Heyman: Prince Fielder gets 9 years, $214 million from Tigers
According to Jon Heyman, Prince Fielder has agreed to a 9 year deal with the Detroit Tigers worth $214 million.
This is pretty much out of nowhere...until Victor Martinez's injury, there was almost no talk about the Tigers being in on Fielder, and even afterwards, the thought was that they might look at him as a short-term option.
However, Tigers owner Mike Ilitch has paid big for Boras clients with questionable markets in the past (see, e.g., Magglio Ordonez and Pudge Rodriguez), and it looks like, once again, Scott Boras was right and made his client a whole lot of money.
The Rangers, of course, were supposedly interested in Fielder, but only on a shorter-term deal that would involve some "creativity" on the part of Fielder. I would wager that something along the lines of 6 years, $135 million would have been the very most the Rangers would have offered, and it wouldn't surprise me if they weren't even willing to go that high.

If Josh Hamilton switches agents to Scott Boras, just call off the whole negotiating thing and move the fuck on.
Not worth it.

Well, I’m disappointed but not too broken up about it, the 1b flexibility is a genuine asset (even if Fielder would have been a much bigger one) for this roster.

Well...
I believe that Napoli becomes a free agent in 2013. I haven’t verified that, just what I thought. Could Arlington re-sign him, absolutely. Good Team, good ownership, etc. Will Arlington re-sign him? I’d think Ranger fans would say yes. Signing Fielder would have prevented that.
Napoli provides way more flexibility at the 1st base roll and a hell of a lot cheaper then Cecil’s kid.
That’s all I’m saying.

I don't think Fielder would have prevented signing Napoli.

I don’t see that happening. It would mean Hamilton would have to play a lot of center – Murphy would be the only other backup outfielder to Cruz/Gentry/Hamilton.
I think Michael Young or a midseason trade will have to be the fallbacks if Moreland can’t bounce back.
I'm not talking a starting or every-day type
I want insurance, competition for Murphy, and/or someone to complement Murphy’s skills (someone who kills lefties, runs the bases well, and plays strong defense with positional flexibility) in an ideal world.

I'm hoping Face can work more on his 1st base defense.
I was genuinely surprised that he still looked so bad at the easiest defensive position on the diamond last year, even if it was his first year doing it.
That would make the open position DH, and that’s way easier to fill.
What was wrong with last year's collective team offense?
Why not hope for more health and roll with what we did last year?

I agree with that
If Moreland can just get to around a .780 OPS, I’m fine – that offense looks great.
But there’s definitely risk that last year was his true talent level. Hopefully his shoulder was holding him back.
Hope is not a strategy.

So...
Hamilton swings at more pitches out of the strike zone than Beltre… swings and misses more than Beltre does… walks almost the exact same amount if you remove intentional walks and plays in less games.
But Beltre is the undisciplined, injury prone guy you shouldn’t sign because it keeps you from keeping C.J. and Josh even though it clearly didn’t.

We’re showing how flawed your logic is.
You apply different rules depending on how much you like a player. And you don’t like new acquisitions until they make you.
Just like Napoli’s instructions.
Mostly we’re just burning segments because repeating the same stuff showing how incorrect you are is a way for me to kill time.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
You could probably save some time by creating a
“Josey response” word document. Canned responses to his normal rhetoric.
Beltre's OPS in April was .835 and if
you consider that “great”, Michael Young (.854 OPS) had a great season…and he didn’t break down.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."

Beltre's ROAD ops
In April was over 1.000.
He sucked at home that month.
What does that do to your narrative?
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
So you want to parse Beltre's season

Got it.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."
"You want false modesty? F that."
Here's the difference.
I’m not saying that Young is a “Bichette type” that can only hit at home about the playoffs.
I do not think Young’s playoffs means that he is incapable of hitting in the playoffs. I think it was just the normal ups and downs of hitting.
I also think the SAME THING about Beltre’s down months on the road instead of it being a normal up and down thing and not indicative of what his future performance.
If you’re going to say Beltre can’t hit on the road because of two months dragging down his year in the face of over a decade of success hitting on the road…
Then that logic would seem to say Michael Young can’t hit in the playoffs.
I have never said Michael Young can’t hit in the playoffs.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
You realize there's a vast difference`
in the number of post-season at bats that Young had and the number of at bats Beltre had on the road, don’t you?
Surely you do but you’re treating them equally.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Beltre only had two bad months on the road last year.
May and June.
About 140 PA. The other months were all over 800 OPS.
How many did Young get in the playoffs the past two years?
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
So now it's a two year thing with Young?
I’ll make it easy for you…I won’t criticize Beltre’s ability to hit on the road when he actually hits well on the road.

"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."

False.
The only bat not named Napoli that is going to hit the open market in the next two years comperable to Hamilton is now gone.
This does not mean that the Rangers should sign him to something stupid. But it does, indeed, increase the odds of them signing him to something.
You are better than this Parker.
Signing Prince would have diminished the odds of re-signing Hamilton. Nothing changed today for the Rangers. The odds stayed the same. Think about it.
The odds only stayed the same if you look at the Rangers and Hamilton as a closed set.
If you look at the Rangers options as the universe of available free agents, then the odds absolutely changed.
From the Rangers perspective you see something like:
Big Bat A: Could be Hamilton, Fielder, Kemp, Quentin (just throwing names out there).
That set got smaller with the Kemp extension, and again smaller with the Fielder signing. Assuming the Rangers want to keep the Big Bat A spot filled, then Hamilton is the last remaining option before taking a big downgrade.
Note: I’m not saying that the odds of the Rangers signing a dumb deal have gone up, merely that the odds of the Rangers signing someone to fill that role has stayed the same, with a reduced number of options.
I don't agree with that line of thinking at all.
The Rangers have said they look at every option independently. They will put a price on Hamilton and offer the contract they feel comfortable with. If he says no, he walks.
The odds only would have changed if the Rangers had less money to spend, which obviously isn’t the case based on anything that happened today.
I agree with your methodology, which is why I don't suggest moneywhipping someone just because your options are limited
And while yes, they prefer to weigh things mostly independently, this decision wasn’t one I feel they would.
Most of this board agreed that if Prince signed then Hamilton was gone by default. The same would have been true of Kemp or any other real replacement.
Since none of those signed here, Hamilton is no longer gone by default, thus has an increased chance of signing here.
I do see where you’re coming from, I just don’t think it’s an inclusive enough view.
Where did I ever suggest an action?
Situations and probabilities can change by a changing universe, not just action of the participants
What changed for the Rangers from yesterday to today?
Nothing. They are the same team. One fewer person on the market doesn’t change the the Rangers.
So the disagreement comes down to whether the available pool of free agents has an effect on the Hamilton extension.
I see where you’re coming from with the no, but I’m just going to have to disagree.
It does (potentially) change their upcoming choices, though.
Or are you saying that if Darvish wasn’t going to be posted the Rangers would have handled the CJ Wilson situation the exact same way?
Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.
"I just wanna go gay." - bigtill
Your analogy is backwards
The looming Hamilton extension likely altered the Rangers chances of signing Fielder (although I’d argue the effect was minimal). Similarly, Darvish likely affected the CJ Wilson negotations.
I don’t think passing on CJ affected the Darvish negotations and I don’t think passing on Fielder is going to affect the Hamilton negotiations. I think the chances would have altered if and only if the Rangers would have signed CJ or Prince.
You're misunderstanding my point.
I’m saying that because the Rangers saw Darvish out there, they were less inclined to resign CJ. If Darvish wasn’t out there, they would have been more inclined to keep CJ.
Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.
"I just wanna go gay." - bigtill
Not similar situations.
CJ and Prince signed before Darvish and Hamilton. Use a better example if you want to make a point.
That... doesn't matter to my point?
Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.
"I just wanna go gay." - bigtill
No, you're just completely missing it.
I don’t understand how you can say that nothing external to a team has any effect on what they do. If, for example, Dustin Pedroia and Ian Kinsler were going to be free agents at the same time, and then Boston gave Pedroia an extension, that wouldn’t affect the probability that the Rangers resign Kinsler? That’s… laughable.
Anger logic's so great I kinda forget what we saw in regular logic in the first place.

But they are stuck with him
if you had to choose one to go with youd pick Prince.
But then again if you already have Cabrera locked up for a long time you probably wouldn’t go after Prince in the first place.
Detroit did and are now locked into Prince for the forseeable future. trading Cabrera now looks like the best idea in 2013 when VMart comes back given the return you could get for him. it would also open up money to re-up Verlander who expires after 2014.
Maybe he can be Josh's accountability partner
rimshot
@AdamLikesBeer If you are in Minneapolis I can tell you where to get a good brew.
Oh, I mis-interpreted you, then
But they are stuck with him
if you had to choose one to go with youd pick Prince.
What’d you mean?
Here's the thing.
Cabrera probably gives some surplus value even at 3/$63M, right? But If the team that trades for him is going to have to pay him $21M a year, how much are they going to give up for him in prospects?
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
He's worth a LOT more than $21M per year, right?
He’s probably worth at least $9M in basic economic WAR over contract terms (@ $5M/WAR).
That has to be supplemented by the fact that teams will have the ability to add arguably the best hitter in baseball to a basically no-risk contract.
I bet they’d get a haul.
If you think he can keep putting up 7+-WAR seasons from ages 30-32,
then he’s worth a bunch more than $21M. If you think he’s most likely to come in around 5-6 WAR per season over that time, then you’re talking about $7.5M-$25M surplus over three years. (And, of course, none of this considers any off-the-field issues that might be taken into account.)
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
We can call it 5.5 - 7WAR if you'd prefer, which is 19.5M - 42M over 3 years
I’m not concerned about the off-the-field issues, but maybe some GM’s will be.
$5M/WAR keeps getting cited, but I'm still going with $4.5-4.75M
until there’s more evidence of the sort of inflation that Cameron & Co. expect.
But regardless: if you buy into the Wang model for trade valuation, and add in playoff payoffs and discount future WAR and such, even $31.5M (which is 6.3 WAR, Cabrera’s average over the last three seasons, time $5M, less $63M) doesn’t give you a huge haul.
Now, that doesn’t mean that with new ownership, the Dodgers’ front office (or some other team) won’t overpay for him. But that contract still has to be considered.
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Discounting future WAR should cancel out discounting the future salary
but I agree with the rest of what you said.
Still… $31.5M excess contract value in addition to the rarity of adding arguably the best bat in baseball to your lineup should bring a fairly sizeable haul.
You don't count both the excess contract value
and adding the best bat in baseball.
The excess contract value is what you hope to get for adding the best bat in baseball. Anything less than break-even and you’re overpaying for the best bat in baseball, right?
Garoon: Banned on LSB. Available Only Via Supplement.
Well, $5M / WAR is linear, right?
I might be thinking about it incorrectly. But, the price of a superstar gets steeper as you get to transcendent bat territory, imo.
Oh no.
Here we go again.

It's not that saying linear $/WAR is bad

At $4.5M/ WAR, that’s $79M.

(If you don't just use Wang's value.
If you use Wang’s value, then even using the low side of your estimate, Pineda is worth $16.5M more.)

Yes.
If you’re using the Wang value for Montero, you’re talking a $16.5M value for the Yankees, and that assumes the conservative side of your WAR range.
If Pineda racks up GB’s estimated 23 WAR, add another $20-25M.

by ghostofErikThompson on Jan 24, 2012 2:47 PM CST up reply actions
But maybe a little excited at first?
I think most would put years 6-9 out of their mind and be excited now. I’ve thought about this a lot with the Pujols deal and the lack of angst over the years at HH. I’ve concluded that while I think they are generally irrational over there the reaction probably would have been similar here for most of us if we signed Pujols. I’m sure it is the same with Prince. Especially
Because this is Hicks/ARod all over again. The Tigers really believed that if they offered the same dollars per year at 8 years Fielder wouldn’t have taken it? There’s a good chance 7 years, $166 mil would have still been the highest offer. They added at least 1 year, probably 2 for no good reason.
I think the value ended up about right
But there’s still not a good reason to offer a bigger contract than you have to.
it may have been good
But if we could have gotten him for 10/210 instead of 10/252? Then its even better
I get it.

A player opt out
Does not make a deal better.
Exactly. If he is sucking and not worth the contract
how does having a player opt out improve matters?
And he isn't going to opt out if he doesn't suck either
The point is that a player opt out changes nothing.
Who knows
CC opted out after not sucking
ARod opted out after not sucking
If he could opt out and get another 7-9 year deal why wouldn’t he? In 3-4 years you could have teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Dodgers, all looking for 1B.
This is a pretty specialized case...
Someone who has the chance the Prince does to fall off a cliff after 3-4 years…. I’d be desperately hoping for him to have a monster 3 years and take an opt out rather than play out a 9 year deal.
There is no way he'd opt out after 3 years.

I'm just saying that you're taking on the risk and it's unlikely to be to your benefit.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Risk of a player opt out?
Whats the risk? If somehow he gets the feeling the Dodgers or whatever would beat the remaining 6 years (theoretically with a 3 year opt out), then you lose Fielder while hes still looking good… but ultimately for the better since you escape the bad part of the deal and just got 3 prime years at about his worth which is tough to do in FA for bats.
If he wouldn’t take the opt out, as is likely, then… it didnt hurt anything?
Again, Im not saying Id sign him for a big deal just because there was a player opt out that could get out of it…. but with a guy like Prince I wouldn’t view it as a big negative to have it in there even if its supposedly a favor to Prince/Boras not for the team.
I argued this with AJM awhile back
In theory, Prince only opts out if he thinks another team will give him a a larger contract than he has left with the Tigers.
At that point, it’s advantageous for the Tigers to just trade him to that team.
So ultimately, you are limiting the reward of the contract
Because if Prince ends up giving you 8 WAR per season (somehow), you won’t benefit as much from this surprise upside.
I think that I’d prefer to have the opt-out in there, personally. Especially, if you are cognizant of the fact that you’re giving out a bad contract.
(a) There’s a chance Prince THINKS he is worth more and opts out foolishly.
(b) You know what you’re getting with Prince—he won’t become an 8-WAR player. There might be some tiny chance up upside that you are allowing the player to opt out of,
but imo, when you sign contracts in the upper echelon of contracts, like this, there isn’t much risk in providing the opt-out.
The only thing Id worry about is
if after 3 great years the front office yielded to public pressure to keep him and gave him an extra year ala CC or something.
But I’d trust JD not to do that.
The trading point is a good one.
If Prince would really opt out after 3 years and somehow get even more guaranteed money, his contract should have some trade value.
Any point where both the team and the player would want out of the contract, having the option to trade them is better than an opt out. (Of course, this assumes there isn’t a no trade clause in the deal).
but his height is

In 3 years the market for 1B could be much more wide open

Considering there's no way in hell he'd opt out...
No.

Rangers will try to go MORE Cuban than Mark Cuban.
Since they are eventually changing rules, maybe we should just spend what Hamilton wants on Cespedes, Solar and the Concepcion. Then take our chances. :-)
Anyway, with Olt learning first he can start there in a couple years and then move back over to third when the Beltre contract expires. Or he can just stay at first depending on what each market looks like then or how close our prospects are.
Go Cubbies and Go Rangers!
I can't get a feel on how scouts have felt about Cespedes
but he could be a great source of cheap talent if the Rangers feel he’s worth it.

So
My favorite part of all of this is that not only do the Tigers now have, fat, slow IF, but they also have a pair of slow as molasses corner OF to go with them. So when that ball gets by Fielder and Cabrera, it’s not like Boesch or Young are fast enough to make a fast recovery and hold them to 1 or even 2 bases. Add in a good deal of foul territory, and it’s just hilarity waiting to happen.

I think they can take the Central pretty easily.
I don’t think they were as good as a 95 win team last year… that was several people playing fantastically.
But they’ll still make the playoffs and if you do that… you’ve got a chance.

I would bet most Japanese baseball players and a lot of fans realize that the Majors is the pinnacle of baseball talent. I imagine most are excited to see how he handles the new challenge, while most of the Japanese players are glad they won’t have to face him anymore.

And can you blame him for wanting a challenge, it was way time for him to truly see what he’s made of. Perhaps better choice of words but eh, I think they know he’s telling the truth.

CJ is probably the most likely to live up to his contract in terms of value.

Ok, so $86M for 4 years,
roughly 17 WAR at this rate to break even. If he’s a 6 WAR player over those 4 years, that’s 24 WAR or a surplus value of 7 WAR/$35M.

Yes, although a very tough yes.
It seems like trading Hamilton for Cabrera would be trading risks as well. You are getting rid of Hamilton’s injury risks/relapse potential for Cabrera’s character issues. But you would have 2 additional years of control.
Profar is what makes it tough for me. He is just a prospect, still several years out but his upside and age:league:production potential makes parting with him so difficult.

BYB seems completely unrealistic.
It’s great to be excited about the short term, but if the potential problems with this aren’t readily apparent, that’s just naive. Even for fans.

They also seem shockingly ok with Cabrera at third.

Yeah
Like having Brandon Inge as an everyday third baseman in the lineup.
Obviously there are concerns about the long term. But as of right now, in 2012, I’d say most of us are pretty content.

I tweet about stuff sometimes @jackhitts.
It seems like it has the potential to be sort of awful for them even in the short term...
Fielder is really only replacing an already good hitter in Martinez with perhaps a win or two upgrade. Fielder costs insanemonies. Fielder might underwhelm at Comerica. Fielder is not good defensively. Fielder is bumping a guy who is not good at first to another position where he will be laughably bad. And what do they do with Martinez even one year from now? Just eat his contract? That makes Fielder’s cost even more insane.
I mean, sure, it’s nice to go from probably winning the division regardless of Martinez injury to potentially right back to World Series contenders, but it still could look bad as soon as this season.

But they would have a worse player at a bazillion more dollars to replace him...
That doesn’t really make sense to me either.

They're not trading Cabrera
Ilitch is dug in deep with this team.
by LiamP on Jan 24, 2012 6:27 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
why would he go anywhere?
would we trade cruz or hamilton if we signed prince?
there is still an open dh and dumbrowski said he is interested in cabrera at third
yeh... then too..
wouldnt you wanna pair a killer RHB with a killer LHB? dont trade away your stength.

I do wonder what this indicates about the Texas Rangers’ long-term plans at first base, since they don’t appear to have been in that hard on Fielder or Pujols. Mitch Moreland can’t be the long-term answer at first — he’s probably a platoon bat at best — and they don’t have a good first-base prospect in their upper levels, although they do have a top third-base prospect, Mike Olt, coming up behind Adrian Beltre. It’s not necessary for them to upgrade at first to contend in the AL West, but it seemed like an obvious area for them to target heading into the offseason. Unless Moreland has an unexpected breakout and starts to hit left-handed pitching, it’s probably their biggest untapped opportunity to add a few wins.
I don't disagree...
But you don’t pay $200+ M to solve a problem like that IMO.
Don’t know what the long term answer is… but it isn’t those contracts.

Well, yeah
I think they just pick up another bat to platoon. And see if something becomes available closer to the deadline.

That's an OPS of 785, 766, and 726 in the last three years.
He’ll probably make about $80 million for those three years.

He'll also only have a 33 HR in his best year...
And that’s what drives his value.
He had 24 HR at home last year… given the park factors of 118 for LH HR in Miller’s Park and 88 at Comerica… those 24 would be 17.89.

Even at first base, that pretty much predicts a bunch of 4-5 WAR seasons from Fielder
before his decline.
Even if the deal’s somewhat backloaded, that would severely limit any surplus value Detroit gets from the deal in those first years, which would make the deal overall look pretty terrible.

He is, how you say, 100% correct.

I don't want to add a couple of wins in 2012 by issuing an insane long-term contract.
Weakness-shmeakness. And I think that’s what the Rangers are thinking, Keith.
They’re already a good team. Staying smart and patient will make it easier to stay a good team when cost-effective first basemen are available. And if they aren’t, they’re not worth it. You go after other positions.

I hope mitch comes ready to play...
no more excuses damn it… for all the prospects the rangers have had over the years at first…it sucks having first being one of the weaknesses of the team.
I'd say catcher was much worse
We thought we were stacked with Teagarden, Salty, and Max Ram.

Not sure he's much of an upgrade.

you are prob right...
we have stone hands young and nap…i think i was just in the acquisition mode for the past 3 months and have to realize we are prob done with anything of significance.
Not sure why we'd keep another 1B to play 30% of the time
As a bench bat.

The tigers are making a phillies/yanks/sox move. They are going all in this year when they think they have a chance to win a ws. This is what Steph in Toronto said today he is trying to get to.

Glad it was not the Rangers that paid him that contract….not that I think JD’s offer would have even touched that.

So does this make the Tigers the most overwight team in baseball?
Fielder, Cabrera, D Young… Grounders, line drives, & bunts are going to be interesting to watch. Cue the Benny Hill music!
