t just limited to searching DFW.
I've never had a candidate turn us down for it.
I’ve also only had one guy not convert.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Yeah, I don't think there are worthwhile developers who'd have concerns about whether or not they could hack it,
I’d just want to make sure I talked to enough people to get the “are they looking for contracters that they’ll keep a few of, or are they looking for full-time people that they want to be able to screen” question answered.
But on the other hand: it’s at-will, what’s the difference besides how you get paid?
You'd own it like it was a fantasy keeper league, wouldn't you.

and, speaking of Jerry, he’s played football in college, been around the game his entire life, this is his job, not a ‘hobby’, so, if Bob was in a similar upbringing, owned 100% of the team, i’m sure he’d want his input on the team.

Interesting note from Newberg...
He [Yu Darvish] appears remarkably respectful and unassuming for a superstar personality – he reportedly declined the almost-standard perks that others who have come before him have insisted on (housing and car allowances, full-time handlers, etc.), preferring to be treated like the rest of his teammates – and that’s going to go over well in the room and with the media and public.

Yu has taken up a lot of club money
But you’re assuming the Rangers have no long term plan for any of these guys, just the one guy they spent $110 million for – that they’ve never given much thought to how much they’re willing to pay other players whose contracts are running out. You think they’d pay them mega-extensions if they hadn’t signed Yu? I don’t think so. Either these guys are in their long-term plans or they’re not. I don’t think Yu has much to do with it.

Well Napolis is at least plausible for him to ask for given his arb demands
And if Josh is serious about the Werth contract as a baseline that could be plausible as well.
But Holland at 5/60 given his contract status is not plausible in the least.
Now if you would have said 5/40 thats different
And I said 5/40 not too long ago for Holland.
Yes, I know…I initially said 5/50 but I thought Holland was here 3 full years.

And now that Napolis arb demands have come out it appears he was seeking a much higher deal than he probably should.
It was troubling hearing Kinsler say his talks were on hold while the Yu stuff was ongoing but the only one I am really mad about right now is Holland
You
would be really surprised at how little MLB players care about that stuff. They actually want as many players making as much money as possible so that drives the market up as a whole. You keep talking about “the room” yet you have no idea what the room really is.

But Young was also woefully underpaid from 2004-2008.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."
"You want false modesty? F that."
Sure. Players are underpaid, then they get overpaid.
I’ve never understood the fuss over the Young deal.
My only complaint was how early we gave it
At this point, I may wish he weren’t under contract, but I’m hardly bummed we signed the deal.
Players getting overpaid is not automatic.
And how much they get overpaid is certainly worth some thought.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Well, if they don't suck or flame out...
I think his deal had a significant PR purpose at the time it was made.
KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!
HAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWPE!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
But then in general I think the angst over one or two contracts being potentially crippling is overblown.
For the Rangers, it's more overblown now than it was once.
But that’s a recent phenomenon.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
At the time, it was a symptom and a cause.
It didn’t have to be one or the other.
Now it’s just an annoyance.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Oh.
I was still talking about Young.
The Rodriguez signing, and subsequent trade… that’s sort of a different thing, isn’t it? Especially in terms of what you or I or the Rangers or another ballclub would consider “overpaying.”
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Yeah, overpaying is kinda orthagonal to the A-Rod situation,
but the way I was looking at it was that in both cases, if the numbers were big enough that they limited the team’s flexibility, the problem was rooted in Hicks’s fuckheadedness.
Like, for the Young contract to be crippling, you’d have to totally mismanage things badly enough to end up in bankrup…
Heh.
I’d still argue that signing Rodriguez didn’t limit the team’s flexibility, given what happened around him — but then, there’s the question of for how long that level of spending would’ve been sustainable, even had the other transactions been successful (rather than disastrous).
Lots of tricky counterfactuals, there.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Heh. Sorry.
Basically, after Rodriguez signed, the Rangers went out and signed guys like Chan Ho Park and Juan Gonzalez — they had money to spend, they just didn’t spend it well.
Now, I don’t think anyone knows if there were better free agents out there that they could’ve signed, or if there were trades they could’ve pulled for pitching. And even if they had, maybe winning more still wouldn’t have supported the $100M payrolls.
But the question is out there…
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Oh i was just joking—but thanks for putting in the work, heh.
(But that’s still English, not a regular grammar, n00b!)
(Also, agreed.)
I don't think the A-Rod deal limited the team's flexibility too much.
They just completely wasted the flexibility they had.
SB Nation Dallas-Ft. Worth - Christopher Fittz is better than porn!
It's not good business to overpay a player just because he was once underpaid.
He’s earned more of his contract than I expected, so this doesn’t necessarily apply to Young, but giving someone too much to balance out the years where the CBA meant you were getting good value is not a good strategy.
SB Nation Dallas-Ft. Worth - Christopher Fittz is better than porn!
Its not a good strategy but dont you think that if teams start underpaying salaries to FA the players association will move to revamp the pre-FA system?
Impossible without collusion.
Too much benefit to one team saying “you guys have fun with that. I’m going to sign me some FAs.”

The only reason Nomo had so many more innings and strikeouts is that he had so many more starts, to address that out of the way.

by Colonel Travis on Jan 21, 2012 5:44 PM CST up reply actions
So, to answer your question: full words.
The characters are for the most part phonetic — they have phonemes assigned to them, like “fo,” or “wa.” The exceptions, here, are the kanji 高速, which as Telegraph pointed out, mean high speed — but you have to know the characters and their context to know how to pronounce them, and what they mean together. Much, much more complicated.
(And, of course, “SFF.”)

As an aside, thinking over Colby’s NPB (2009) vs US (2010) pitch classifications, I think their technology must be identical to that which is used in the US; both have trouble distinguishing 2-seam, cutters, sinkers, changeups, and some sliders.
Pitch F/X uses profiles for distinguishing pitches.
Pitches that are inconsistently thrown or look really similar give it all kinds of fits.

Shuuto
Mike Fast might agree but it seems inconclusive (he seems to be calling it a catch all “type” which doesn’t seem right)
This article suggests it is a type of 2 seam fastball
Another take:
What Is The "Shuuto"?
The Red Sox’s recent signing of Japanese baseball star Daisuke Matsuzaka has brought the "shuuto" into the English baseball vocabulary. Although variously described as a sinker, two-seam fastball, screwball, gyroball, or splitter, the shuuto is closer to a "reverse slider" that breaks down and in on batters. According to a wikipedia article, "the shuuto is unique because it is a faster pitch with less downward break when compared to a screwball, and has less speed but more lateral break when compared to two-seam fastballs and sinking fastballs." It is more common in Japan where it was the hallmark of Japanese Hall-of-Famer Ryohei Hasegawa, who consistently froze hitters with it while pitching in the 1950s and 60s. In the states, Greg Maddux’s running fastball to left-handers has been described as a shuuto-type pitch in the way it breaks sharply down and inside the strike zone. The video clip below shows Matsuzaka throwing the shuuto while on the Seibu Lions.
Harry Pavlidis parsed his WBC pitch f/x with an interesting spin movement graph.

I do think that when Goldstein says Darvish has "two sliders"
that his slower slider is more like a curveball and his fast slider is more of a true slider. The super slow curve he throws will more than likely be eliminated, but I’d still call his slow slider a curve.

A player is ranked compared to peers in each league for each season he has played predicated on a minimum number of at-bats. Ranked players are assigned a number ranging from 100 to 1 with equal distribution to each number. The worst player receives 1 while the best receives 100. Depending on the number of players eligible, there could be more than 1 or more than 100 assigned. For a player’s career (including the college data we have), the rankings for each rating is averaged providing a final score. For example, if a player played 2 seasons, was 1st in power in 2009 in the California League but 10th in power in 2008 in the Gulf Coast League, his Power Rating will be (100+91)/2 = 96. Since all scores are averages, there is not equal distribution between ratings.

Ben Taylor as Dennis Reynolds – Dennis is a co-owner of Paddy’s Pub and is Beau’s twin brother. Possibly the most sociopathic of the characters, Dennis is narcissistic, selfish, histrionic and vain. Much of his inflated ego is perpetuated by his Ivy League education at the University of Pennsylvania

Interesting that his splitter is his best pitch...

Darvish in the big leagues will likely go 2-seam FB, 4-seam FB, split (best pitch), slider, change (worst). Curve should be scrapped.
I hadn’t heard that before.

I wonder what his sources are on this?
The classifications are tricky.
Yeah, I know he has at least 4 pitches with break or cutting action...
but only see two listed. He has a cutter (not listed), slider, slow slider (not listed, sometimes called a curve), and a slow curve (he says needs to be scrapped).

I though the cutter was supposed to be really good.

Goldstein originally called the cutter his best pitch.
I wonder if he has heard some new scouting reports from people within the Rangers orgination?

I hadn't, either.
I’ve read that it’s hell on lefties, but I didn’t know that it was the best overall.

I think he throws his splitter so little that there are varying reports about it.
I’ve seen a few really nasty ones and always wondered why scouts call it a below average pitch.

Mike Maddux is going to work with Yu and Chuck Morgan on his new "rock star" pitch
which involves an overhand arm slot carefully timed with Chuck flashing a Yu nearly-nude picture on the center field screen and jumbo tron.

I can't take a writer/analyst seriously if he thinks Wang is the best Asian pitcher to come to the States.
Sounds like a typical analyst who values W’s over everything else.

Looks like Boston might have traded Scutaro so they could afford Oswalt
If true, thats not where I wanted him to end up… oh well.
If he's healthy..
then maybe not. But those lingering back problems aren’t easy to get over. Idk how well he’s going to work for them.
That's another airball three from Kidd.
Wow.
