interesting
I remember some people here saying how Joe won’t last a year without his job. Didn’t even go that long.
This might make me sound like a dick, but I don’t exactly feel sad about this one. All those little kids molested because of his inaction.
And now he dies without fully telling his side of the story.
Not to stir up this whole debate again but
All those little kids were molested because of Jerry Sandusky’s Dick.

Sorry but
McQueary was the one who should have reported what he saw to the police, since he was the one who saw Sandusky raping the boy.
Well, technically...
The AD and the School President are captains as well and share in the culpability for their non-actions.
As indefensible as his actions were, his passing is still sad.

McQueary was the actual witness
it was his responsibility to report what he saw to the police, not Paterno.
Yup, Paterno had no obligation to do anything.

There's a lot of this that goes around.
It’s like a passive-aggressive thing, where they get to defend his inaction, while also being able to claim total deniability for having defended his inaction.

Paterno may not have had a legal obligation to report it
but he had a moral responsibility

Paterno allowed Sandusky to attend a Penn St. practice as recently as 2007
with a 13 year-old child.
There is no defense for his continued inaction.
He took action.

I know he will be missed by his family, friends and many in the college football world.
He is a college coaching legend even with the Sandusky situation. But the man lived 85 years while getting to do the job he enjoyed most. He was able to live an active, full life until pretty much to the end. Which is a luxury many do not get to enjoy as they are either robbed of their youth, prime, early on in their retirement years or wind up in a nursing home with their minds slipping away and few visitors. In the end, he was never going to outlive the disgrace caused by the recent events. From a pain standpoint, at his age he was probably better off dying quickly then battling the cancer and the treatments over an extended period of time.
ESPN, you read my mind

Quite like this.

There are too many things built into that kind of valuation to make a blanket statement like that.
JoePa’s life is a collection of decisions and events. He did quite a few outstanding things that are being lost because of the Sandusky scandal, which was unspeakably awful.

No, you didn't.
It’s not nearly as easy as saying “withdraw actual occupation, insert hypothetical occupation, make judgment.”
Paterno’s record is based on the entirety of his life, not just this sequence of events and how he handled himself. Calling him a “pathetic human being” is based off entirely one portion of his life. It affects how he should be viewed, but it shouldn’t overshadow everything else he’s ever done simply because it happened later and is fresher on your mind.
To address the hypo, though, if he was the milkman, he wouldn’t have had the same opportunities to do all of the great things he did. Those things define him just as much, arguably more considering the entire scope of his life, than this horrible scandal.

And your standards are ridiculous.
He heard about something inappropriate. He told his bosses. It was reported to the police. I guess he could have run to the nearest phone booth, changed into a blue spandex suit with a red cape and flew to Sanduskys house to rip the guy’s throat out. But then people like you would probably shit on him after that for not sodomizing the corpse afterward.
by blakethegr8 on Jan 22, 2012 11:45 AM CST up reply actions
This gets too close to the "he didn't do anything wrong" argument. That's too far the other way.
There are plenty of things he could/should have done to make sure the abuse stopped. He failed in his moral obligation to protect that child and others from a predator.
My point is that that failure, which he recognized and asked forgiveness for, shouldn’t overshadow everything else in his entire life. Whether they were tied to his job or not, and I’m not entirely sure why that matters at all, JoePa did many great things that also have to be taken into consideration.
If, after going through that kind of holistic evaluation, you still think that JoePa’s life is one defined by the Sandusky scandal, I suppose I can’t really gainsay that valuation. If you don’t even try, though, you’re just being intentionally myopic.

I honestly think he did enough to at least get past the "scumbag" standard
He could have done more. That doesn’t necessarily make what he did abhorrent.
People act like he covered up the shower incident. It was reported. The District Attorney decided that there wouldn’t be a criminal case filed. I think people are holding Paterno to an unrealistic standard. As far as letting Sandusky stick around campus after that, I think that’s on the administration more than the football coach.
by blakethegr8 on Jan 22, 2012 11:59 AM CST up reply actions
Kinda right
A DA didn’t file charges in about 2000 after a mother of a victim complained to university police about Sandusky showering with her son.
Many people say Paterno should have done more. But does that mean assaults would have ended? A parent notified police about her son’s experience, Sandusky admitted to it and said he wouldn’t do it again. So the fact Paterno didn’t notify the police makes him a scumbag? How about the DA, the janitor, etc. etc. There are probably 20 people in this situation that “should have done more.”

that's fair
I guess I don’t have a very good sense of all the positive things he did during his life, as I wrote in another post.
Will do some light research into this. When I do my own final, personal math here, for Joe to come out as a decent person he will have needed to do some truly special thing to offset his failures with the abused children.

The fact that, by all accounts, he was an overwhelmingly positive influence on the lives of thousands of young men in his coaching career.
There are people that love him for the wrong reasons, because they wrongly deify him or think that they have to because of his connection with their university, as well as for the right ones.

Not being confrontational, trying to see if I can move past my strong instincts to think of the man as a coward/failure.
I think my problem is that I don’t really have a sense for all the great things he’s said to have done. Can you more specifically describe this overwhelmingly positive influence? Roughly how many thousands of lives did he actually influence? In what ways and to what extent?
I’m going to think more about this. Trying to weigh these positives vs. the reprehensible inaction with the kids.

Wow sad for his family and supporters, imo he died more of a broken heart then this cancer imo..
That happened to my grand mother after my father passed away.
I wonder
if he did that interview this past week because he knew his days were numbered (as in ‘very few’). It would be as close to ‘his story’ as we’d ever get.
As noted above, he did die of a broken heart; his football was taken away from him, and he knows he let people down. We all do – sometimes with greater consequences than others.
Fuck him.
The world is a little lighter and we all have slightly more air to breathe.
