Baseball America Rangers Top 10 Prospect List

Baseball America has their Rangers top 10 prospect list out today, and the bottom of the list is rather unexpected.

The top 10:

1. Yu Darvish, rhp
2. Jurickson Profar, ss
3. Martin Perez, lhp
4. Mike Olt, 3b
5. Leonys Martin, of
6. Neil Ramirez, rhp
7. Cody Buckel, rhp
8. Jorge Alfaro, c
9. Christian Villanueva, 3b
10. Rougned Odor, 2b

Buckel, Villanueva and Odor cracking the top 10 is something of a curveball, at least to me, although as we've discussed before, there are about 20 guys after the top five (or six, if you include Darvish) which you could mix in in any particular order, and have a legitimate argument for them.

You can see the list, the top tools in the system, the projected 2015 lineup, the top prospects and draft picks of the decade, and the top signing bonuses given out by the Rangers by clicking the link above.

It's always weird seeing Kinsler projected

as a future LF, or in this case, a DH. The guy’s fantastic at 2B. Even with Profar coming up, this seems like a major misuse unless his defensive abilities plummet in the next several years.

2B isn't a position that you feel great about in terms of performance past peak years.

Yeah

I remember reading about that, and noticing how it manifested exactly that way. That trend never truly made sense to me, though. Unless there’s something mystical about 2Bmen?
Maybe it’s the fact that 2nd basemen aren’t as athletic as shortstops, but are expected to play a similar position with similar offensive output. As they age, they get hit harder than most and the anemic bats can’t keep them viable anymore?
Hmmm….

I don't know if there's a known rationale for it,

but I assumed it was that they were smaller guys who generally endure more contact that SS or 3B, so injuries pile up quicker.

They get more stress on their knees and hips turning the double play than SS do.

with 1 a game.
Does that once-a-game effort (MAYBE 1.5, considering attempted DPs in which the runner beats throw to 1st) really have that large an effect?

They're young.

Give them time. 1 thing I appreciate is they actually go to non-major league regular season games to produce their own scouting reports with video.

Thing I like the most is they are willing to stray far from consensus if they feel strongly about something. Lots of potential there.

PP - A couple of years ago I used it as a reference

They were pretty good in picking up on players of interest outside of other lists. Unfortunately they value floor way too high for my tastes and many of their actual rankings just seem to stray away from consensus just to stray away from consensus. As of now I occasionally look at them… but definitely not as a main source of info.

But that’s why I like them. Most of my “scouting” is done via Sickels, google and Fangraphs (stats, not lists). PP is nice for a unique view.

Sickels watches as many guys as he can, he says,

but he’s limited because of his son’s circumstances.

(This is pretty much a paraphrase of his response to Jason Parks.)

It’s unclear how he treats stats, as far as I can see, and also unclear how he treats seeing guys in person. The whole process is murky.

More specifically:
If they come through the Texas League or PCL or the Big 12 I usually see them. Video or tv on as many of the others as possible, and I know people who get to see the guys I don’t.

No prob.

I’m not saying Sickels doesn’t lean very heavily on stats, by the way — but he’s taken pains, in the past, to point out that he sees as many of these guys in person as possible. This is perhaps in reaction to criticism directed at him for not seeing enough prospects in person, and being too reliant on stats…

Certainly, when it comes to Rangers prospects, I’d go with Cole and Parks first and foremost.

I love these look forward projections

I’ll say right now – if Holland is the #5 starter in 2015, then we’ve all gotten over the pain of game 6 (actually, I’ll never get over the pain of seeing the guy in front of me at Busch drop his full beer and jump up and down when Freese homered - because that will mean we’ve probably won or will win a WS.

There is also no way this team (a) extends BOTH Cruz and Josh. And if it does extend Ian and Elvis, the Ian is playing LF, not DH.

Finally, Martin Perez is not, and will never be, better than Holland.

more a factor of what i've seen in Perez

the 1/2 dozen times I’ve seen him. Over-powering isn’t a thought I come away with. Now, maybe he’s a great example of a player that has their secondary stuff “play up” when they reach the majors (jeez – aren’t you glad I didn’t say “The Show”?) and maybe he becomes better than Holland without “overpowering”. But when I watch the two and compare, I don’t see them being even in the same class.

Jack Daddy

by Jack Daddy on Jan 23, 2012 10:40 AM CST up reply actions

They both have mid-90s fastballs, use their secondaries off of that,

and struggle with game to game consistency.

Holland may indeed have better stuff, but given the drawbacks we’ve already seen from him (gets wild, can live too much in the zone, etc), I don’t see how you can say a reasonably well thought of (and still quite young) prospect will never be better than Holland, and I’m a huge Holland fan.

Perez has good enough stuff to be successful in the majors. Perhaps even better stuff would give him a larger margin for error, but the areas he needs to improve in don’t really revolve around ‘throwing harder’.

I’ve seen him 5-6 times and I bet that I can count the number of times that he’s topped 92-93 on one hand. I would agree with you if he threw mid 90s. Maybe I saw him on off days. But I can only remember a few swings and misses on FBs. Maybe 2.

by Goyogringo on Jan 23, 2012 8:44 PM CST up reply actions

How much less, do you figure?

Based on FanGraphs — dangerous, I know — Holland averaged a 92-92.5mph fastball his first couple seasons, before getting up to 94 this season.

If we’re drawing a contrast between Perez and Holland, and looking at fastball velocities and secondaries, I’m wondering if what Jack Daddy saw is enough to conclude that Perez will be less “overpowering,” Having seen little of Perez, it’s an honest question.

I think Cole (or Parks, or both) labelled Perez's change a plus pitch.

I don’t think I remember Holland being credited with a plus change, but I could be forgetting that. I’m not arguing one way or the other; just genuinely interested in someone’s take on whether Perez is (as Jack Daddy’s arguing) never going to be as good as (or better than) Holland.

I don't think it was ever plus, you're right. (Holland's change).

I don’t see any reason to be so positive that Perez can’t be as good as Holland. He has three plus pitches and is 20 years old. What is certain about him other than that he has potential?

I think it's more about where people think Holland is than Perez.

I love Holland as much as the next guy. I’ve been lauding him, it seems, for two years now non-stop. The guy we saw in Game 4 was tremendous. Pitched one of the best games in franchise history, if not the best considering the circumstances. He CAN do that every time he goes out.

But he almost certainly won’t. That game was about as good as he gets. That was a peak performance, not a new norm.

They started that in 2007, and it's a lot of fun to go back and look through. I know it's a projection that leans

toward what is on hand and in the minors rather than a true forecast. Still, it’s fun to see the disparity.

In 2006, Kinsler was their #6 Rangers’ prospect, behind Volquez, Danks, Diamond, Arias, and Hurley. He wasn’t on the 2007 prospect list, since he was in the majors, but that’s the year the lineup projections began.

Projected (actual) 2010 lineup:
C: Laird (Treanor/Molina)
1B: Tex (Smoak/Moreland/Davis)
2B: Kinsler (Kinsler)
3B: Blalock (Young)

I think the new NFL rookie contract scales will negate that affect

Depending on just how low the “slotting” for the top picks are it could push some kids to college instead of signing out of HS.

But its mainly going to make kids decide if the risk of going to college for at least 2 if not 3 years (1 year for JuCos which may see the biggest impact of all this) is worth the potential extra couple million dollars to move from the bottom of the 1st round to the middle or top of the 1st round.

In the past that reward could have been huge but now with the slotting system its not that great.

Hunter was a successful pick

At #54, if a guy is a contributor on a major league team, that’s a success.

He currently has the 9th highest bWAR of any player picked #54 overall.

Scott Sanderson and Randy Wolf are 1-2, but then after that, you have Brett Tomko and Steve Ontiveros in the 7.5 bWAR range, and I don’t think it would be a surprise if he ended up passing them to be the 3rd best pick there.

They have been particularly

bad in the early rounds (top 4/5) and terrible with hitters during the JD era. Their amateur staff needs to do a better job evaluating (US) hitting talent. I thought one of the reasons for the Welke/Preller “coup” was to address this weakness but outside of Olt things don’t seem to look any better but we can’t say for sure for a couple more years…

What is weird is that their skill at evaluating Latin American hitting talent has improved every year since Preller (and staff) came on board, save for Esdras Abreu, though, they have only been in on elite (7 figure) j2 hitters beginning in 2009.

I think that’s where the aggravation over Darvish’s ranking might be coming from.

So I revisited that Davenport projection for Martin.

I found a mistake I made (giving him 55 PAs, when it’s 55 ABs), and park adjusted. With an adjustment, his wOBA comes out at .317. Without (in case he already adjusts) that’s .322.

That’s about a third of a run above average every 200 PAs in the 2011 context. Roughly three times that without park adjustment. In any case, it’s slightly above average.

In 600 PAs, that’s about 23 runs above a replacement centerfielder with average defense.

So, in short, the Davenport projection for Martin’s rookie year is pretty much an average offensive centerfielder given a full season; ever-so-slightly better. You can add runs on top of that if you think he’s a good fielder.

So, less thrilled, but I’d still be happy with it.

I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed with that

from a rookie up the middle guy. I’d be thrilled, actually, assuming his defense is at least average, since it helps keep Hamilton in LF and assuages some of our worries about OF depth (and the long term picture of the OF in general).

I feel more confident that he will be an above average fielder than anything else.

If you give me an average bat to go with it, especially in his first year, I would feel great about it even though I’m not sure how long, if ever, it takes him to reach that ~AllStar ceiling.

The thought occurred to me driving in...

If we do magically sign Fielder (very unlikely to happen and all)…

We would have an all star (or all star level in the case of Napoli) at every position but CF.

I’m a huge fan of both Villenueva and Buckel and I think they are both deserving of their top ten spots. Anyways, this system is going to be fun to watch this year.

We've had one class, so far

Discussed extremely basic bankruptcy stuff, of which I was familiar from my days with Stutzman. Then we discussed a case, Begier, talking about how managers/directors are liable if they retain withheld taxes and enter bankruptcy.
