Sullivan on Uehara and Oswalt
T.R. Sullivan has a blog post up, saying there's a good chance Koji Uehara gets traded for prospects, and also noting that the Rangers see Roy Oswalt as potential rotation insurance, but that "if nobody gets hurt, the Rangers know the situation might get 'messy.' "

So, they pay him $8MM to compensate him for the possibility that things may get messy?
I don’t see how this can’t work!

I'm fine with Oswalt coming to ST on a minor league contract.
Where he either makes the club out of ST and gets whatever guaranteed money ($5M or less please) or we have to release him at the end of ST if he’s not on the active roster.
Basically Dave Bush him with a bit more money.

Heh. Why Dave Bush him at all?
Sure he could bounce back from age and shoulder issues to win a Cy Young this year, but what is the percentage chance of that? Why the risk? Its not like we have Jon Rheinecker slated as our #3 starter.

Because guys get hurt in Spring Training all the time.
If you give him a minor league deal you don’t have to clear a 40 man spot immediately. You don’t have to pay him the guaranteed money unless he makes the team.
If someone pulls a groin a la Tommy Hunter, you have insurance that cost you very little.
Oswalt would have to REALLY want to come here.
Alternatively… if Oswalt looks really good in ST… maybe you’re motivated to trade Harrison and see what you get.
It’s basically all reward and no risk.

Makes sense.
But I think its going to take some guaranteed seepage from the Moneypenis™ to get him here.

Right... I would be SHOCKED if Oswalt accepted that type of deal.

I'd say there is a zero chance Oswalt accepts a minor league deal
from anyone.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
I'm okay with that.
That’s just the only way I would bring him on.

I would think Oswalt would stay up and someone with options like Feliz would go down.
I’m assuming that could be one of the messy parts. However, IF Happy isn’t ready or someone gets hurt, Oswalt is there and the team isn’t scrambling to sign Bush. What happens if Oswalt returns to form? He is a a very good pitcher, and he is used to pitching in small parks. It isn’t a bad move considering he would be cheap and trade-able if pitching well or would allow for a bigger trade of another piece(Koji and Harry for LoMo). There are a lot of facets to this scenario.
I sports hate you CJ.
ill never forget that sunday night game Hamilton took Oswalt to the
nether regions of the upper HR porch… longest HR in ballpark history (minus cansecos roided bombs)

Well, maybe the Prince
But us big guys put a lot more pressure on our ‘trunks’
why the F would he accept that.. when he has offers on the table from Boston and St. Louis

Is the thinking here that Matt Harrison could be a Matt Thornton type in the pen?
Harrison and Gonzalez as your LOOGYS?
Maybe be a mentor for Yu and Neffy?
Harrison in the pen as a LOOGY would be an absolute waste.

Not only is it a waste
but I’m not really sure he will be effective coming out of the pen.

He also had reverse splits last year.

I would have been fine doing 8/190
Which is what the first 8 years of his deal pay him
Wouldn’t have gone 9 years though
The 9th year really makes that much of a difference?
8/190 is still cray

That doesn't make it sane.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I think it's sane to overpay for a player you really want
If Detroit was willing to pay a $46M premium 8 and 9 years from now to ensure they get the guy they want right now, so be it.
Just because he likely won’t be worth that contract in Wang’s $$/WAR calculation, doesn’t make the signing insane, imo.
Insanity
They are already writing articles about whether this will be a Zito/Soriano-level disaster.
Or Pujols-level disaster, hopefully.

I think you can say the same thing about Pujols
but at least both of these players can get some value out of being the DH later in their contract, although that doesn’t warrant the pay.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Agree
And if he’s in fact older than he claims, then it’s even more true
But I give the Angels a bit of a pass on that b/c … he’s Albert Pujols, and he’s been the best hitter of this generation for the last decade. Really, Prince can’t hold a candle to him.
Harrison to the bullpen.
It won’t happen.
If Oswalt comes in, maybe even if he doesn’t, Harrison’s getting traded.
Harrison’s trade value is higher than his BP value, and also apparently higher than the value of Texas’s belief in him in either role.

Why does it have to be Harry who is traded?
He’s pretty well suited for our park. He’s a guy we know very well, and it seems that Maddux and Co. have helped him turn a corner.
Plus, despite what we think of him, I don’t see him valued that highly in the market.
I do agree though that he won’t be shipped to the bully and any signing of Oswalt means the Rangers are working hard on a trade (see below)
Oswalt
First of all, I don’t think the local beat guys for anyone else’s team know what the Rangers are trying to do. Heck, even Evan and Durret don’t know.
But if the Rangers sign Oswalt for anything approaching $8M in guaranteed money, it has to mean that they are working hard on a trade for one of their other starters. Maybe a package deal with one of their starters and Uehara, which if you add another piece like Cruz or Moreland or Olt/Ramirez really starts to look like a nice haul for some team.
Everyone in that front office knows that they need to add offense for the future with Napoli and Hamilton possibly going to FA next offseason and Kinsler and Cruz 2 years out (and on the wrong side of 30), and I think that’s what any Oswalt signing would mean.

There’s some debate in Texas front office over whether #Rangers really need Roy Oswalt, given team’s surplus of starting pitching
