Really hoping Profar would develop well
If he doesn’t, we’ll be in a mess when Elvis nears FA. Decent SS are hard to find these days in the open market.
Knowing he has an insane floor, it’s not like I worry too much but still
by RangersfaninROK on Jan 28, 2012 11:56 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
MLBTR has a new tool: Extension Tracker
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/extensiontracker
For all SS with less than 5 years service time:
Tulo signed a 6 year $31M when he was still 2 years away from arb after 2007 as a 23 year old
Hanley signed a 6 year $70M when he was 1 year away from arb in May 2008 as a 24 year old
Alexei Ramirez signed a 4 year $32.5M with an option year a year ago as a 29 year old.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver
Let's predict his arb
2012: $3.2M
2013: $4.9M
2014: $6.6M
He’d be heading into his age 26 year as a free agent. I’d guess he’d get something like a 7 year, $91M if his power and average don’t improve. Teams don’t pay as much for speed and defense. That’s $13M AAV, so:
2015: $13M
2016: $13M
2017: $13M
That’s a total of $53.7M total. If those figures are close… he might sign a 6/$50. That doesn’t give the Rangers much of a discount, and it lets him hit free agency after his age 28 year heading into age 29.
I’m a little conflicted… I don’t think it gives the Rangers enough of a discount for taking on the risk of him getting hurt… but I also think he’s worth more because of how undervalued speed and defense generally are in FA $.
If you think there’s a chance his bat goes up a level… then you 6/$50 starts to make a lot more sense because if he ever developed significant offensive capabilities those prices go up dramatically.

Let's revisit his statement
How much faith do you have in the Rangers’ front office?
“I believe them and trust them. They’ve done a lot of work. But it goes back to the theory of are you in a sports organization to try to second-guess them. We don’t do that.
“You’re much better off getting real people that know what they’re doing rather than calling plays behind them. If you think you can improve your management personally as an owner, you need to get somebody else and not try to do it yourself.
That’s where I disagree with the owners that are so proactive and involved technically. It’s like, knock yourself out if that’s fun for you. That’s in hobby area. Here you get the very best people and support them. We were fortunate in that we had such superb staff when we bought the thing that we’re not reinventing anything."

Are you thinking of a different Rico Carty?
He walked more than 68 times in a season exactly once and played in The Show until he was 39.
At the age of 38, Carty put up an .850 OPS.
Rico Carty is listed as the second most similar hitter to Josh Hamilton.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
"Don't become the '82 Milwaukee Brewers."

Walk rates are pretty different.
Rico Carty’s career walk rate is 10.2%. If you remove IBB, it’s 9.1%
Hamilton’s career walk rate is 8.1%, if you remove IBB, it’s 6.8%
That’s very different. Hamilton’s never had a season where he had a 10% walk rate… Rico Carty did 7 times.
And Hamilton’s walk rate is trending down. Last three years it’s been 7.2% and 5.8% if you remove intentional walks.
"I became an optimist when I discovered that I wasn't going to win any more games by being anything else." by Earl Weaver

What's your biggest imaginable contract from "Mystery Team"?
by blakethegr8 on Jan 28, 2012 12:12 PM CST up reply actions
This really is a crucial question
If he spends another 40 days on the DL, I can’t see him banking like he wants to.
He needs to do what Reyes did, and even then—Reyes only received 6/102
I’ll be surprised if Hamilton gets a 6/130+ contract, but who knows. Hopefully he’ll put up another 8.5 WAR season and prove me wrong
Reyes sounds like a really good comp to me.
A player capable of producing as well as anyone offensively and capable of playing good defense at a premium position, but who has trouble staying on the field.
My sentence sucks, but hopefully yall know what I’m trying to say.

It really depends on next year.
If he repeats 2011, missed 30 games has about a .900 OPS… then 7/$160 is the big money crazy contract I think.
If he stays healthy for a full year and has an MVP-ish season… 8/$200.

There’s only one baseball team with a full-time chaplain on the payroll. Only one whose team executives are known to hold prayer conferences over the phone. This season they even had a “Faith Day” for fans, featuring Christian bands and players professing their love of the Lord. They’re your Colorado Rockies: National League pennant winners, and World champs when it comes to mixing baseball and God.
A May 2006 story in USA Today first detailed the Christian imprint on the Rockies, whose 21-1 run on the way to the World Series brought a historic high to Colorado. “I don’t want to offend anyone,” Rockies chairman and CEO Charlie Monfort said at the time, “but I think character-wise we’re stronger than anyone in baseball. Christians, and what they’ve endured, are some of the strongest people in baseball. I believe God sends signs; we’re seeing those.”

At 15
You’re starting to include guys like Zobrist, A-Gon, Teixeira, etc., that I think are no-doubt All-Stars, but I’d hardly label game changers.
This is all subjective, obviously
Hmm. Going through it, I might agree with Adam
Here are the guys I would consider no-doubt, elite position players.
Kemp
Bautista
Pedroia
Braun
Cabrera
Votto
AGon
Tulowitzki
Longoria
Pujols
It’s easy to come up with another five who could be counted, though.
Ellsbury — possibly best player in baseball last year. Needs larger track record.
Granderson — Again, inconsistent. But fantastic.
Upton — great, and incredibly young — likely to sustain if not improve.
Reyes — phenomenal when healthy
Hamilton — Same problem as Reyes
McCutchen — On the cusp and very young.
Kinsler — How much do you buy the defense and baserunning numbers?
Fielder — How much do you buy the defense and baserunning numbers?
Etc etc

Well put on Fielder and Kinser--polar opposites in that regard
I should have included Pedroia, but I didn’t want to.
Kemp, Hamilton, Granderson, and Ellsbury’s WAR’s jump all around—- I don’t see that as belonging in the same category as Pujols or Longoria
Kemp is entering his prime, and while his .380 BABIP last year was nuts, his career mark is .350, so I think he’s pretty safe to include int he elite category.
I call an ace
A pitcher who can put up 5.5 WAR year after year.
I would call a superstar position player someone who can put up 7.0 WAR year after.

Totally agree
the year that he put up last year as a 21yo was very good considering he didnt show the patience that he did all throughout the minors. I think that his walk rate will increase this year because he will have a year under his belt. Additionally, if im not mistaken with his BABIP at .314 he wasnt all that lucky either correct?

That's normal I believe
He’s going to be awesome
I think if you include Prince, you have to include a lot of other players
And Ellsbury and Kemp were game changers last season, but I’d want to see them do it for a few more seasons before they receive the label.
Josh is too inconsistent.
Reyes and Tulo are good ones, but they are injury prone—not sure if that should count or not.
I think you and I are on the same page for this
I think one needs to show elite performance at crucial moments consistantly for a period of time before he can claim himself to be a game changer. According to my definition, I see around or less than 10 of those in the game.
