Monday Morning Rangers Update
Might we find out this week where Prince Fielder is going to play baseball in 2012 or is he brilliantly holding out to avoid the rigors of Spring Training?
Richard Durrett has begun his "Positional Outlook" series and focuses today on the catcher position. Now you know it's almost baseball season again.
Gerry Fraley writes that, if tradition holds true, the Rangers could open the 2013 season in Japan. He notes that Jon Daniels has said the Rangers are open to this possibility.
In a special to the Star-Telegram, Jim Reeves has a piece on the Tom Vandergriff/Rangers movie that Vandergriff's grandson is trying to get made.
Finally, Jon Heyman reports that David Eckstein chose retirement over playing with the Mariners. Burn.

Correct.

Jon Daniels on relationship with #Rangers Young: "I’d love to walk in and hug everybody every day, but that’s not critical to us winning." 2/19/11
I'm ready for something to be real
and I definitely prefer it to benefit the Rangers.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
If it is reported by Jim Bowden....
don’t believe it.
I don’t read his ESPN Insider musing. But, listening to him on XM is becoming a beating.
If Eckstein is retired then
there’s now a place in the league for Leury Garcia. And the Rangers need a UIF that can play short…

Rangers in Japan
NOOOOOO!!!!!
That is just a sideshow that the team doesn’t need. Plus, the games will be on at 4 in the morning or something.
"A lot of people may not know this, but I happen to be quite famous." - Sam "MayDay" Malone
Yes, sideshow
Just like NFL games in Europe. All they do is interrupt the teams involved and return nothing but a few extra bucks to the leagues. They are useless.
"A lot of people may not know this, but I happen to be quite famous." - Sam "MayDay" Malone
International marketing isn't useless
But you’re right that it might be disadvantageous to the Rangers, individually, though
Europe's interest in American football is a bit different that Japan and baseball
and we have 162 games vs 16. It means more to give up a home game in football.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
It would be a home game for the Rangers most likely
Unless we’re opening up the season against the Mariners, we’ve got the most popular Japanese baseball player on our side.
Josey Wales: "And if you think intangibles really do exist, how in the F could you vote Ellsbury as the MVP?"
Adam J. Morris: "If it weren’t for my horse, I wouldn’t have spent that year in college."
I'd rather it officially be an away game for us
so we can have 81 home games and 3 away games where the crowd is on our side.
Oh yeah, definitely

this would seem to be the case
but I’ll hope until he signs with the other team. at this point, it seems like we have a 50/50 shot at him
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I woke up and decided to harden my heart to Prince and just be content with Yu.
Prince always scared me, but I’ve gotten so caught up in how awesome we’d be next year, I’ve kind of intentionally blinded myself to the negatives. Of course, a long term deal for Hamilton is potentially just as negative.
Shit.

"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
What relevance do flamethrowers, machine guns and chainsaws...
mounted on to the front of the bus have in your survival or demise if none of them are actually turned on and directed in a way most likely to cause injury. Also, if all those things are on the bus, where will the bus driver have any space to steer? Is this a flat-nosed bus or one with the motor up front?
Last, chainsaws are difficult to start, so are they going to be started upon seeing you or are they going to already be going. Because if that is the case, they will probably run out of gas beforehand and then someone is going to have to mix the oil and gas and we all know how that goes when driving 70.
You keep saying this
but I know that a crazy optimist like you has way more hope than you are letting on.

And honestly, I'm okay with this....
As long as we don’t extend Hamilton. I’m not even sure what bats are available next offseason, but I do not want Hamilton at the price it will take.
Really weak market for bats.
That is why Prince could do economic pearings on the open market next year. He would be smart to take a 1 year deal and re-enter the market next winter.

by Jose Cardenal on Jan 23, 2012 9:06 AM CST up reply actions
Well, yes that is probable.
But I think we wind up with either Prince or Josh next year. We don’t have anyone coming up to replace the production that would be lost if we don’t have either one.

Weak for 1b next off-season, but kind of deep for bats
But you have Hamilton, Napoli, Bourne, Berkman, Aybar, Stephen Drew, BJ Upton, Ethier, Quentin, Swisher
That's really not that great of a market

Is out of control! I stopped by the Academy in Keller on my way to work today planning to pick up a ticket for the event tonight. Surprised to find people lined up around the corner of the building when I arrived. I was even more surprised when I learned these people were planning on sitting there until 4:30 this afternoon when tickets are distributed (other academy locations have started giving out tickets at 8). I was shocked to find the people in the front of the line had been there since 4 PM yesterday. Amazing.

Baltimore, seattle, and possibly Dodgers
they can pony up money..but if Prince wants to go to a contender..its just leverage talk

The fucking Orioles are going to ruin everything.
Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal
Presence of #Orioles in Fielder derby, as reported by @Jim_Duquette, could set up O’s vs. #Nationals, giving Boras leverage he needs. #MLB

rabble, rabble
butts in seats
but honestly, what are the O’s thinking? That team is so far away from competing, and his age curve, even if you do want him, looks scary. How can smart people getting paid to run a baseball team really think signing him to something like an 8-year deal would be a good plan?
At what point do you say screw it,
we’re tired of trying to build from within?

I guess that's a rationale
But dang, you’d have to squint hard looking at that roster to think that a really good offensive 1B is going to get you w/in shouting distance of the Rays, Yanks and Sox … not to mention the Jays.
Now, the Jays … that would make some sense as the AL mystery team
just saying
but the Rangers had very recently competed for and made the playoffs – and SS was a hole
Yeah,
I don’t disagree, but you don’t want to become the Pirates, so…

They do have
A CF and C that they like a lot, a RF with some offensive chops and a really good SS on the way …
If Fielder is going to sign somewhere for 8+ years, Baltimore wouldn’t bother me much. We’d still not see him much, and it would make life that much tougher for an AL East WC birth
I have a feeling
knowing what we know and from reading above twits that Buck Showalter is tired of building from within. He’s lost patience. Just a guess.

I'm with you.
I always thought it was a weird hire to begin with. Buck didn’t seem like the guy willing to play a bunch of kids, lose 90 games and improve in small increments.

Not just that...
…but how can so much talent go in and so little in the way of results come out?

Also true.

Tony Romo ANYA+ for career:

112

121
That’s yards per attempt adjusted up for touchdowns, down for interceptions and sacks, and compared to league average the same way ERA+ and OPS+ are. 120 is what PFR calls generally league leader neighborhood.

I just spoke with several GMs
who have confirmed that two mystery teams are the only ones in on Fielder. My sources wouldn’t give specific details but I’m told that one team plays their games on the face of the sun in July and the other is located in close proximity to the government. More on this as it develops.
