Eli Whiteside, new Ranger - Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE
The Rangers have claimed former Giant catcher Eli Whiteside on waivers, and have re-signed Brandon Snyder to a minor league deal
Per John Blake, the Rangers have claimed catcher Eli Whiteside on waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.
Whiteside has had an eventful few months, as he was with the Giants in 2012, was claimed by the Yankees on waivers after the season, then was claimed on waivers by the Blue Jays, and now has been claimed on waivers by the Rangers.
Whiteside, 33, is arbitration-eligible, and has a career .215/.273/.335 line in the majors in 537 plate appearances, all but 12 of them coming with the Orioles.
With Whiteside being claimed, the team's 40 man roster is now full, at 40. Whiteside has likely been added to give the Rangers a potential backup catcher option behind Geovany Soto. I do not believe that Whiteside, Konrad Stewart, and Luis Martinez (all of whom are currently on the 40 man roster) will still be on the 40 man roster come spring training.
The Rangers have also re-signed Brandon Snyder to a minor league deal. Snyder spent much of the 2012 season as the team's primary righthanded bench bat, while playing all four corner spots as well as catcher.
