Around SBN: 7 Important Questions About The Heat Vs. Celtics Series

BA: Pre-Darvish, Rangers have #2 system

Got my BA Prospect Handbook this afternoon and don't see any details listed on LSB yet. They Rank the Nats #1 and the Rangers #2, and the book was sent to the publisher before Yu signed. Their 11-31 in the Texas system:

11. Leury Garcia
12. Jordan Akins
13. Ronald Guzman
14. Robbie Ross
15. Justin Grimm
16. Tanner Scheppers
17. Luis Sardinas
18. Luke Jackson
19. Roman Mendez
20. Barret Loux
21. Will Lamb
22. Kevin Matthews
23. Kellin Deglan
24. Jake Skole
25. Tomas Telis
26. David Perez
27. Odubel Herrera
28. Michael Kirkman
29. Miguel De Los Santos
30. Nomar Mazara
31. Zach Cone

Profar's scouting grades are all 55-65 (power and speed are 55). BA also added actual player grades for all 930 players this year, a talent grade and a likelihood to reach ceiling, so that's pretty interesting.

It was pre that as well

A’s were 26 at that point. So, yeah, safe to say that Texas would be #1 now.

Seems to discount the unique nature of

Sardinas’ shoulder injuries in his chat. What does he say in his profile on him about the matter, particularly with reference to any concrete Rangers’ sources.

On the MLB prospect list, the Rangers are doing well with LA prospects.

MLB has 21 LA in the top 100, and the Rangers have 3. That doesn’t sound like much, but there are 30 teams, and the 21 LA prospects evenly distributed is less than one per team.

3 years is also when Profar probably is as well.

So… Leonys, Olt, Profar.

But it’s not as great a place to work. Higher cost of living, and much smaller property with far, far fewer opportunities for someone with a career in mind.

No... that's just how it is.

He’s one year away from free agency. You can get prospects back… but you’re not getting a top ten guy or anyone at Profar’s or Jesus Montero’s level. Certainly not in the Trout/Harper range… nothing gets those guys.

You’d get some okay pieces… but nothing really amazing. I mean… Leonys Martin is a consensus top 100 prospect in all of baseball and you completely ignore him.

You’d get guys around his value or a bit better.

I think you're making too much of Simpson's remarks

He said that personally he’d prefer Hamilton over Fielder. That could mean a number of things, like he thinks Hamilton will both cost less and be a better investment; or Hamilton means more to the local fanbase so he’d like to see him stay — but not at ANY cost.

The larger context of that conversation leads me to believe that Simpson would not trump the baseball people’s recommendations with a fiat to re-sign Hamilton at a higher cost than they recommend.
He wants Hamilton to stick around — as does everyone else. But if Hamilton won’t sign at a cost that makes sense he won’t be here and Simpson won’t stop that from happening if it turns out that way.

I didn't even disagree with what he said.

Beltre missed a lot of games. That sucks. It hurts the team. He was amazing after that, though (and by total contributions, he was fine before it).

Michael Young didn't in September 2011.

Why is that?

Why did Beltre hit the ball well in April on the road and in July?

What kind of pitching was he facing then?

Michael Young actually had to play

It would have been nice to take 6 weeks off and come back fresh to face September pitching but somebody had to lead this sumbitch to the playoffs.

From being a full time player.

We need to make Young a part time player so his hitting doesn’t decline at the end of the year.

That's not an invitation to rip him.

Beltre is a good teammate who works hard and plays good defense.

Does he swing at pitches out of the strike zone too much? Yes… but Josh Hamilton led the team in that last year.

Did he get hurt? Yes. But Josh and Cruz do every year. When Young was the same age as Beltre he hurt his hammy and missed time too.

Yes Beltre had some bad road months which drug his overall numbers on the road down… but that happens. It’s happened to Michael Young many many times with a bad year on the road.

But guess what… Hamilton, Young and Beltre are ALL good baseball players that have flaws. Several overlapping flaws. Some worse than others.

Ripping him is silly.

Neil Ramirez - can you post some if his report?

Mark me down for having him as our top pitching prospect. My understanding is that his top 2 pitches are plussier than Perez. Both need more seasoning and work on command, but right now my take is that Ramirez is more likely to reach his ceiling, which might be as high or higher than anyone else we have in minors.

I havent read the BA writeups but if Parks or Perryman or Cole or Lucas or any others have input as to the now stuff of Perez vs Ramirez it would be great to hear.

Ramirez and Perez fastballs are about the same

Ramirez’s curve is probably a little better when on. Perez’s change is probably a little better when on. Both pitchers flash three plus pitches and I like both of them as prospects. The separator, for me, is not only age and the fact that Perez is left-handed with similar stuff, but it’s also that Perez has been flashing the three plus pitches for awhile now while Ramirez did it for half a season then dealt with the fatigue issues. I expect that he’ll be fine to begin this season, and I think a fully rested Ramirez will be sharp, but the point is that Perez has been flashing that stuff for longer.

yeah

the emergence of the NeRa changeup was a bit of a shocker.

by Goyogringo on Jan 26, 2012 11:32 PM CST up reply actions

You're not kidding

He had zero feel for the changeup in ‘08/’09, a little bit of a feel but still well below average in ’10, and suddenly flashing plus in ’11. First time I caught a glimpse of the changeup was that first Triple-A start against Omaha and I was having trouble believing what I was seeing. Throwing it with good arm speed, creating lots of deception, good velocity, and movement. Honestly, the change may have been there more often than his curve one the fatigue set in during the second half.

by JasonCole on Jan 26, 2012 11:34 PM CST up reply actions

I was going to say that I couldn't think of another TX prospect

who suddenly went from a fringy at best to plus pitch from one season to the next but then there’s Miggie’s change. That suddenly emerged in the DSL but I know you’ve said that you thought he had a decent feel for the pitch at times but still, one more reason not to give up on prospects.

Feldman’s cutter during his breakout year could be another example closer to the bigs I guess…

by Goyogringo on Jan 26, 2012 11:40 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah...

de los Santos had a decent feel for his change in ’07, but it was a completely different changeup he began throwing in the Dominican. In hindsight it really does explain the ridiculous amount of strikeouts he put up there.

You’re right, though. Other than Ramirez and de los Santos, I don’t remember it happening with a secondary pitch. It’s usually a very gradual development and not something that just pops up overnight.

by JasonCole on Jan 26, 2012 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

Francisco Mendoza's slider is actually one

assuming he continues throwing it like he did during the second half of last season. I asked Mendoza what happened to spark his slider becoming sort of a wipeout pitch, and he said Justin Thompson (former Spokane pitching coach…and we all know who he is anyway) simply told him to stop babying it and throw the hell out of it.

by JasonCole on Jan 26, 2012 11:44 PM CST up reply actions

Cool

yeah I remember him as a fringy guy- i mean he’s like a 24yo in A ball – and then you started talking him up all of the sudden- surprise breakout.

by Goyogringo on Jan 26, 2012 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

He was always one of those arm strength relievers worth watching

guys like he and Justin Miller who touch the mid-90s. Sometimes they figure it out, improve command/mechanics and secondary stuff…many times they don’t. Jerad Eickhoff is going to be another guy like that.

In my scouting report on Francisco Mendoza, it’ll include an interview I did with him late last season but never posted. He actually missed nearly a full season after a motorbike accident in the D.R. and was told he’d likely never play again. So a pretty good story.

I know you like N-Mart too. % of chance he spends the next 2 years as a starter?

As an aside, the BA guy who wrote up the Texas system really likes Hendricks too. I already have him pencilled in on my projected roster to tandem start with someone like Font or Henry. Might be hard for him to get innings otherwise…

I've got him at 22.

Still a definite injury risk there, and the ceiling isn’t sky-high. Middle of the rotation ceiling but most likely an innings-eating number four guy. If he stays healthy, he’s a big league arm for sure, but on upside (with health mixed in), I have guys like Buckel, Luke Jackson, etc. above him.

Hmm, it should be harder in high school but not too hard for most.

My guess is a lack of exposure at an earlier age coupled with a lack of immersion (best way to learn a language). And perhaps your brain isn’t wired that way.

I’ve studied 6 languages academically (excluding English) and there are always several people in each class who, despite being very smart, really have difficulty picking up the languages. If you really want to learn another language though, you’d be able to, it just may require a lot of effort. The first additional language beyond one’s native tongue is usually the hardest to pick up, regardless of overall difficulty.

If you had been exposed at an earlier age, it would come easier and more naturally (even if you had forgotten most of it).

Large intuitive leaps really only occur when you are young, or when you have studied at least one non-native language prior to the current language of study (and the more of these you have studied, from what I’ve experienced and heard from others, the more quickly the target language can be gained by said leaps). Even in those cases, there is a whole lot of hard work.

Wow, that is odd.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the learning centers in your brain for assimilating new programming and normal language is the same. Maybe I’m wrong though.

One of the biggest keys for me has been to not let myself get embarrassed when I say something better (like when I told a lady “Good Nachos” on the elevator when I was 12 in Guadalajara), or frustrated when I understand almost nothing or get confused. I’d rather make a fool of myself earnestly trying to speak to another in their language than not try. Perfectionist I am not.

Maybe that is a factor? Do you tend to be a perfectionist?

When I learn, I usually judge my progress by listening comprehension

I don’t think I’ve had much intuitive leaps, but I find that gradually I will start to understand larger and larger portions of sentences. Once you get past a certain threshold, you can understand enough of the sentence that the rest becomes easy due to context. I guess you can call that a “leap”, but I don’t think it’s really something light bulb moment on my part, but just how language is.

by Telegraph on Jan 27, 2012 1:44 AM CST up reply actions

While it is true that

many people have trouble picking up a language later in life, I have also found that students internalize this as a personal limitation when it is in fact the learning environment that poses the biggest obstacle. It ain’t easy to learn a language in a classroom; this is, in fact, the worst way to pick up a language. Immersion is the best way. 6 months to be functional; 12 months to approach competence in all phases; years of practice to master it.

by Goyogringo on Jan 27, 2012 1:34 AM CST up reply actions

You lose plasticity in this regard as you age.

It helps to at least hear different languages at a younger age.

I don’t doubt that you could learn a language if you really tried. Lots of studying/practicing and then immersion…

The crowd cheered, of course. This was the expected outcome. Skyeater had never been defeated, not since Brock had been appointed by Lance as gym leader. But the challenger was ashen. Her resignation came a few seconds later, and the audience along with Brock applauded her accordingly. Her strategy and audaciousness were to be commended, and would have perhaps worked if her opponent hadn’t been a monster who was understandably revered as a physical god.
I looked, and saw that Pikachu was afraid. But…it was hard to describe. There was fear, but the fear was not overwhelming. His teeth were bared and his ears were back. Pikachu was still ready to fight.

And as his trainer, how could I possibly be ready to do less? My nerves settled to the regular vibration of a battle close at hand.

My name was called. The walk to the podium was so quick I could have sworn it hadn’t happened at all. Just a blink, and suddenly I was there, looking out over that long battlefield. Brock looked so small from here. They all looked so small.

My record came up on the big screen. There were a few laughs and murmurs. A few people left, predicting the outcome. That was fine. I wasn’t here to please them.

The podium mic queued once.

“Gym Leader Brock wants to fight.” It was a traditional method of address. “Are you ready?”

I reached up, grasped the lip of my hat, and turned it around.

If anyone's still awake, I want to talk about whether or not we as a board overrate Profar or not

Because in the past two weeks or so, we’ve had two trade hypotheticals presented:

Pineda for Profar, straight up
and
Profar for Miguel Cabrera’s entire contract

And there seemed to be quite a lot of people both times who would’ve rather kept Profar, which sort of surprises me considering where he’s at.

i tell the truth; i lie a lot

by jonthefon on Jan 27, 2012 1:45 AM CST reply actions

I'd do Profar for Cabrera straight up, of course.

The addition of Hamilton is what made me say no. And even then it was a very soft no.

SB Nation Dallas-Ft. Worth - Christopher Fittz is better than porn!

by philkid3 on Jan 27, 2012 1:46 AM CST up reply actions

Yes.

Because Miggy + Hamilton helps put us very far at the end of the win curve.

If you’re giving up Hamilton too… is the upgrade in 2012 and beyond worth the cost of a true blue chip prospect?

The thing with Profar is that he’s already so far ahead of the game in the hardest tool. Young kids with very good hit tools almost always become very good major league players.

And the surplus value in that is very very important.

by Brad on Jan 27, 2012 1:55 AM CST up reply actions

I think there is some question

about how his now hit tool plays up at the upper levels and in the bigs. However, It’s more a question of how productive he can be rather than if he will be productive. Some of that has to do with a relative lack of physical projection (it seems to me at least) but also just the unknowns that come with competing vs a manifestly different skill level. I also think there is some question about his speed; i don’t think he’ll be a burner on the base paths and I’d like to see his him prove to me that being a plus SS without plus range is a reality as it seems a bit counterintuitive. Hopefully he mashes in HighA so we’ll get a glimpse of the answers soon enough.
