CFB OTL: National Signing Day Week Thread

It's been 2 weeks since the Tide rolled in New Orleans and a lot has happened since that may have gone unnoticed.

Coach Kelly from Oregon supposedly interviewed with the Bucs.

Tressel "The Vest" supposedly interviewed with the Colts.

And your mom.

This is the (un)official annual CFB Rumor Thread for College Football's craziest day of the year before Spring Practices begin: National Signing Day, February 1st, 2012. Lot's of drama has happened on this day. Who can forget Corey Nelson stabbing A&M in the back at the deadline to go to OU? Cam Newton turning down Mississippi State Money for Auburn Money? And many more.....

Talk it up, trash on others' teams, throw tweets out, make fun of my Aggies(it's ok. I can handle it. FP can't.), and above all.......

RABBLE ON!!!!

PS - rec this puppy up. There's no way NBA Threads should be getting this much love over CFB. You know this.

As bad as this sucked, I'd rather him have left now than during Fall Practice.

Some of the out-of-state shockers end up getting homesick, eg Lavelle Hawkins for LSU a few years ago.

Unfortunately, Kiel’s little game also cost us Patrick Miller since we didn’t have a spring schollie available for him.

Still nervous about Trey Williams

even though he said he’s fully committed to A&M. Even so, A&M’s class will be vastly underrated I believe. Love me some Sumlin.

As much as I like Trey Williams

the area of recruiting most important for A&M’s move to the SEC are the linemen. This year’s class has some impressive skill players committed, but it’s still weak on linemen. Especially with the move to the 4-3, I’d like to see some big DTs committed.

really excited for what TCU's class looks like

easily the best they’ve ever had, and they’ve got a real shot at picking up another 1 or 2 big names in Blake and Fuller (moreso Blake, me thinks).

Top 20 class potentially, and that’s pretty remarkable for a team that’s situation was in so much flux throughout the recruiting period.

Him and his dad have openly said his future to the NFL is at CB

but ever since UT came in and offered him the gadget/slot spot, he’s more open to offense.

I don’t know how he’s going to get more than 5-7 touches a game with Brown/Bergeron/Gray back there, and no consistent passing game.

CB was one of our worst spots last year. He'd get PT there his true freshman year, almost guaranteed.

Patterson also promised him KO/PR duties. Don’t know if UT offered him the same, so I can’t compare.

He keeps saying they don’t know if the #’s will work, but UT just offered Santos last week over the phone, as well as some other out of state guys in the months prior when Daje was saying the same thing.

He really wants that offer.

but I am excited about TCU and WVU coming to the conference. As far as football is concerned I think TCU and WVU isat least a small gain over A&M and Mizzou. My only question is how TCU holds up playing big boys every week. Looking forward to next year to see it play out.

I think they will be fine.

I think we’ll see that they aren’t necessarily at Top 5 or 8 program like they have risen to in the past, but that they’ll still be a solid 10-25 team.

WVU is also bringing some good basketball.

As first reported by the Michigan football blog Tremendous and It’s Always Sunny in Detroit, Michigan commitment Kyle Kalis received numerous threats from Ohio State fans after he committed to play for the Wolverines this fall. In fact, the threats were explicit and incredibly brazen, with more than one fan chiming in to say they hoped the offensive lineman tore his ACL. Of course, there’s a reason why the hatred for Kalis was particularly fierce; he had previously committed to Ohio State before opening his future back up after the firing of Jim Tressel.

OSU appeared to get some good, underrated talent in this class.

But with A&M out of the division, anything less then the 3rd best recruiting class in the Big 12 and a top 20 class nationally is disappointing for a team that just won 12 games and the Fiesta Bowl. Yes, it was a solid class and yes Gundy and his staff has shown ability to find underrated talent. But it wasn’t the step forward that they needed this season.

success on the field isnt generally doesnt make much of an impact until 2,3 and 4 years later.

as always, a lot of other factors go into recruiting a high school recruit, but one could easily attribute a good portion of bama’s success in recruiting this class to our 09 championship. OSU will still probably get those bigger name recruits and start landing top 20-15 classes, but you will probably have to wait another year or two for that to happen.

by DFWAg on Jan 25, 2012 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think they did that

I just think it was a lower priority. They assumed they would have RGIII for 1 more year, Florence for 2 years (who looks to be capable) and depth in Pettis. If you can add a guy you like, then sure, but 3 QB’s with experience and serious issues on defense meant they put their efforts elsewhere.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 25, 2012 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

I'll rephrase that.

I think we had a list of guys we’d like to have had, but we never really went hard after the position. Briles believed that in 2012 he’d have RG3 (5th-year Senior), Florence (RS Junior), and Petty (RS Junior) on campus. From what I know of their actions, they (Briles and Montgomery) basically kick-started QB recruiting after the OU game when Robert leaving became a possibility and really started calling around after the season ended and Robert moved into the pole position for the Heisman. Then when he won the Heisman, they realized he was going to leave and started hitting it hard.

The real failure here is not to get someone better for 2012 because the guys we would have gone after were already gone by the time we really thought we’d need one. The failure was not getting someone in 2011 to help bridge the gap between Petty and either the 2012 or 2013 recruit.

Even still, I know they targeted a few guys early on and missed on all of them, so they basically punted on the position for 2012 until the process I just mentioned.

I know for a fact that they are selling playing time and DatHeisman hard in 2013 and it is apparently working. All three of our major QB targets are at least interested, though I don’t think we really have a chance with 2 of them, and I think we’ll pull the one Briles really wants.

He will be. He's a RS freshman this year.

So Briles believed he had a 5-4-3 for 2012 (which was probably reason to believe at that point), and the real failure was not having a 2 on campus to fill in the gap.

JW Walsh committed early to Okie State and never wavered. Hundley took longer with UCLA, but we were never in it. Michael Brewer committed to Tech at one of their junior days and nobody heard a word from him again. Johnny Manziel was a relatively late offer as he blew up and then he went to A&M. Rivals shows an offer for Dexter Foreman, but I don’t think that’s actually true.

Even last year he seemed much more natural at a pocket passing game than a few guys I can think of in recent drafts.

Also, his completion% was artificially boosted last year by all of the WR screens and short passes that they used [sometimes to the point of absurdity]. This year his yards per attempt was 10.7, the highest in the country. Last year he was at 7.7, 31st in Division1.

but they havent been on the national stage like this before.

2010 – #13
2009 – unranked but receiving votes
2008 – #16
2007 – unranked

this year, OSU challenged for a national title. they were constantly mentioned in the national media. they were a main player in a BCS clusterfuck. they won one of the more hyped up BCS bowl games of the season. In a state dominated by OU, and in a conference dominated by UT, you cant really say that 9 wins will get you a top 15 recruiting class.

Not to mention, there are lot of other factors that go into it as well – the needs of the teams you recruit against, how good is your in-state class.

This was one of the first years where young recruits in the junior and freshman seasons are getting good looks at OSU and might be liking what they see. They will go to more OSU camps and get hands on training from OSU coaches and see OSU’s new facilities. These things take time, especially for a program like OSU. I really think OSU will start getting up there in recruiting, but you have to be patient.

They will never out-recruit OU and UT.

I have also probably overreacted so far considering we are still several days from signing day. Some commits from a couple of interested players could give them a big leap. It still seems like they got too caught up in their national hype which caused them to get some marginal interest from top recruits from outside their traditional recruiting region. They focused too much on these recruits and not enough on the type of recruits from their region that has gotten them this far.

Are the choices Scout/Rivals/247/Maxpreps?

I’m not as big of a fan of Rivals as I used to be because they’ve lost so many people. They don’t have near the breadth that they used to but they claim that they do. They do a fine job with the elite guys, but recruiting for most schools is about the guys in the middle and Rivals just doesn’t cover them like they used to. I like Brian Perroni (even though he’s a smarmy Ag), but that’s about it.

I’d say 247 and Scout are my two favorites, though Scout is slipping somewhat on football.

Maxpreps sucks. So does ESPN.

i prefer rivals

but the fact of the matter is rivals, espn, scout, 247 all have their pros and cons. after all is said and done, i typically weight what they all have to say. Most of them are in harmony with the big name recruits – your goldmans, collins, DGBs of the world – but the difference usually comes through in the 4-star rankings.

Also, recruiting can be such a crapshoot i rarely pay attention to individual recruits ranking/star status. If you are landing a top 5 or 10 class, you are going to be in great shape.

Rankings and star status

have strong correlations with a player’s odds of becoming an All-American.

It’s a crap shoot, but the better you recruit, the better the odds, by significant amounts.

by Jobu. on Jan 25, 2012 3:28 PM CST up reply actions

That's like saying when a .350 hitter is up at the plate, it's a crapshoot if they get a hit

by Jobu. on Jan 25, 2012 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

Shit, SBNation just ate my comment because I responded to ASL

Short version: I wrote on ODB last week (very briefly) about how people dog the recruiting sites when they really shouldn’t. They cite all of the 2*s that end up great players or the 5*s that end up total busts, but for the most part, recruiting services are doing an incredibly difficult job and doing it well. They’re scouting thousands of recruits all over the country and ranking them in such a way that actually holds up for the most part once the players get to college.

The biggest mistake is that people correlate success far down the road with high school rankings. The worst example being the endless articles every year about where first round picks were ranked star-wise. People don’t seem to realize that player development and coaching plays such a big role at that point that their recruiting rankings are almost meaningless 3-4-5 years out when those kids are juniors and seniors in college.

I think he was just talking about in recruiting.

If you have a good class, regardless of the individual players, you’ll be ok in recruiting.

I don’t think even the most ardent UT supporters could argue that UT has done a good job developing players, particularly on the OL.

And at QB.

recruiting is such an encompassing science there is no ONE way to look at it. there are so many variables, so many circumstances that go into a HS recruiting becoming a college star and ultimately an NFL pro.

To be fair,

Auburn should have pulled in two of them, but I don’t think we were ever getting all three just because of playing time. Seastrunk really, really wanted to go to Auburn but the coaches abruptly backed off because of the “recruiting service” scandal. I’m 90% sure he was a silent commit before that happened. Lee just went way overboard with his predictions, but he still had some credibility at the time.

This year, Jeff Lee has lost all credibility because his predictions have been complete dog shit.

With National Signing Day in a week, college coaches are feverishly trying to wrap up their classes and secure uncommitted prospects. That includes Florida’s Will Muschamp, who has taken one unusual step in trying to land Valdosta (Ga.) Lowndes athlete Josh Harvey-Clemons – going to church.

It created quite a stir when Florida’s coach showed up at church last month. "We gave everybody a heads up, and they were surprised to see [Muschamp]," Clemons said. "And the collection plate was equally surprised."

Baylor Bears
Since 2007, 15 wins as less talented team
Baylor’s success in upending teams with stockpiled talent can be largely credited to one superstar. Robert Griffin III was highly regarded for his athleticism when he was recruited, but he ended up in Waco in part because other power programs didn’t peg him as a future quarterback. This past season, his playmaking vaulted him to the pinnacle of individual honors in the sport, the Heisman Trophy, as he led Baylor to seven wins over teams with stronger overall team recruiting profiles.
Like Stanford, a step back will be expected after his departure and Baylor’s long-term outlook in the Big 12 will likely regress. Still, Baylor proved that one special player along with a handful of other motivated overachievers can make a huge difference

Also, I read that someone tried to take him to a 21+ establishment and he wasn’t allowed in. Nice job, Mizzou. I think it’s between Oklahoma and Arkansas, and I think he’ll choose Arkansas. His brother has cancer and his gf attends Arky if I remember correctly, and those would both be major factors in his decision.

Here are their 2011 stats

Completion %
Jones – 63.2
Wilson – 63.2

Completions-Attempts
Jones – 355-562
Wilson – 277-438

TD/INT
Jones – 29-15
Wilson – 24-6

Yards
Jones – 4463
Wilson – 3638

Obviously Jones has more yards and INT’s because he threw over 100 more times than Wilson. Obviously Landry’s decision making is a factor, but it’s not like he’s a terrible QB. I’d probably give Wilson a slight edge, and I don’t think either will be successful NFL QB’s, but there’s not really a huge difference between them. Also, DGB has to think about who his QB would be after the 2012 season. Drew Allen will likely be the 2013 starter for Oklahoma, and I’m not really sold on Blake Bell. Earlier in the seaon an OU player tweeted that Heupel had orignally wanted Allen to get most of the snaps inside the 10, but the idea was quickly nixed because they didn’t want to risk an injury to Allen. While Bell is highly regarded among OU fans, Allen is probably the better QB and he’s probably going to win the starting job in 2013.

I really don’t know much about the Arkansas QB scene after 2012, but I imagine Brandon Mitchell would take over. Either way, I think DGB will go to Arkansas.

From what I hear

and I am sure not an insider, this is what frustrates the coaching staff so much. He wont do the things he needs to do and he just cant participate in much of the offense. The few plays he knows he is very dangerous. They just cant put him out there much.

I am not sure why he doesnt return kicks more. He is real good at that. There may be a reason but Mack doesnt call me very often and explain his decisions

Football recruiting not so cut and dried

True or false: The nation’s top-rated quarterback will never need to call a school. They’ll flock to him. He’ll have his choice of elite programs.

False. There’s local proof amid the words of Hueytown Parade All-American Jaboo Winston.

“The school I’d be committed to now over everyone else never offered,” Winston said. "I loved Texas. I grew up watching Vince Young.
Winston wouldn’t flip to Texas now even if the Longhorns wanted to add a second quarterback to their 2012 class.

“It’s about relationships,” he said. “I dreamed about Texas, but if they came with an offer now I couldn’t consider it. I don’t know those coaches and the time between now and signing day is not enough time to get to know them.”

Eh,

RB I want opportunities behind a good OL. That’s it. I’d guess I’d favor schools that had some history of Heismans, since that seems to boost draft stock.

I don’t understand why good WR recruits go to the SEC.

by GhettoBear04 on Jan 30, 2012 8:49 AM CST up reply actions

i could give a pretty cocky answer here, but note that i am not going for that here.

i think its the competition. whether they believe it themselves or are just following the recruiting banter given to them, thats why the ones who do go to the SEC. its why AJ Green stayed in GA and Julio stayed at alabama. julio couldve gone to a texas tech or aj green couldve gone to a michigan. but both wanted to go up against the best defenses and play against the best defensive backs.

but i agree. if they wanted to boost their own stock and image, go to a playstation offense and catch 400 passes in a year. be that important star player that you might not be able to be in the SEC.

by Mr. Abe Froman on Jan 30, 2012 8:56 AM CST up reply actions

I think a better way to state it

is that being on an elite SEC team likely gives you more publicity. Plus the proximity factor is always in play.

It’s not just about stats, though that is a big factor, it’s also about the development that comes from repetition.

“At first I thought he had false started while I was filming this and just wasn’t called on it with the jump he got on the field. After replaying my video at the meet in slow mo and frame by frame it can clearly be seen that Bracy begins to move the 3rd frame after the puff of smoke from the gun. Since my camera shoots at 30 frames a second, I would estimate around a .1 reaction(or anticipation) to the gun.”

There’s a chance he just got lucky, but jesus that reaction time.

Grantland

on National Signing Day

And then there are the contradictions within our own thought processes. A common one is the praising of a recruit’s character and goods sense3 based on nothing more than his choosing our school. When a recruit is up for grabs, we hope he makes the “right” choice, and if he doesn’t we’ll say: “If he wants to go there, he’s not the kind of kid we thought he was. Him and Rival U will be perfect for each other.” That’s how we do it. We want the kid until he doesn’t want us. Look, kid, you’re gonna do the hooking or you’re gonna get hooked. You’re either a Gator or you’re gator bait. A recruit who selects my school made a well-reasoned decision. If he selected Rival U then he’s been sweet-talked and I feel sorry for him, sorry that he fell for whatever lies and gifts they showered on him. I’m not sure I would want a kid so easily swayed, a kid of such flimsy character, playing for my team anyway.

If my team has a need at corner and a great in-state cornerback decides to go elsewhere, my response is: What’s wrong with these kids? Don’t they have computers? Can’t they see the depth chart? That other program must have given him a Lincoln Navigator and a bunch of gift cards to Chipotle! Yet when a guy who might have to wait a couple years to play commits to my school, that young man is a bastion of wisdom and foresight. Instead of being seduced by the siren song of immediate playing time, he has chosen his new home according to higher concerns. He liked the family atmosphere and the commitment to doing things the right way.

I guess it just depends if Chance Allen gets a commitable offer from the Ducks.

and very rarely do secondary violations lead to anything. coaches self report them all the time. they will go purposefully run into a recruit at a restaurant or something, and then report the violation.

Like Rick Barnes at the UT-Baylor game "accidentally" running into Ricardo Gathers while he was on his OV to Baylor.

Oh yes, Barnes, you were seen.

You're right about them being secondary violations

I would institute a program where those were cataloged appropriately and something actually happened to schools that were constant repeat offenders.

Random question

Does Tennessee still have big boosters? Can they ever become a big program again?

oh yeah they do. money is a problem at tennessee.

they just fired their mens football AD a few months ago and brought in one of our assistant ADs – Dave Hart to become their first “athletic director” (UT never has had an all encompassing, entire athletic programs director). its been a while since UT has had someone at the helm who actually cared about the university, and i think dooley is the right guy, but he is running out of time there. its really tough to recruit at tennessee. you really need some great out of state pipelines; the in-state talent is usually pretty weak. and thats been dooley’s biggest issue. he made a solid hire in getting sunseri from us, but we also took back one of the best recruiters in the country in lance thompson. if dooley can get the right kids, i think he will do fine. but they are not getting it done on the recruting trail. kids just dont want to go to UT as much as they used to.

Kiffin might be my first visit as Infractions Czar.

He’d stop after I shoved my boot up his ass.

And told him that from now on, recruiting infractions follow the head coach.

i know a while ago the AFCA made a proposition to the NCAA to allow

for suspensions and fines to be levied in the event of a secondary violation being committed. not sure what happened to it.

I'd love to see one year of just free reign.

Do whatever it takes.

*Free rein

But by the NCAA or the schools?

Yeah, I'm stupid. By the schools.

Pay whatever you want for players. I don’t think it’s what should happen, but I think it would be interesting to see how it would turn out.
