Torii Hunter, Detroit Tiger - Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE
Torii Hunter has reportedly signed a 2 year, $26 million contract with the Detroit Tigers
According to various folks on Twitter, Torii Hunter has agreed to a two year, $26 million deal with the Detroit Tigers.
Hunter, 37, was a player the Rangers supposedly had some interest in signing on a short-term, relatively inexpensive deal. Two years is short-term, but $26 million for a 37 year old outfielder -- even one coming off one of his best seasons -- is more than I would be comfortable with, and I suspect more than Texas would have been comfortable with.
This suggests that the Angels did make a tactical error in not making a qualifying offer to Hunter, since he signed a deal worth almost twice what the qualifying offer would have been.
This also potentially impacts the Rangers in that, with Hunter now in place, the Tigers seemingly would be less likely to sign Josh Hamilton than they would have been prior to signing Hunter.
