The Texas Rangers have claimed 28 year old catcher Konrad Schmidt off of waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Schmidt was signed as an amateur free agent by the Diamondbacks in the summer of 2007, and has 17 career plate appearances, nine of them coming in 2010, and eight of them coming in 2012.
Schmidt appears to have one option remaining.
Schmidt would, I'm guessing, compete with Luis Martinez for the job of third catcher who will stay in AAA unless and until the Rangers need someone to fill in while one of their two major league catchers in 2013 are hurt or something.
There's a good chance Schmidt ends up getting put on waivers by the Rangers later in the offseason, with the team hoping that he will clear waivers and be able to be outrighted, allowing the team to keep him in the minors in 2013 without taking up a 40 man roster spot.
