Some afternoon linkaliciousness

ANAHEIM, CA - DECEMBER 10: C.J. Wilson wears his new hat and jersey at a public press conference introducing newly signed Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim players Albert Pujols and Wilson at Angel Stadium on December 10, 2011 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

Some stuff to check out as the afternoon is turning into evening...

Sam Miller has an interesting story on the Angels' recruitment and negotiations with C.J. Wilson and Albert Pujols. The Rangers appear to have been a non-factor with Wilson, with Anaheim and Florida showing the most interest, and Florida offering 6 years, $100 million.

Kevin Goldstein has a piece on prospects whose stock rose in winter ball, and both Mike Olt and Tanner Scheppers are among those discussed.

At SI, Albert Chen has a story on the Rangers' tricky situation as it relates to Josh Hamilton and a potential contract extension.

Jon Heyman says that the Rangers and Oswalt "really like each other," but Oswalt would have to agree to "their price," because he's not exactly a fit for Texas.

And Yoenis Cespedes is officially a free agent, which means that teams can begin bidding on him. And if the Rangers think that they are unlikely to keep Josh Hamilton around long-term, they could end up going after Cespedes aggressively as a potential middle-of-the-order bat.

No one heard about our involvement with him, you're right.

I remember following that one pretty closely after news about him started to come out. One day it was just BAM, he signed with the Rangers for a fuckton of money.

I don’t want to impute reasonableness onto MLB when they don’t deserve it, but they handled this Cespedes thing relatively quickly all things considered. It took one day after he established residency for MLB to grant him FA. He only defected in July. I’m sure it was because teams pressured MLB to do it quickly so he could be signed, but still.

Soler came along a few weeks after that, I think it was in late August, so if MLB follows the same pattern (and faces the same pressure), I could see something happening along the same timeline.

Something Badler mentioned in his update today struck me and I hope Soler considers it. Apparently the DR team Cespedes played for briefly is owned/controlled/affiliated with several important government officials in the DR. That might have helped him get residency so quickly.

I wonder if the Rangers front office has automatically deemed Cespedes an over-sign, based on the hype and figures that have been thrown out

I don't think I'd read that Anaheim's first offer to Wilson was 4 years/$60M, prior to this.

Also this is both mildly interesting and entertaining:

It took six weeks of courtship, a choreographed dinner, daily conversations with Garber, a four-hour November dinner with the agent, another dinner at the winter meetings in December, a reassuring phone call from the team’s captain, pledges to support Wilson’s charity, heavy involvement from the team’s manager — “Get it done, Bob,” Scioscia would say when he saw Garber at the winter meetings — and the right geographic location. Most important, it took Dipoto. “If Jerry wasn’t the GM, there’s no way the deal would have gotten done,” says Garber.

The Angels and Wilson

It seems like a lot of their motivation on Wilson, other than the fact that he was the best LH’ed starter on the market, was that they’d be taking him away from Texas.

Do you think they thought twice regarding the logic of stealing away a 31-year old player coming off a career-best year from the Rangers?

My hate continues to grow for CJ. Soon I will forget about all the great regular season games, the 2010 postseason. I will see the Angel logo and seethe hatred, remembering the 3 million walks he allowed in the 2011 postseason, his epic douchey-ness, his over cockyness…

You make these straight parallels on contracts, trades, and everything else

It doesn’t work that way every single time.

And if the Rangers were to trade Holland, they wouldn’t do it as part of a rebuild, they’d want ML-ready players now. Probably 1 ML-ready player. That makes a pitcher-for-prospects trade irrelevant.

if they are signing Oswalt to replace Dutch in the rotation for 2012 they absolutely could be looking for prospects

Especially upper level offensive prospects. Someone who may not be ready for Opening Day but would be ready at some point in 2012 and could possibly step in come 2013.

You are right if they want a ML ready player it wont be the same but just because we are where we are doesn’t mean we wont trade for prospects.

Oakland got back two pitchers who are near ML ready and a catcher who will spend likely all of 2012 in AAA and then be near ready come 2013. So lets not act like what they got back was anywhere near a Tex type package where most of the guys were in A ball or something.

I could see a argument where Hollands lesser cost due to his service time could make him as valuable or slightly more valuable in trade

Gio was a Super 2 whereas Holland isn’t and so in their team control years Gio will cost probably 8-10 mil more than Holland will.

But to my response, Aqua said he wouldn’t trade Holland for anything less than a “absolute stud”. Given what Gio brought back I dont think Holland brings back that. I do think though that if we signed Oswalt we could trade Holland for a package of near ready offensive prospects similar to what Oakland got back for Gio and that wouldn’t be a terrible thing for this organization. Of course all this is theoretical if they signed Oswalt which I hope they dont do.

I can't really see them offering much more then the Cardinals.

This seems like a deal the Rangers would only make if it favors them. An incentive based contract. I think Ryan wants Oswalt, Oswalt wants to be a Ranger and the FO is only interested if it in-turn allows them to improve depth elsewhere.

Byrd is 34, and Marmol is good, but not great (at least consistently so). Harrison is a 26 year old that was really good last year- if you trade him (and if they’re signing Oswalt to take his rotation spot, then they probably should), you need to aim a lot higher than Byrd/Marmol.

Keep thinking of Boston

as a destination for Harry.

They’re still hunting for pitching. Lot of injuries last year, and question marks this year.

They were supposedly interested in Oswalt.

Why wouldn’t they just sign him rather than pay us for Harrison?

Maybe Oswalt really just doesn't want to go to Boston?

I mean, the guy got a tractor written in to his contract when he re-upped with Houston. I’m not sure how well he took to the northeast the past year.5.

I could also be talking out of my ass right now. In fact, this is likely the case.

by ftwdrummer on Jan 26, 2012 1:12 AM CST up reply actions

Harrison's better.

Which raises the question, why would the Rangers trade Harrison?
If this is happening, it’s for either Feliz or Ogando. They could conceivably move Feliz back to the bullpen by saying they didn’t foresee Oswalt being available at that rate, and that it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

I’m not seeing any way they move Feliz back or trade him.

This was my theory
If this is happening, it’s for either Feliz or Ogando

If some team out there sees Ogando as a starter, he could hold a ton of value. Under this theory, they’d keep Harrison and sign Oswalt. Feliz would become the setup man, which he doesn’t care about (no competitive fire! dur! Dur!)
