2011's LSB Predictions In Review (And OT No. 1 if you like.)
tl;dr: Jonthefon wins. Go Jonthefon!
Okay, I meant to do this a long time ago, but, baseball broke my heart. Also, I thought it would take forever, but it didn't, so, here we go.
Here are the standings from our attempts to predict the upcoming season last spring, in a FanPost found here. Lots of fun discussion in the comments there to bring up.
Everyone who put up predictions was compared to how things actually went, then scored by RMSE. So, the farther away you were on the win totals, the worse you did. Simple! Also listed in parenthesis are teams the predictor was within two games of nailing.
Also on the list are several projections from the Diamond Mind Blowout of Replacement Level Yankees Weblog. Note that these are RLYW using others' player projections to create standings predictions. These are NOT necessarily the standings predictions of PECOTA, Oliver, etc. They were easy to find and put in. If someone would like to link me to other standings projections I can plug them in easily and show you where they'd place.
Notably absent is ZiPS. I couldn't find ZiPS. I sent a message to Dan Szymborski asking where to look, and if I find it, I'll put it in. Also included are every team predicted to go .500 and every team predicted to repeat its 2010 record.
Those who made playoff predictions but not full record predictions are listed after. Everyone should do record predictions this season! Predictions are fun and not to be taken seriously, just make BS up.
On that note: Do not feel bad about your predictions because human intuition is not good at this crap! That's why we have projection systems, and hopefully you don't take these things seriously. If you do take these things seriously and did horribly, however, you should feel bad. Hopefully this is not you.

My interest in CAIRO continues.
I’d like to compare it to ZiPS.

Yes indeed
my first thought on reading that was to wonder if Cairo had been that good in previous years.

So where do we make our 2012 predictions?
Should we do it here, or will there be another post at some point?
Also, predicting records takes too damn much math.

Too much can change between now and then.
I’d probably go Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, Red Sox, Angels in the AL as of today. Phillies, Cardinals, Giants, Braves, Reds in the NL.
Yankees over Phillies in the awful World Series.
I originally wrote in just four playoff teams. So weird.

One game playoff every fucking year.
So last year for example, the epic last night of the season wouldn’t have mattered. The Rays and Red Sox would have only been playing for where the OGP would be played, and the same for the Braves and Cardinals.

Because they haven’t hashed out how a tie atop a division affects the tiebreaker game and the wildcard playoff, but it’s absolutely certain for 2013 going forward.

Did I ever tell you about the time I drove the mayor of New York off of Cliff in a subway car?
Well, it was the summer of 2009.
They mayor and I were dedicating this subway car when a mad terrorist scientist hit us with a shrink-ray. In the commotion somebody kicked on a giant fan, and we got blown out of the subway on to the street above, where the breeze blew us to Yankee Stadium, where Cliff Lee was just exiting the field after the bottom of the first. Cliff took his hat off in the dugout, and we landed on his head and got stuck.
Long story short, I realized we had to get off Cliff’s head before he put his hat back on, or we’d be killed. So, I made a rocket out of the fire extinguishers on the subway car, and drove us off Cliff’s head. Unfortunately, we landed on a sandwich CC Sabathia was in the middle of eating, so we had to get out of the subway car, and get off the sandwich before he ate us.
The mayor almost got stuck in the mayo, but I got him out in time for us to jump onto CC’s belly. His fat cushioned our fall, and we made it out of the dugout without further indecent by climbing onto one of the phone lines attached to the bullpen phone.
After that we had to trek all the way to the Federal building to get unshrunk, but that’s whole other story.

I found a website that appears to have used Diamond Mind and ZiPS to create a forecast.
Haven’t looked at entirely how it did its work, so I’m not including it on the list.
http://darkfloworg.fatcow.com/2011%20MLB%20ZiPS/index.htm
But, it’s final RMSE is 8.961, placing it just behind PECOTA for third. It was close on the Giants and Rangers. Out of interest, it was also only nine games off on the Twins, which is by far the closest of anyone or anything listed here.

Oh, that guy’s just doing a seasonal projection using the disk, not doing it a thousand times.
Preseason, I just have the ESPN run, problem is that was done at end of February.
I meant to do another run at the very start of the season, but I was so busy scrambling to get the disk rosters updated that I didn’t get to it.

I'm pulling what they did last year versus their career numbers and age.
To see how many guys had career years. My guess is that heavy regression back to career numbers (or slightly worse for old guys like Hunter, Wells and Abreu) is what’s happening. I know Weaver and C.J. had career bests last year.

Do you think Napoli is a true talent 1.044 OPS player?
I think he’s a good hitter with an .873 career OPS. I would expect him to put up between an .880 to .920 OPS next year.
How is a 1.044 OPS anything BUT a fluke? You think he’s going to put up 1.000+ OPS seasons from here on out?
This is an amazing turnaround from a guy who YOU constantly brought up his .316 OBP in 2010.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Napoli's 2010 OBP seems to be the big fluke in his career.
He was a rock solid .350-.374 his first four seasons in The Show…put up a .316 in 2010 followed by .414 last year…what’s halfway between .316 and .414? …it’s .367 (snugly within his career .350-.374)
He came to Arlington and went nuts. Maybe it was because he didn’t have to carry the offense (but he did at times) or was happy to be away from Sosh…who knows?
Napoli is a legitimate hitter…freaking 1078 OPS on the road…better than his numbers in Arlington (1011).
I don’t expect Napoli to be better in 2012 but I certainly expect his OPS to be between .900 – 1000.

Here's some fun.
When KOK asked about Josey’s earlier comment that Napoli comes with instructions, Josey was able to clarify with:
No.
It means Napoli has to be used very carefully.
The more at bats he gets, the more he’s exposed and the worse he does.
Old School Brutha is doing a good job of spoonfeeding Napoli his playing time.
And then:
If Napoli could be counted on to play every day, it would have happened before now.
I also doubt the offensively challenged Angels would have shit-canned him to Toronto if they thought he could play every day.

Don't forget about the 2010 OBP
And when Napoli received more than 500 plate appearances
he put up a .316 OBP.

Also
I look at Napoli’s career record and it
tells me he’s much more effective when he is spoonfed playing time.
Young has never been spoonfed anything. He goes against everybody while Napoli has to be protected.
If Napoli isn’t protected and gets 510 plate appearances, he STBF with a .316 OBP.

What was it I specifically said about Koji?

Babbling about him being the
best reliever (along with Adams) we could have required…gushed about his control and not to worry about him not throwing 97 mph.

Here you go...
“Things didn’t work out and now we’re addressing it. And Koji is a pretty easy "probably" given his 1.6 years of bullpen work has been nearly identical and among the best in the majors. Did you read Joey Matches article? Koji is literally the best reliever we could have acquired outside of Mike Adams… and it’s very close with with him and Adams.”
“That’s what I meant when I said he wasn’t your type of player.
If he had identical numbers with a 97 MPH fastball you wouldn’t sweat it.
Pinpoint control is pretty valid."

Perhaps it’s a personal failing but I’m skeptical when it comes to the Deceptive Japanese Con Man routine."
Deceptive Japanese Con Man is not racist when it comes to assessing a pitcher.
It refers to the wild ass deliveries, upsetting a batter’s timing, different arm angles, wide variety of pitches.

That doesn't sound very specific.
But HR aside… Koji pitched great. He struck out a ton of people and walked almost no one
11.5 K/9 while he was here and a 0.5 BB/9.
Now… saying HR aside is like asking Mrs. Lincoln how she enjoyed the play.
He didn’t adjust very well.

To make the team better, either via acquiring more talent or freeing up salary dollars. Kind of like they did recently with another player.

Then you think his 2011 was a fluke too.
Because if you thought it was legit… you would project a 1.000 to 1.100 OPS.
Instead you are expecting it come down… because you know it is unsustainable… I think you’re a little too optimistic. Everyone else said the same thing about Josh after his 2010 and he had a sub .900 OPS. Do you think Napoli is a better hitter than Josh?
I have said many many many many times to YOU in defense of Napoli that I think playing here in our environment for Wash instead of Sosh was what helped him be him.
I think Napoli will hit very well… but a 100 to 200 point drop in OPS (which would be .944 to .844) is MASSIVE. If you expect his OPS to drop as almost a certainty… you’re acknowledging it was a fluke.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I do not think his 2011 was a fluke... you do.
There’s nothing about last year that I can question about his 2011 that doesn’t make me think he will repeat his badassery.
Now, if he’s still injured, that could be a problem but I don’t look at his 2011 as a fluke at all.

If you think he'll repeat his badassery
Why is your projection range anywhere from 44 to 144 points lower than what he did last year.
The top of your range isn’t even what he did.
If Josh Hamilton has a 44 to 144 point reduction in OPS his range would be .738 to .838.
That’s a massive reduction.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
I'm not sure how many games Napoli is going to play
in 2012…he was in a semi-platoon the first 3 months of the season and was also hurt.
Josh going from .838 to .738 is much different than Napoli going from 1044 to .999.
A .738 OPS is shitty to mediocre while a .999 OPS is still Trust Tree Elite.

I have never said Napoli wasn't a great hitter.
Maybe you just don’t understand what I mean by fluke…
When I say that… I mean his numbers will almost be guaranteed to go down. That’s all. For the reasons that you point out.
When I do my player projections, either Josh or Napoli will have the highest projected OPS.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Napoli probably touched his ceiling last year but we don't really know that.
How often have we seen a great Rangers hitter be better on the road than at home?
I’d have to look at ARod’s #’s but Napoli must have set a record for the Rangers highest road OPS last year.
A 1078 road OPS is fucking sick.

pretty good synopsis of jerry's nfl network interview
love this part…where everyone initially took calvin watkin’s word as gold…uhm, no.
Most of you are aware that on Monday Jerry Jones explained Eli Manning was the reason for the Giants’ success this season, and how he was the difference in the games between Dallas and New York. Furthermore, I’m sure most of you are aware, that Calvin Watkins took his quotes out of context, cherry picked a juicy line, and fabricated a controversy that Jerry Jones was throwing Tony Romo, much maligned star Quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, under the proverbial bus.
I would hope by now, those of you who know about that story, also took time to see the comments in their entirety at the mothership, and understand, that at no point Jerry badmouthed Romo. If you still think Jerry badmouthed Tony Romo, let me summarize for you what Jerry Jones said. Jerry Jones said that the quarterback position, for the Dallas Cowboys, was not a position needing much improvement. Jerry Jones felt, that Tony Romo was playing at a level similar to Eli Manning; meaning Tony was playing like a playoff caliber QB. Jones went on to say, indirectly, that the rest of the team needs to play at as high a level as Tony Romo before the Cowboys can start to jell like the Giants. More specifically, Jerry hinted that changes will come to the secondary, the offensive line, and possibly the pass rush and or defensive line as well…

As a reminder...
This isn’t who Vegas thinks is most likely to win the World Series. It’s a reflection of how people are betting.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
It's a bit more complicated than that.
"I have thought a lot about why people get so hostile online, and I have come to believe it is primarily because we live in a society with a hypertrophied sense of justice and an atrophied sense of humility and charity, to put the matter in terms of the classic virtues." --Alan Jacobs
Sure.
But the important thing to know is that Vegas doesn’t want to be right… it just wants to make money.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
This is not like trying to get actions on both sides of a game so they make money.
If their opinions (odds) are out of whack, they’ll get killed so there’s quite a bit of opinion with these odds.

They expect to make money no matter who wins.
And they adjust their odds accordingly. Only one team can win the World Series… they cash in on all the other bets.
They adjust all of them based on a combination of how likely they think the teams will do, but will also adjust based on action.
I bet there were a ton of bets on the Angels after they got Pujols and C.J.
