OT CFB: NATIONAL SIGNING DAY THREAD

I figured I'd get this up now, because there's always good rumblings the night before NSD. This is your official thread to hate on other schools' commits, lament in your own, and ask which SEC shcool had the deepest pockets this year - trick question - it's always Auburn.

Drop tweets, shoot out the rankings, mumble what you'd like, REC THIS BABY UP, be yourself, and as always.......

RABBLE ON!

(This thread dedicated to the loving memory of the James For Senate '12 Campaign.)

So

Looks like DGB to Mizzou. He would have looked good in burnt orange. The tigers got a great one there. I hope they put in a decent turf so he doesnt tear his knee up like several did this tear in Columbia.

We've talked about this before

but there doesn’t seem to be any evidence that the Tigers field resulted in any more injuries than normal.

Good

That stuff was gruesome. Especially later in the year. I accept injuries as part of the game but having major injuries because of worn out turf that should have been replaced sis not acceptable

EJ would need to get a lot better at his intermediate reads to utilize the TE. Quote from SBNation on Mickens/comparisons

But the Huskies do run multiple-receiver sets quite often, and Steve Sarkisian’s offenses have never been shy about throwing to short guys who make things happen in space (see: Bush, Reggie).

Is it really accurate to call Reggie Bush short, he is listed as 6’0" and even if he was 5’11" or so it would still make him 3 inches taller then Mickens.

I have no idea, to be honest.

The BearsTruth guys are just protecting their sources, and I’ve been told (by someone that would know, whatever that means to you) that the coaches are playing this one as close to the vest as ever before, but the kid is blabbing about it all over twitter.

There are two things at play with this kid, one of them being that he’s best friends/BFF with a top 2013 recruit, the other being that the coaches believe this kid would have been recruited by every program in the state had he gotten his academics in order before his senior year.

I don’t see the kid switching at this point, so I’m not sure why they’re being so protective.

At the safety position, he absolutely makes up for Pope.

Ed was way too skinny for safety, and blossomed as a WR, which is where TCU had him slotted like every other college. Obviously, Ed is a take no matter what, but losing him at WR doesn’t hurt as much as losing Daje at CB. Especially since we apparently struck out on Blake too.

Texas Tech unveiled a matte black and a silver helmet to 10 recruits and the commits had favorable things to say about the Red Raiders’ new equipment.

The silver helmet came almost completely out of the blue because silver isn’t a Texas Tech school color.

that A&M was going to do better than the haters thought going into next year, but I’m not as confident with the coaching change. I’m not saying it definitely won’t work out, I’m just not (as) confident that it will.

Teams can win with a great rushing attack and playing good defense [duh, that’s the (old) SEC way], but I don’t know that they will have a good enough defense to actually win games beyond the ones they are supposed to win.

They'll really struggle to be bowl eligible

Playing in he SEC without a defensive line is a daring concept. Not as daring as to play in the B12 without a QB like Texas has done the last two years, but daring nonetheless.

Add in a new coach and new QB and it could be some rough sledding.

I think Mizzou could actually do OK next year. They have a pretty good QB and a good RB ( if Josey can come back OK ). The east isnt the beast that the west is

It’d be one thing if it were QB or OL or some other position where it makes sense to redshirt and develop behind others. RB is one of the few positions where it makes sense to make early playing time (one of) your highest priority(ies).

The mystery crazy athlete is a guy named Shamycheal Chatman. This is what Baylor’s site says about him:

Linebacker and defensive end from Sealy (Texas) High School… Played under head coach Jimmie Mitchell at SHS… Named 2011 first-team All-District 24-3A after helping SHS to 8-3 record and bi-district playoff berth as senior… Played defensive end as junior in 2010, helped Sealy to 9-2 record and District 24-3A championship… Earned 2010 first-team All-District 24-3A honors… Recorded 40 tackles and eight sacks during junior season… Also plays basketball and throws discus for track team at Sealy.
BRILES ON CHATMAN
“Shamycheal is a great, great player. He’s a great kid who is mature. He can run, he has played defensive end and linebacker. He has tremendous upside. We think that we’ll be able to develop him through our strength and training and coaching on the field.”

UT’s rival has been OU for a long time..

That's why it was played on Thanksgiving or the day after every year?

I’m sure that game was only sold out in College Station, never UT.

If you’re trying to tell me that A&M cared more about it than UT, I’ll agree 100%. But to say that UT wasn’t emotionally invested in that game is completely absurd.

Not to the extent that the Aggies were invested

and I also think most Horn fans are just tired of all the drama queen act from A&M the last couple of years. I am glad they are gone, but I will continue to laugh at them when warranted because they are funny

Yes,

this is a fair complaint against A&M. But to say that UT doesn’t care about beating a school that’s similarly sized, similarly ranked academically and has quite a bit of football history itself is stupid.

They both suffer from one of my least favorite trends in CFB

the blank off the rack pants… save Notre Dame, where it perfectly fits the uniform, I don’t think it particularly looks good on any school. Texas, Penn State, etc. would ALL look better with some kind of stripe.

As far as the jerseys go, there are things about both I like and both I dislike. Oregon has the ugliest font known to man (although the revision they used for the Orange Bowl wasn’t terrible).. Arizona State just kind of felt uninspired, they went too hard trying to go “fierce”

There were UT fans

who were convinced that the only reason they hadn’t flipped Baylor commit and 4* WR Corey Coleman was because they would rather have DGB and were just waiting on him.

Per the ND to Houston switch:

Kelly was quoted after the news broke saying “I always said this about these types of players. You’d rather have to coach against them for 4 games, then work with them for 4 years” …or something to that effect.

Pretty bad the way this whole thing went down.

BK talked to Greenberry last night and was assured that he’d be in the fold the following morning. BK didn’t even get the surprise news from Greenberry himself this morning, but from his HS coach. There’s even more back story (involving DG’s cousin, Tee Shepard), but it doesn’t matter.

there is a way to go about oversigning that is a happy medium – where you arent getting blindsided like ND, but you arent yanking scholarships from kids at the last second.

i completely agree.

its a tough subject, and it can easily be abused. but at the same token, these coaches dont want to get blindsided when these high profile kids have the ability to jump from school to school. it has something to do with why LSUs class isnt as good. they were at one time holding scholarship space for gunner and landon (probably not so much on landon) and had to scramble when they decided to go elsewhere.

I wouldn't say he's a jackass, personally.

He’s just incredibly uptight and used to doing things a very different way than we are around here. He would survive on LSB for about a day before the Angrydome either tore him to pieces or convinced him to do it himself.

i was ready to totally drop it

before reading this:

I acknowledge that argument, but don’t agree with it for reasons I already stated.
One part is that we (the people ranking) had more information than the general public did/does. The other part is that the limited track record of the GM was simply not germane to the ranking. And if that’s your main concern, then I can’t see much of a gulf in disagreement. Honestly looking back, where would you have ranked them?

really?

REALLY?

also, i posted the GIF before reading the rest of the thread.

Quite a bit of contact with multiple members of Mariners front office, past and present.

So, for one example, we had knowledge of just how much (heavily) they were amping up the saber-route in terms of player analysis and that Jack Z was well known for his scouting prowess with Milwaukee. It’s one-sided of course, but that didn’t make it untrue.

Absolutely correct

The staff had just got lazy and entitled and made terrible evaluations. After the changes they have done a lot better the last couple of classes. The talent there now is a lot better than people realize. It is just that it is so young. Hopefully this coming year we get back to consistently winning ten games a year. I was really hoping they would get both him and Elston.

Class as a whole seems to compliment the 2011 class defensively. Losing Allen to Oregon is disappointing considering the success they have in developing big receivers.

by casew on Feb 1, 2012 4:06 PM CST up reply actions

one of my best friends really follows this stuff

i have trouble keeping track of all the names. but if ok state wants you to play wideout and you’re a big receiver why the fuck would you go to a place like oregon or almost anywhere else

anyways i was tryin to get schultzys attention b/c i saw marcus smart and phil forte play allen last night and they did not disappoint. forte hit about 5 3’s and he shot them all about 2-3 feet behind the line, he’ll be a better shooter than page. they’re both incredibly jacked too, both were very physically imposing for their size

and smart is just unbelievable, he can do it all, defend, dribble, shoot, pass (made about 3 no look passes and 1 sick alley oop pass) he could get to the rim any time he wants. ft shooting could use some work also he’s a great hustle player, he and forte both dove for loose balls about 8 times. smart scared the hell outta me twice, once he had to come out the game b/c he banged his head real hard diving for a ball and another was when forte threw him a bad alley oop pass and he landed on his back or hands, thought for a second he might have broke his wrist or something

shouldnt have even been in there since they were up 28 w/4 minutes left in the game.

but idk how much smart will score in college, but he’s the real deal holyfield

Will Nash be back next season? Or are they still allowed to jump to pros after 1 year?

If he is back they could put out an athletic lineup with decent all-around size outside of Guerrero and this Forte. They won’t have a sure enough talented big man unless there is more to Jurick then I know, which is very possible.

It’s hard for me to say from this. I’ve only observed one broken nose treatment, so I don’t feel really confident giving out advice on it, especially since it seems like a lot of the diagnosis comes from physical exam.

In general, if something is broken, you’ll know because the pain doesn’t go away after a day or two the way sprains or contusions most often do. It’s a bit different in the nose with all of the cartilage, but the truism may still hold.

If it’s still swollen, very painful (especially to the touch), or you see blood at all, I would recommend going.

1. 5 months of commitment is a quite a while, not something to scoff at.
2. That’s no excuse to take away the scholarship he was guaranteed when he committed.
3. Then why didn’t this come up until NSD? People were reporting that he was literally crying this morning. They may have hinted it was a possibility a month ago, but there’s no way he knew definitively until today.
4. Him ending up at a decent school anyways isn’t a good excuse for doing that to a kid.

by colonialbob on Feb 3, 2012 12:20 AM CST up reply actions

yes, he is an asshole.

but you need to understand something…no scholarship was taken away. he still had an offer to be an alabama player, he would just have to wait till january to enroll. he still had options, and he knew about those options (whether you think he didnt or not) for about a month.

yes, grayshirting can suck, and it looks bad on the surface. but saban easily couldve have waitied until today and left him with nothing. he couldve completely yanked their offer all together. we had two gray-shirt candidates, both of whom recently had major ACL reconstructive surgery, both knew for about a month our intentions to grayshirt them, both ended up signing with quality institutions.

i know it sucks, but saban would rather go through something like that, than end up like brian kelley who lost some kid at the last second and didnt have a backup plan. we had two kids in collins and greene who easily couldve gone to LSU or Georgia respectively. what if they did switch on NSD and we didnt have someone ready to take his place? Saban is doing everything within his legal power to ensure the success of alabama.

the question then, is, why arent you angry at your coach for not doing everything in his power to recruit to the extent of what is allowed? why arent you angry at your coach for losing 50% of his last 2 recruiting classes? why arent you angry at your coach for only signing 19 kids? If most of you auburn fans would stop looking over the fence and actually look at what is going on in your own backyard, you probably wouldnt be so mad.

Any more and you are getting a cease and desist from chromasters balls inc. - Chromaster

by Mr. Abe Froman on Feb 2, 2012 8:49 AM CST up reply actions

Ok.

Why should I be mad that Auburn signed 19 kids? We swung and missed on some high-profile prospects. There’s nothing morally wrong with that. We still had one of the highest ranked classes by star avg, so it’s not like it lacked in quality. And while yes, Auburn’s attrition has been bad recently, that’s because a lot of kids have done stupid shit to get kicked off the team, not because Chizik manages his 85 scholarships like an NFL roster.

What Bama is doing is wrong because commitment is a two-way street. When a player commits to a school, the school is also committed to the player. If that player doesn’t pan out, then the school shouldn’t back out of that commitment after one or two years. It’s the coaches fault for incorrectly evaluating the recruit when he was in high school, so they should honor the kid’s scholarship. That commitment between the two sides applies from the time a recruit commits to your school, not just when he signs the papers.

by e2drummer on Feb 2, 2012 9:28 AM CST up reply actions

oh dont give me this moral high ground crap.

auburn is barely 24 hours into making that decision. and if youre going to start changing your arguement from “saban is a pos human being because he asked a kid to grayshirt” to “saban is a pos human being because he doesnt give 4 year scholarships”, then you need add the names of the coaches of about 90% college football.

again, i will reiterate: no commitment was pulled, no offer was yanked, no scholarship was taken away from those two kids.

Because I'd rather see head coaches act like they had a sense of morals.

I understand that BCS football is hypercompetitive, especially when it comes to recruiting, but the second you resort to ’he’s just doing what it takes to win’ justifying overtly screwing over a kid is the second that those who criticize college sports in general and college football specifically about this not being about student athletes and legitimizing their claim that the players should get paid as (semi)-professionals.

well i think judging a coaches morals on him asking a recruit to defer his enrollment is short sighted.

look at our SEC record academic honor roll selections. look at our graduation rate (second best of the final AP top 10 behind stanford). look at the almost 2 million dollars saban has given to area charities. look at all the work he did after the tornado. look at kids he has given medical scholarships to.

call saban an asshole. call him abbrasive. you could even call him a prick and i would largely agree with you. but i will defend him against being called a POS human being for asking a recruit to defer his enrollment. saban did not “overtly screw him over”. he was honest and upfront with the recruit and gave him plenty of time to weigh his options. he still had a scholarship offer. saban still wanted him to be a member of our team.

I agree that calling him a POS is over the line

and made comments that suggested it.

I still think oversigning is wrong. I know that this specific case wasn’t quite as bad and I know that verbal agreements are worth the paper they are printed on, but I think that this sort of last minute shennanigans goes against the spirit of the rules. Head Coaches in CFB have all of the power from the minute players step on campus and get multimillion dollar salaries to go along with it. I know that it seems unfair to programs and coaches and their fans for the switches that happen often enough with the elite guys, but this is basically the only step in the entire development path where the players have some control/power.

completely agree, which is why the SEC made oversigning illegal.

in the past, coaches could get those kids LOIs and make them greyshirt. now, they have to give that kid the option to defer his enrollment or look elsewhere. i think the main thing going forward is the amount of time given by those coaches to say “hey, this is what we want to do with you”. saban couldve waited till yesterday to tell these kids about greyshirting, but he told them a month ago – which was plenty of time for them to weigh their options and decide to go to kentucky and arkansas.

there is now a difference between “oversigning” and “greyshirting”. oversigning is wrong, yes, and is now illegal. grayshirting is a different matter – the commitment is still there, a scholarship is still theirs, but the date of their enrollment is changed, and they get counted towards the next years class. they have the option to take the greyshirt or sign with another school – which stresses the importance of time given to kids to open back up their recruitment.

again, i am in agreement. i dont like seeing kids get left out in the cold. i think the NCAA is making some quality headway in making it harder for programs to abuse the verbal agreements. i think it would also behoove the NCAA to allow for an early signing period in football like in basketball.

I don't think you can say that there is much commitment on the school's side in greyshirting.

In this instance, it just sounds like the next way to attempt to beat the system now that oversigning is illegal in the SEC. I know things change in recruiting, but if a school takes a 3* commitment over the summer, that kid’s scholarship should be a priority over a 5* who commits on NSD. It’s up to the coaches to gauge whether to accept a commitment at the time a recruit is ready to commit so this situation doesn’t happen.

With what happened yesterday, the month of advance warning that the recruits supposedly received doesn’t jive with the reaction from those recruits yesterday. I suppose it’s possible they just ignored Bama’s coaches a month ago, but those recruits acted like they fully expected to sign with Bama when they woke up yesterday morning. Philon even had a TV signing ceremony set up. The coaches from Bama probably told him a month ago that he would possibly have to take a greyshirt, but I doubt he was told anything definitive. Even if they were given definitive advice to look elsewhere, the newer commitments should have been the ones told they needed to greyshirt because of scholarship obligations to older commitments, not the other way around.

part of the problem are some of the prima donna recruits who wait until the last second to chose their school

or even after NSD like winston. or even last year with cyrus. both alabama and auburn were holding a scholarship for him. the team he didnt choose would have an open scholarship they couldve used for someone else.

i agree more could be done, and more rules could be implemented. but i seriously think your efforts could be better used not accusing saban of being a POS human being when you have your own programs issues to worry about – or even other schools out there like stanford and GaTech that did much worse this recruiting season.

It is amazing how much the little things can matter.
Other schools that found out they had been cut actually hadn’t been in the race for months. John Beckham decided he didn’t want Dorial to play at one school after he saw a coach slam a headset at the end of the game instead of simply handing it to a waiting assistant.

The coach was Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly, Tracy Beckham said.

There is so much gold in this article it's crazy. Stuff I NEVER would have thought about.
Dorials made his first official visit to Texas in November for the Longhorns’ game against Kansas State. He and his family dined at Vince Young Steakhouse on the eve of the contest, but under NCAA rules, the school could pay to feed only Dorial and his parents, not his brother and a friend, whose meals cost $50 each.

"You have to make money like Vince Young to eat at that place because it was so expensive," Tracy Beckham said.

The morning of the game, the Beckhams ate breakfast with the Longhorns at the Omni Hotel. The breakfast buffet was a pricey $50 per person, so the Beckhams had their son and his friend order off the menu to save money.

Hahahaha, OU reported Arkansas. Awesome.
Earlier, they had also run into Oklahoma co-offensive coordinators Norvell and Josh Heupel and had talked to them for a while. The conversation was allowed under NCAA rules, but it also counted as one of the assistant coaches’ three off-campus visits.

But a head coach like Petrino is allowed to make only one off-campus visit to a recruit. The Beckhams talked with him and another Arkansas assistant for five minutes and left.

Tracy Beckham said Norvell saw the conversation and someone later reported it to the NCAA.

This is what I was talking about, Mizzou fans.
When Dorial and his family took their final official visit to Missouri the next day, the Tigers’ Yost told the Beckhams to make sure to let him know when they got to Jefferson City, Mo., which is just 30 miles south of the university. After they did, they started noticing signs like "MIZ-DGB" and "Come Home To Be A True Son" hanging off highway overpasses.

That kind of coordination is illegal.

The next day, when Dorial and his family arrived to watch the Missouri’s men’s basketball team play, the crowd roared. Before the game, there were fliers in the stands that said, "Mizzou has brought in the #1 ranked football player in the entire COUNTRY for today’s game . . . We’re changing the MIZ . . . ZOU chant today to MIZ . . . DGB. Please let Dorial feel the love and welcome him home to MIZZOU!!"

i wonder, since they didnt actually say his name....

but it def raises eyebrows. our student sections chant names of recruits all the time (as im sure most do) but not with that kind of official assistance.

Why is this even a rule? Wouldn’t the university want to give the recruit the best possible on campus experience?

Dorial’s relationship with Missouri first began shortly after he moved in with the Beckhams in 2007. The shy seventh-grader was 6-foot-3 at the time and John Beckham took him to a Tigers football camp.

It was primarily for high school juniors and seniors, but Dorial fit right as a wide receiver, despite having hardly ever played football.

"This guy," John Beckham recalled thinking as he watched Dorial in action, "could be really good."

Missouri’s coaches were also impressed by Dorial’s potential. When they asked him what school he attended, he told them Reed.

They had never heard of the school and Dorial explained to them that it was Reed Middle School.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

They met Texas coach Mack Brown, who they thought was the most personable of all the head coaches. Tracy Beckham described him as "Mr. Picture Guy."

"The other head coaches might be like, ‘OK, let’s get a picture,’ " she said. "He’s like, ‘OK, now the moms!’ He’s like the wedding planner. He’s like, ‘OK everybody, Hook ‘em ‘Horns, here we go!’ He’s just hilarious. ‘OK, hold up this Heisman Trophy!’ It’s just like one thing after another."

sounds like big ten peeps are not happy with urban meyer
This all started when Wisconsin’s Bret Bielema and Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio publicly criticized Meyer’s recruiting tactics. Of the ten players that committed to Ohio State after Meyer became head coach, eight had previously committed to other schools. That includes offensive tackle Kyle Dodson (Wisconsin) and defensive end Se’Von Pittman (Michigan State).
“You’re pissed because we went after a committed guy? Guess what, we got 9 guys who better go do it again,” said Meyer. “Do it a little harder next time.”

Auburn signs 4*/5* OT Jordan Diamond.

O-Line recruiting has been ridiculous for the past couple years. Auburn could field an entire line of 4-5* OTs.

One prospect left… Stefon Diggs.
