I got that comp from a scout last year

What do you think of Newman?

That's exactly what I thought when I read about his slider.

Man, I keep forgetting that you have to include the Astros when you think about the AL West.

It's deals like this that makenour FO special
Wetherhe pans out or not the scouting department does one hell of a job so JD can ask for a lower level throw in.
Josh Hamilton: "I just show up, look at the lineup and play where I’m told. If they want me to catch, I’ll catch."

I feel like that All State commercial we are in good hands.

Well
Mendez was really the key piece in the Saltalamacchia deal.

True
But they still seem to find good prospects in every trade.

Mendez
He can run his fastball up to 99 mph in bursts; secondary stuff improved in ’11, but his ticket to the majors is the fastball. Most likely a max-effort reliever.
if the Rangers were to convert him over
how quick could he move?

I wouldn't rush the developmental plan
But I think he could move quickly. The fastball is a very sexy pitch, with velocity and life stemming from the quickness of his arm and his extension. The other offerings will flash, but I don’t see the slider or changeup (he will also throw a splitter) developing into monster pitches. With average command and average secondaries, Mendez could make a very good living at the major league level. The fastball is that good. But I don’t think he has the same upside as Matt West, a pitcher with a very good fastball, a very good slider, and very sharp command.
