I think this might be the first OT thread I've ever started.
For those of you who have never been an SB Nation author, the new story format is a lot like making a new FanPost. I'm not sure it's always been like that. I don't think I've started a FanPost in a long time.
FORCED TOPIC PORTION OF THE OT OP
Okay, here's something. You're designing a video game. You have 13 "points" to distribute in the game over the four following categories (up to five per category).
How would you allocate the resources?

4 story, 4 gameplay, 3 graphics, 2 sound. If you’re going to change anything, add one to gameplay and take from graphics. I like story in my games.

I debated sound and graphic for awhile.
But I figured it would probably be a tile-based strategy/RPG from me. They don’t have high graphical standards.
I have sound and graphics equal, but I'm much closer to adding more to sound than I am anything else.

I suppose a lot of this depends on what kind of game… but sound is the last thing I generally care about (not that it’s unimportant)

Atmosphere.
Some games have great tracks. Also, they stick with me. I definitely notice anytime I hear something from Mario or Zelda games (others, too, but more people recognize those).

but sound just sticks with me more than graphics. Or maybe nostalgia just makes me not care about graphics

Music falls under sound.
Vidya music is a pretty important part of my life.
For example, it’s like the only thing I like about Final Fantasy.

The Final Fantasy games had some amazing soundtracks.
Of course, the best video game soundtrack ever is Lunar Silver Star Story. I still listen to that soundtrack all the time.
My favorite, honest to god, is Mario Galaxy.
Not counting Brawl.
I don’t know why Galaxy appealed to me so much, but it did. Prior to that, it was probably FF6.

I've been wanting to get SMG lately but I think i'm going to try and finish my backlog of new games
and the games I want to replay first. I love replaying the stories but damn it can take long…
I have vastly different opinions than most people.
You have to go down very far until you hit something that is even in my top ten.
I hate how they have different rankings for a title on each console.
It makes things a little convoluted for me. I understand things play differently on different systems, but Portal 2 should not be on there 3 times no matter how much I love it.
So what do you suggest?
Magazines/websites ignore console differences, or Game Rankings create a system to lump them in together?

The latter
Console differences shouldn’t be ignored, but with so many multi-platform games these days it’s a bit repetitive to have to specify each platform of a game. Portal 2 for PS3 and Portal 2 for PC are still essentially the same game. It shouldn’t get 2 spots on a ranking list. The different rankings are relevant when comparing titles on a particular console but if you’re comparing all games from all consoles, simplify the list a bit.

I don't know how it would be much extra work.
Average the scores. Fairly simple. Or just take the highest score. Either way it’s just unnecessarily repetitive to have the same game listed up to 3 on an all-time top games list. There is rarely substantial differences in quality between different versions of a game.
They're different games, so I don't think it's unnecssary.
It’s simply taking review scores and plugging them in. Making it detect games that are the same would be at least one extra step.
And having not created the code, I’m not going to assume it would be an easy or flawless step. It’s certainly pretty easy to just do the own work in my head, anyway.

But still, that’s ridiculous. I’m also offended by Skyrim and Oblivion both having higher ratings than Morrowind. Classless barbarians.

I remember that game! It was wholly mediocre and repetitive as shit! Why do these things happen?! Why?! Why! Why? Why…why…
No idea.
I mean, in general, I’d say that list reflects my interests more strongly than if you polled GameFAQs or everyone on Xbox Live at any one time or whatever.
I mean, Metroid Prime is bordering on a religion for me. Where else are you gonna see it that high?
But, I still find some disagreements and head-scratchers.

It just reminds me why I pay absolutely no attention to video game reviewers.
We have too widely different tastes. Because apparently I disagree with all of them.
Just like with movies, dismissing reviewers entirely, I think, is almost as ridiculous as just going by their scores to make your decisions.
Find reviewers whose tastes you know and understand, and who give detailed reasoning for their likes/dislikes, and you can get some actually beneficial information.

One potential issue: video game reviewers aren't nearly as prominent
Finding somebody more aligned with your own personal taste isn’t necessarily as easy as finding a movie critic.

I loved Uncharted.
As a game it’s pretty good, not great. Combine with the story and cinematics, and the experience is very very good. I think the first was better than the second in terms of your complaint, although I’m not sure I ever felt bored/uninvolved. Which part did you play?
(My biggest complaint is that the climbing/platforming sections are very linear)

Ah, yeah, it started kind of slowly.
I think it also helped playing the first one… I already knew/liked the characters, so I was willing to put up with a little more.

Starting kind of slowly is really bad to me.
Really, really bad.
Monster Hunter didn’t even start that slowly, though to be fair it is an example of being rewarded for sticking with a game that drags early.
Mostly, though, they seem like a fairly-linear game driven on story and all-purpose button-pressing to make the given action happen. Not that much for me.

Well, when I say slowly, I don't mean that in a bad way.
I mean that it starts in media res, and so you don’t know exactly what’s going on. shrug I didn’t really have a problem with it. I don’t see how it’s worse than, say, a Mario game that offers up some ridiculously easy levels to start out with…

Another thing I'll go on a rant on in /v/ now and then:
Easy and fun are not mutually exclusive.
Especially in, say, a Mario game, since the early levels are masterfully designed by one of the greatest geniuses to have ever lived when it comes to subtle orientation.
Beating King Bob-Omb isn’t hard, but the first time you play it, you’re invested in the mechanics of the game and exploring the world.
I’m not sure Mario is quite the franchise you’re looking for.

Monster Hunter Tri is probably the only game I can think of where I was bored early and ended up loving the hell out of.
Oh, and Kotor (fuck backspace).
Monster Hunter, though, I could tell from the moment I started that I would like it, though. I was aware of what awaited me in the world, even if I didn’t get to mess with any of that early on.

I would go the opposite way. Mass Effect series, Bioshock, the Metal Gear Solid games (to some extent…they are fairly convoluted) are all modern games that I think do a better job with story than older games.
The Metal Gear 'story' just feels more like a convoluted mess.
I couldn’t get into Mass Effect enough to see the story in action. Just haven’t played Bioshock.
Yeah. I hesitate to keep Metal Gear in that group.
What are some good examples of video games with good story?

It’s definitely got a niche quality to it but then again you get to run around and stab people so it does have a way to keep others engaged I suppose.
That would go with my "modern games, better story" thing.
(side note: didn’t play through it. Was repetitive and too…forgiving/easy).
Older games just seemed to pay lip service to story, or be really, really cliche.
FFT. FFVII to a point. KOTOR.
And especially Lunar 2. I have never been more invested in a game’s story than I was that one’s.
Bioware did KOTOR
and Mass Effect. They’re good at story.
I like some FF stories. Some are really played out, though.
Kotor's story is a big part of what makes me like it.
Another big part being that it is Star Wars.
But it’s an exception, not generally what gets me in to a game.

I don't care about the story that much. It's a video game.
Not putting much in to story doesn’t mean the story is shitty. Super Mario Bros. doesn’t have a shitty story, because it has virtually no story.
Instead, it has kickass gameplay and delicious sound.

I don't think there are many new IPs that are single player based that can survive without a quality story.
I would take graphics down a notch. You don’t have to have terrific graphics to have an amazing looking game. Okami is still one of the most gorgeous games I’ve ever played and it came out 5 years ago in the previous console generation.
Sound is important for immersion. Gameplay needs to be smooth but not necessarily ground breaking.
I would put them as:
Story – 4
Graphics – 2
Sound – 4
Gameplay – 3
Your subject line might be true. It could be why I'm generally not that happy with the direction the industry is going.

I'm trying to come up with a single player heavy game that didn't put a lot of time into a story...
I’m really coming up blank. The Marios, Donkey Kongs, etc of the world get a pass because the platforming is so damn fun and they take us back to when we were young and things were always awesome.
Take a look at newer platformers even and the stories are far more advanced. Expectations have changed for new IPs.
Far more advanced doesn't mean particularly good.
The industry in general has advanced. Even the most basic stories today I expect are going to be ahead of ages past, but that doesn’t necessarily mean more resources went there than the other four elements.

I don’t think there is any question that there are more resources used on story compared to other elements of games today to make a successful game than there was years ago. You have already admitted that many games in the past either had little or no story at all.
The only really successful game I can think of that may buck the trend is Katamari but it’s success was somewhat limited and from what I can tell it still had a pretty original story to it despite the storytelling method being novel. So I’m not sure that fits either.
Well, again, "successful" and "games philkid enjoys" are different.

Gaming has changed. Obviously you don’t think it’s for the better, but if you want to be a successful game developer, you’re probably going to need to invest a good amount in a story unless you’re lucky enough to get a class Nintendo IP on your resume.
Because this was never about trying to make successful games.
At least that was not my intention. So I’m not particularly interested in it.

I understand that the ambiance of a game can have a large effect on the resulting quality…but sound would never come close to touching graphics, gameplay, or story on my list.

Does LSB give financial advice?
Despite having spent the last few months in mostly part-time, near-minimum-wage jobs, Kat and I have (to me) a lot saved up, and not much we need to do with it any time soon. We could blow it on something crazy fancy, but then we wouldn’t have it around for, y’know, emergencies and such.
So I’ve been reading around on doing that whole “turn money in to more money” thing. I was wondering if anyone around here has any investing-type advice or experience.

That's one thing we're looking in to.

While this is very solid and rad advice...
My suggestion is to pay off debt. I now nothing of your situation but I’m assuming you have credit card debt or some sort of loan since most of us do. I’d recommend you put the cah towards your highest interest rate debt. You will probably never make as much on that cash as they are making on your debt. If you have no debt then I suggest hookers and blow. Go wild.

1) Arab man attempting to get up and sweating nervously during landing – couldn’t speak English. Had to use restroom terribly… flight people were getting nervous. Haven’t seen much that I could classify as crazy.

My family didn’t drink (my siblings did but they are so much older that they were gone by the time I was old enough to start experimenting). The gf’s does…a lot. Getting piss drunk on Christmas eve-eve a few years ago in front of her parents house with her dad and brothers was quite interesting.
I learned quite quickly.
I can discuss politics with my father in law or I can drink at the same rate as my father in law, but not both.

These days I do it more casually and only end up drunk if it goes on for a long time, but I won’t lie and say I’ve never drank just to get drunk.

I’m probably all alone on this one considering almost nobody bought the damn game, but I loved Enslaved and its controls were not always silky smooth.

From time to time, I’ll play an FPS that was released pre-9/11 (CS), so gameplay is pretty fucking important there. TF2 was released more than half a decade ago and is still going strong because of the gameplay.
Yes, I like TF2 despite being an FPS.
And, yes, it is all about the gameplay. It has some fun sounds, but they’re mostly meaningless. It has pretty graphics, but nothing to care about. It has a kind-of-amusing back story, but none of that is found in the game; it’s all been created since.
It is almost 100% gameplay and it is glorious.

I completely sacrifice graphics for frames, so my TF2 looks even worse.
I don't think graphics is all about power, but what you do with the power you alot as well.
I think TF2 looks really, really good, because they chose a look that I think doesn’t age. It’s also just as complicated as it needs to be for the game.
But, you’re right, if they were worse, I’d love it nearly as much.
Kind of like how Ocarina of Time has more powerful graphics than Link to the Past, but LttP looks gorgeous and will forever. OoT has shown its age.

I've flown a lot, and a lot of airlines.
Not much AA, but United has given me way more problems than Delta, which has given me a few more problems than Alaska/Horizon and Southwest.
Could just be the luck of the draw, but I firmly believe different companies have different customer service strategies.

But the fiancee has been delayed twice flying through there.

My last delay (overnight) was in Denver, too, but it was because of DC, and in the summer.
Orlando said it was not weather related and we’d get comped. Denver said it was weather related and lol sucks to be you.

I still cringe at the laugh track, but they seem to use it way more sparingly than most shows, and it relatively-rarely seems to mess with the pacing, or get particularly out-of-control.

Irrelevant. That has nothing to do with the genre or the existence of a story
and everything to do with what the developer wants to focus on. Half Life has a pretty damn good story. How many genres exist where a game wouldn’t improve from a solid story?
This is a different argument all together.
I never suggested stories couldn’t improve a game, and I don’t think anyone else from my line of thinking (go to /v/ and you’ll find I’m far from the minority) would do so, either. Unless they were just trying to be difficult.
The question is what is most important, and for me story is way down on the list. Bioshock would have been less awesome without one of the greatest gaming plots I’ve experienced, but I would have enjoyed it even less if you’d taken away the beautifully-realized game world, or the killer gameplay mechanics.
Metroid Prime’s* story is presented entirely in optional scans of computers and wall engravings, and that’s awesome. What’s more awesome is one of the best soundtracks I’ve ever heard, one of the most visually stunning worlds I’ve ever seen, and maybe — quite seriously — the most fun game to control and play through I’ve ever touched. All four elements are used well there, but the story is optional, and the game would have been awesome even if that was taken out. Not so for the other three.
The story made both of these games better by being great; the plot in the case of Bioshock, the presentation in the case of Metroid Prime. But in neither was the story more important to what made the game terrific than the other elements that went in.
*Don’t give me that it’s an established IP. It’s a huge departure from the rest of the series, and what makes it great is not simply a revisiting of the same old Metroid style. It was also like six years and two consoles after its predecessor.

In fact, I’ve even come around a little bit. But in games like Metroid Prime, I will scan every frickin computer I can find. That’s the kind of stuff I eat up… and the kind of stuff I bet would push Metroid Prime even higher in my book (I admit I haven’t played much of it).

I’m not trying to say at all that story doesn’t appeal to me in even the slightest. But the MP story is not actually that great. It’s not that it sucks, but it’s simply that a meteor crashed and is destroying the planet, the natives are wiped out, and the space pirates are here mining the stuff from the meteor.
The only real “oh shit plot twist!” thing is that they have metroids on the planet. BUM BUM BUM!
Like I said, what makes it awesome is how it’s presented. The scanning and discovery mechanic is absolutely kick-ass. And I completely agree it pushes it higher. But what makes it like my second or third favorite game in the history of ever is the other three elements discussed here even more than the story presentation.

It’s my favorite opening sequence to a game to this day. You’re just exploring a ship that’s been absolutely wrecked, and you don’t know why. You just know that you scan pirates with horrific injuries and see wholesale destruction. It’s creepy as hell, and thrilling at the same time.
And while the boss fight is super easy, it’s also epic and gives you a satisfying jolt of “oh, yeah, that’ll do it.” Then dat escape sequence.

I didn't play the beginning or anything
Played it at a friend’s, so very little of the story. Most of my experience with the series is the multiplayer in the next one (I think?)

That was surprisingly decent multiplayer.
It seems silly and tacked on, but my friends and I still played it for hours.
It’s an absolute god tier game.
The second one is good as well, but very frustrating. The dark world segments are sometimes hard in the mean way, not the challenging way. And the atmosphere is too oppressive at points. But, still the same core mechanics, and in a package with an appropriate difficulty curve if you’ve just beaten the first game.
The third one I love more than most because of how great the control scheme is, but it has some unfortunate departures. It’s shorter, it has separate maps instead of one huge, connected world, and it has, like, cutscenes and NPC interactions.

It adds to the immersion in the world and the story way more than cut scenes do. It’s fun trying to unearth what’s going on like a mission, too, instead of having the game presenting it to you without you doing a thing.

Sorry I didn’t think of that one earlier.
Anyway, I certainly think each of these categories can make a game better, but I can think of several genres where it’s relatively unimportant. Action, adventure, sports, platforming, puzzle, fighting, party, and more.
I mean, the story in MH3 is that there’s a big monster that is attacking people and maybe causing earthquakes. Then you kill it, and later find out an even bigger monster is causing earthquakes. And you kill it and there’s a bonfire. And I had to actually think about that. From what I can tell, the stories in those war FPS games everyone loves aren’t too great, either. Those are two or three very successful franchises right there — one of which I love to death — where the story is well behind most other aspects of the production.
