How much faith do you have in the Rangers’ front office?

"I believe and trust them. They’ve done a lot of work. But it goes back to the theory of are you in a sports organization to try to second-guess them. We don’t do that.

"You’re much better off getting real people that know what they’re doing rather than calling plays behind them. If you think you can improve you’re management personally as an owner, you need to get somebody else and not try to do it yourself.

That’s where I disagree with the owners that are so proactive and involved technically. It’s like, knock yourself out if that’s fun for you. That’s in hobby area. Here you get the very best people and support them. We were fortunate in that we had such superb staff when we bought the thing that we’re not reinventing anything."

Related to the owners letting the baseball guys do their work...
“We’ve got guys, frankly, like Josh Hamilton, that I would love to see re-signed. My personal preference, at this moment, would be to re-sign him instead of having Fielder. But we could all debate that. The organization has its feelings. Everybody dreams about having both. Sometimes you can’t have both at some level. If they came around to something we’d do, we’d look at him. But we don’t think it’s likely.”

As long as he listens to the baseball people…

That's where having a committee and Nolan help.

When it’s just one crazy sumbitch like Jerry or Cuban or Hicks… it’s easier to just meddle.

Not that you don't know what you're doing...

But I’ve met developers with 10 years experience that most assuredly had no fucking idea what they were doing.

They were effectively paid typists who knew a bit of syntax and terrible ways to design systems.

I wouldn’t think just because someone had experience that they were good.

Of course I also don’t like micromanaging… we hire everyone on a contract-to-full time basis… if I don’t weed them out in the labs during the interview… working with them for a few months usually does.

I’d just want to make sure I talked to enough people to get the “are they looking for contracters that they’ll keep a few of, or are they looking for full-time people that they want to be able to screen” question answered.

But on the other hand: it’s at-will, what’s the difference besides how you get paid?

Interesting note from Newberg...
He [Yu Darvish] appears remarkably respectful and unassuming for a superstar personality – he reportedly declined the almost-standard perks that others who have come before him have insisted on (housing and car allowances, full-time handlers, etc.), preferring to be treated like the rest of his teammates – and that’s going to go over well in the room and with the media and public.

Yu has taken up a lot of club money

But you’re assuming the Rangers have no long term plan for any of these guys, just the one guy they spent $110 million for – that they’ve never given much thought to how much they’re willing to pay other players whose contracts are running out. You think they’d pay them mega-extensions if they hadn’t signed Yu? I don’t think so. Either these guys are in their long-term plans or they’re not. I don’t think Yu has much to do with it.

Assuming you’re talking about this offseason, I think that’s crazy. And, yes, World Series Game 4 changed everything.

I’d rather have the production for one more year and the draft pick.

Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.

by Snark on Jan 21, 2012 2:45 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, overpaying is kinda orthagonal to the A-Rod situation,

but the way I was looking at it was that in both cases, if the numbers were big enough that they limited the team’s flexibility, the problem was rooted in Hicks’s fuckheadedness.

Like, for the Young contract to be crippling, you’d have to totally mismanage things badly enough to end up in bankrup…

by Closure GT on Jan 21, 2012 2:48 PM CST up reply actions

Heh.

I’d still argue that signing Rodriguez didn’t limit the team’s flexibility, given what happened around him — but then, there’s the question of for how long that level of spending would’ve been sustainable, even had the other transactions been successful (rather than disastrous).

Lots of tricky counterfactuals, there.

Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.

by Snark on Jan 21, 2012 2:51 PM CST up reply actions

Heh. Sorry.

Basically, after Rodriguez signed, the Rangers went out and signed guys like Chan Ho Park and Juan Gonzalez — they had money to spend, they just didn’t spend it well.

Now, I don’t think anyone knows if there were better free agents out there that they could’ve signed, or if there were trades they could’ve pulled for pitching. And even if they had, maybe winning more still wouldn’t have supported the $100M payrolls.

But the question is out there…

It's not good business to overpay a player just because he was once underpaid.

He’s earned more of his contract than I expected, so this doesn’t necessarily apply to Young, but giving someone too much to balance out the years where the CBA meant you were getting good value is not a good strategy.

But I can’t for Nomo yet. Baseball-Reference doesn’t have Nomo’s Japanese stats, so I might have to go to the box scores of his individual games. I can’t find a Japanese source that has extended boxes like that collected.

What I’m having a hard time finding so far is hits per season and walk totals. The Japanese cites I can decipher don’t include walks.

They adjusted to MLB pretty well. I think the Rangers see Darvish as comparable to those kind of pitchers, while you are comparing him to Yoshi.

OK, so all in one place

(1) Straight
(2) Curve
(3) Slow curve
(4) Slider
(5) Kanji-d slider
(6) Cutter (“cutball”)
(7) Forkball
(8) Changeup
(9) Kanji-d changeup
(10) I think this says “one-seam,” but that doesn’t make much sense.
(11) Two-seamer (I’m pretty sure)
(12) Split-fingered fastball
(13) Sinker
(14) Knuckleball

If anyone out there can double-check me on this, please do.

by Colonel Travis on Jan 21, 2012 5:44 PM CST up reply actions

So, to answer your question: full words.

The characters are for the most part phonetic — they have phonemes assigned to them, like “fo,” or “wa.” The exceptions, here, are the kanji 高速, which as Telegraph pointed out, mean high speed — but you have to know the characters and their context to know how to pronounce them, and what they mean together. Much, much more complicated.

(And, of course, “SFF.”)

As an aside, thinking over Colby’s NPB (2009) vs US (2010) pitch classifications, I think their technology must be identical to that which is used in the US; both have trouble distinguishing 2-seam, cutters, sinkers, changeups, and some sliders.

Shuuto

Mike Fast might agree but it seems inconclusive (he seems to be calling it a catch all “type” which doesn’t seem right)

This article suggests it is a type of 2 seam fastball

Another take:
What Is The "Shuuto"?
The Red Sox’s recent signing of Japanese baseball star Daisuke Matsuzaka has brought the "shuuto" into the English baseball vocabulary. Although variously described as a sinker, two-seam fastball, screwball, gyroball, or splitter, the shuuto is closer to a "reverse slider" that breaks down and in on batters. According to a wikipedia article, "the shuuto is unique because it is a faster pitch with less downward break when compared to a screwball, and has less speed but more lateral break when compared to two-seam fastballs and sinking fastballs." It is more common in Japan where it was the hallmark of Japanese Hall-of-Famer Ryohei Hasegawa, who consistently froze hitters with it while pitching in the 1950s and 60s. In the states, Greg Maddux’s running fastball to left-handers has been described as a shuuto-type pitch in the way it breaks sharply down and inside the strike zone. The video clip below shows Matsuzaka throwing the shuuto while on the Seibu Lions.

Harry Pavlidis parsed his WBC pitch f/x with an interesting spin movement graph.

A player is ranked compared to peers in each league for each season he has played predicated on a minimum number of at-bats. Ranked players are assigned a number ranging from 100 to 1 with equal distribution to each number. The worst player receives 1 while the best receives 100. Depending on the number of players eligible, there could be more than 1 or more than 100 assigned. For a player’s career (including the college data we have), the rankings for each rating is averaged providing a final score. For example, if a player played 2 seasons, was 1st in power in 2009 in the California League but 10th in power in 2008 in the Gulf Coast League, his Power Rating will be (100+91)/2 = 96. Since all scores are averages, there is not equal distribution between ratings.
