Sunday morning Rangers stuff

Quiet Sunday.

Richard Durrett writes that Matt Harrison's is aiming at building on last season's success.

Gerry Fraley says the Rangers are supposed to meet with Roy Oswalt on Monday, assuming he's still a free agent then.

The S-T has some notes on the Ian Kinsler contract situation, Matt Harrison focusing on the rotation, and the signing of Kyle Hudson.

I've gotta go on record with this...

I will rage if Harrison is moved to the bullpen….he’s earned his spot to start the year…and I really don’t trust him in the bullpen, he makes me nervous.

Oswalt

I have read so many takes on this over the last few weeks. I didn’t want him. I still don’t really. But. It seems like we should prepare ourselves for his arrival. Maybe he’s trade bait in July. Maybe he saves our ass because two injuries spark-up in March? Is there a bright side? I hope so.

What does this mean?
the Texas Rangers extended their rights agreement with Fox Sports Southwest, reportedly for $1.6 billion over 20 years and an ownership stake in the network.

First time I’ve seen that the Rangers have an ownership stake in the network….anyone else?

Also, we see the 1.6 bb # again…I wonder if Maury is saying it’s 3bb b/c of the ownership stake.

Right

The guess is $3B includes the future value of the ownership stake. NESN and YES seem to do well for their teams so this is a step in that direction.

On that point, I presume the ownership interest doesn’t end at the end of the 20 year contract so the long term benefits could be more than $3B.

Football can go to hell. The Rangers aren't ready for football season and neither am I.

by WyoRanger on Jan 29, 2012 2:32 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

$1.6B is the contract price. $3B is likely the estimated total value of the 20 year contract.

Whether the $1.4B is present value of future earnings or just the actual estimated future earnings I don’t think we know. But time value of money can be easily calculated.

Football can go to hell. The Rangers aren't ready for football season and neither am I.

by WyoRanger on Jan 29, 2012 3:00 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

The unknown contract terms are the reason for all of the confusion, we don't know whether its 1.6B or 3B.

Of course it is easy to calculate time value of money; my point is that if this is a 20 year/ $3B contract, it should be reported as such, not discounted to 2012 dollars.

Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

what principle measures for baserunning and position defense are worth noting besides
total zone and plus minus. Are there any other baserunning measures besides the one used by fangraphs?

Also, are there any rough attemps to measure (that most difficult of profiles) “catchability” that have proved useful over the last few years, useful attempts at an appraisal like plus/minus?

Catching is very hard to quantify just by #s

The four biggest variables that make it hard to correctly the position.
(1) The Pitching staff may be full guys who throw a high % of breaking balls in the dirt.
(2) A pitcher (or two) on the staff may be VERY EASY to steal on.
(3) A catchers reputation for having a cannon can prevent people from running.
(4) A catcher may play in a division that has an inordinate number speedsters than other divisions.

These TV deal #s have to be BS...

I don’t have a TV or Sports management b.g., but in ANY business, it makes ZERO sense that two business entities would lock themselves into a fixed revenue deal that lasts 20 years. 15 years from now, the Rangers could be a regional juggernaut bringing in HUGE ratings from El Paso to New Orleans, or we could be a pale shadow to the mighty Houston Astros while the Rangers don’t have any viewers farther south than Waxahachie.

Somehow, someway, there are TV viewership triggers that can lower or raise the Ranger’s revenue. My guess is, the $3 Billion is just an estimate the two sides agreed to. Fox has every incentive to make the deal look huge to boost their stock, but the Rangers don’t really have much reason to be open about it, as it does no good to let the competition know what your revenues (and thus payroll #s) will likely be in the future.

I doubt the CIA or the NSA could figure out the Rangers Financial arrangements, but Fox News Corp. is a public corporation. A well-versed stock analyst ought ot be able to get to the bottom of this by digging through the Annual Report.

The fact they’re paying more infers that they’re expecting greater revenue growth in the future. If Fox said the Rangers would be getting less $, the inference would be revenues are not expected to rise much.

It doesn’t take much to, as an analyst, compare deals made in other markets to the Rangers deal. Overpaying significantly would hurt the credibility of management and the value of the stock.

The Rangers obtained an ownership interest in the RSN. As such if it makes a ton of money off the Rangers the Rangers make a commensurate amount. $3B includes an estimate of the value of the ownership interest.

And thus, he’s not incline to burn a source.

I don’t have or need sources, and I know, regardless of the business, prediciting market values on a product 20 years out is complete guestimation. Older viewers tend to die, and the up and coming viewers are tech savy and might watch the games in differnet ways, MLB.TV, pirated satelite feeds on the internet, etc. Nobody knows what the TV market (or baseball, or the Rangers) will look like 10 years out, let alone 20.

by Heebs on Jan 29, 2012 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

I'm just guessing but I'd think Elvis gets ~$20MM over the next 3 years.

So his extension portion would be roughly $10MM/year. Is that unreasonable? I don’t think so.

by Heebs on Jan 29, 2012 2:50 PM CST up reply actions

I had it in yesterday's thread.

I predicted (going from memory, may not be exactly the same):

2012: $3.2
2013: $4.9
2014: $6.6

And then I predicted a 7 / $91M contract for him in free agency as long as his power and average numbers don’t take another step. Speed and defense doesn’t get the big bucks like dingers does.

So like $53M over the next 6 years.

I don't see much of a reason to believe he'll develop much offensively

At least not enough to expect him to be much more than a $12MM player.

I wouldn’t be bent out of shape at that contract though. Even if doesn’t improve dramatically from what he is now it wouldn’t be much of an over-payment (if at all). I’d applaud the move.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with any of those I mentioned. KOK, Aqua, you, Gdawg, bigsteve, Jobu and JDT217 are all fine posters that I’m glad are here.

That wasn’t meant to call you out as to point out other posters that are part of what makes LSB a great place do the same thing.

I don’t think arguing with Josey is the end of the world. Especially since most of the serious meltdowns of people getting really vicious has been curtailed.

And I will react here in ways that I cannot and would not in my professional or personal life… as do most people. It’s a common aspect of the internet.

I don't think I've questioned any of that.

That doesn’t change what I meant, or whether it’s true for me.

I view LSB mainly as a social outlet. I’ve made some real-life friends here. It’s easy enough for me to choose to spend my time in other ways, if I stop enjoying it as much, but I’d miss it. There seem to be others who feel the same way. You may not care about that at all, and that’s your call.

Regardless, I do think you’re fooling yourself if you downplay how much you’re seen as an official part of LSB, now. The hullaballoo around AJM announcing a new writer should’ve been an indicator…

Taillon seems to have done nothing to diminish his status as a high draft pick

I know he was a Top 10 pick a while ago. It is weird to see a guy younger and less experienced jump ahead of him.

Although as a throw away comment I don’t think Top 10 in one draft automatically makes that person better than Top 15 in a different draft. Not all drafts are equal.

Seems pretty foolish to me.

Considering establishing major league talent is routinely traded for high-upside pitching talent. That suggests that pitching potential has value, potentially great value, to major league ball clubs.

Why would talent evaluators ignore routine major league practice?

Not sure anyone actually believes there is NO such thing as a pitching prospect.

To draw a parallel...

Low probability investments typically have the highest potential payoffs, to compensate for their risk. High probability investments typically have the lowest potential payoffs, since they carry less risk.

A GOOG option carries a high price, even though it has a low probability of payoff.
