Friday a.m. Rangers stuff

Really looking forward to the weekend, you guys.

T.R. Sullivan writes that the Rangers are looking at putting the finishing touches on the 2012 roster, with a Koji Uehara trade a possibility, and the Roy Oswalt situation looming.

Anthony Andro talked to Matt Harrison about the Rangers' offseason.

Richard Durrett's positional outlook continues with a look at shortstop.

Randy Galloway has a column on Josh Hamilton's contract situation and pending free agency. He talks about how Hamilton says he wants the team to be "fair," that there will be no hometown discount, and that Josh's "loyalty is first and foremost to the players' union." Galloway says he thinks "fair" is three years, $60 million, a deal that he acknowledges Hamilton wouldn't take.

Gil Lebreton has a column about the possibility of Roy Oswalt joining the Rangers, and the fact that if Oswalt did come to Texas, it would mean displacing Matt Harrison from the rotation.

No difference

between 3 and 4 really. Ain’t getting it done.

I have a feeling the front office is going to offer 6, which is a bad idea, but it will probably get trumped anyway when someone money-whips him with 7.

Unlike CJ, I think Nolan, et. al. really want Josh back, but won’t throw stupid money at him. Someone else, however, will.

I'm saying that Harrison's value is much higher as a starter than a reliever

If we can’t have him on our rotation because we sign Oswalt, then it is much better for us to trade him at his value as a 4 WAR starter last season. Sending him to the pen (where I’m not even sure he’ll be very effective) is just a waste of his value.

by RangersfaninROK on Jan 27, 2012 9:00 AM CST up reply actions

I agree with that but my biggest concern about Oswalt is his health

Should Oswalt get injured, they would have given up Harrison for prospects and have an injured Oswalt….
I guess this is what I’m trying to say….is Oswalt that much of an upgrade over Harrison? I don’t think he is…

He can be as union loyal as he wants to be

But it Texas has been advantageous to him and his family, then he realistically may want to take that into consideration. He has to deal with the fact that some locations may be detrimental to his addictive problems. As with all players, and indeed employees when they are considering a relocation, some places may not be good for the family. I know he may be a union man, and may want to post a good gain of salary, but he and his family come first. I think there are advantages for Texas keeping him, but too much salary and too long of a contract may cancel out those advantages.

Thats assuming we keep Harrison around through spring training

I believe if we signed Oswalt we would trade Harrison, or someone else, within a couple days.

I dont think the Rangers want to go to spring training with 6 starters hoping one gets injured to clear up their logjam. That cant be good for guys heads.

by bigsteve on Jan 27, 2012 8:55 AM CST up reply actions

I don't think anyone's hoping anyone gets injured

And, yeah, a trade is possible. But when was the last time a team lost it’s division because it had six (or seven) decent to good to great starting pitchers?

My mind just says throw ball throw hard and strike. - Marteen

by Keynes on Jan 27, 2012 9:01 AM CST up reply actions

We have 2 top prospects in AAA

And a former starter as our long man currently

Go sign a veteran to stash in AAA for a month in case a early season injury occurs.

But after how both Holland and Harrison performed last year if we signed Oswalt and brought him to camp with everyone knowing there are 6 guys competing for 5 spots it could fuck with their heads. What more do they have to do to establish themselves as good ML pitchers?

And then if no one does get hurt in spring what do you do? Put one of them in the pen? Fuck no. Send one to AAA as the first injury callup? You’ve lost a lot of leverage in trade since all other teams would know by then you have a roster crunch and need to get rid of someone so you would not get max value back.

by bigsteve on Jan 27, 2012 9:05 AM CST up reply actions

If I were Harry and I got sent to the pen

Pujols OBP is going to be much better than Trumbo's .291 at 1B...not sure where Trumbo fits in 2012.

I would expect Angel C’s to do better than the .252 they put up last year and ditto V Wells (.248 OBP last year).

The Angels team OBP last season was .313

That’s still not going to be enough to push their OBP over .340.

Bad business: Their DH overload trumps Detroit’s, plus Mark Trumbo at third base feels like one of those practical jokes that sounds funny but ends up with someone losing two fingers and his sense of smell.

Those Darvish pictures are pretty cool.

I did not know 10,000 Japanese fans showed up earlier this week to say good bye to him. Cool ceremony. Can YU imagine if the Rangers fans did that for CJ? or Cliff Lee?

by Scruffy Nurfherder on Jan 27, 2012 10:37 AM CST up reply actions

It's different situations, really

Darvish LOVED playing for Nippon Ham. It’s not like he was aching to play elsewhere. More like, it was his team that needed him to go play in the Majors because they could no longer afford to pay him and wanted that posting fee.

Where as Lee and CJ… they just wanted to play for other teams, not for us.

by RangersfaninROK on Jan 27, 2012 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

That picture made me realize just how big Darvish is.

I mean, I’ve been following him from his days in Japan and knew he was no dwarf, but seeing him standing next to Hammy…

And go after Josh’s allegiance to the Union over the Rangers as a first attempt at PR coverage for what we know is likely to happen.

If Josh wants a top end FA deal, he won’t get it from the Rangers.

Well hes still on track to become a FA at 28 or 29 years old so hes not really old yet

But yeah they have really messed up his development IMO the way they’ve used him.

He seems like the perfect candidate for a change of scenery to help him take off.

Sheehan on Cabrera playing 3rd.

Consider only the size of Cabrera; he is currently listed at 240, a number that bears no resemblance to reality. Last spring, in a report by Jason Beck of MLB.com, Cabrera estimated his weight to be about 270 pounds, which seems realistic. Let’s split the difference and say that he can weigh 255 pounds on Opening Day 2012.
