Tuesday Morning Rangers Update

Players to homer in two World Series for the Rangers: Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, and Mitch Moreland

Good morning.

Richard Durrett writes a bunch of New Year's Resolutions for the Texas Rangers franchise.

Evan Grant has a blog post up with storylines from 2011 that shouldn't carry over to 2012. A big Yay to no more "That's the Way Baseball Goes" song, a big Nay to ballpark sushi.

Finally, Joey Matches sort of writes about Prince Fielder and the Rangers but it's really more about playing time if the Rangers were to sign a "Mysterious First Baseman That's Too Awesome To Bench."

Come on, today.

I need a signing. Doesn’t have to be the Rangers, but something of substance to talk about would be nice.

$60M seems a little low

unless he is not counting an optional 6th year

The Rangers will sign Darvish, just before the Jan. 18 deadline, to a five-year deal worth $60 million, and they will be happy to pay the money, because Darvish should be able to beat Matsuzaka’s rookie-season 4.40 ERA in 204 2/3 innings — though he won’t win the AL Rookie of the Year.

Surely that was in jest.

Why can’t you like Michael Young without trying to prove that he’s the best player on the team. My favorite pitcher is Holland. It’s not because he is the best pitcher it is because I just like him. I like his potential and I think he is quirky. Same with Beltre. He wasn’t the most valuable player on the team but I like him. The fact that he’s my favorite player doesn’t make me feel the need to always prove he’s better than (insert whoever here). So why can’t you just like Michael Young without feeling the need to make everyone agree that he’s God’s gift to the Rangers?

Who's your all time favorite Dodger?

You’re originally a Dodger fan, right? I went to their Stadium recently and thought the history there was awesome. So who’s your favorite of all time and why?

I have several...not sure what to do

with Jackie because he never played with Los Angeles but he may be one of the most important Americans ever and he could play some baseball.

Loved Koufax (but never saw him play), Lopes, Cey, Reggie Smith, Orel and Kirk Gibson.

I still like the Dodgers and root for them but not as passionately as I root for the Rangers.

I was thinking the same thing about Jackie.

It seems the org celebrates him so he counts. Down in the depths of the stadium they had all these cool pictures from Dodgers moments. The huge photo of Jackie stealing home was my favorite. I not even a casual Dodgers fan but it was cool to be around that kind of history.

Incidentally the wife and I tried to see Angels stadium that day. We were in full Rangers gear and the parking lot was packed. In December. Yep, we pulled up during the Pujols/CJ press conference… Missed that it was that day in the blackout of our vacation.

Thanks for responding btw. It was a genuine question.

I think Yu Darvish is going to be average to slightly above average.

Initially he’ll be somewhat successful (he’s new to the league, talented and confident) but then there will be video on him. And then it’s going to get real hot in Texas. And then he’s going to get hit in the mouth and have to deal with failure at the big league level under the weight of that investment.

I’m not rooting for this move to fail. I just don’t think he’s worth a $ 100-120 million (or maybe more) investment.

He's got some provocative ideas out there. Not well researched, perhaps.

I agree that 94 wins will take the west.

I also think Yu will have a better rookie season than Dice-K. I think the reasons are that the Rangers have surrounded him with every conceivable advice-giver/mentor he could want, and they’re convinced through discussions with Yu that he will take advantage of them.

Colby provides some thoughts on shifting the workload from 6-day to 5-day.
The bullpen guys use help with being a familiar face and speaking a familiar language.
He wants to continue to be a Japanese star as opposed to someone who jilted Japan? No problem, Colburn keeps Yu’s marketing presence healthy in Japan.
Want to discuss pitching tactics with all-time greats, raise his game to another level? No problem.

Yu, and what he looks well positioned to do on the mound the next 2-3 years, feels to me to be as much of a landmark as the Rangers first two WS appearances.

http://espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/story/_/id/7419134/japanese-pitcher-yu-darvish-visiting-texas-rangers

Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish is in Arlington with his father to take a look at the area and get a better sense of the Texas Rangers organization.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels confirmed Darvish was in town following reports in the Japanese media emerged Tuesday. But that does not mean an agreement is imminent.
