Monday Morning Rangers Update

Finally Nashville is relevant again - Frederick Breedon

The Winter Meetings have arrived.

It's time for the Winter Meetings. Sure, it's advertised as a baseball swap meet where we'll see dozens of trades and signings by the hour, but usually nothing much happens until suddenly it's the end of the week and you've acquired Mason Tobin from the Rule 5 draft and Jason Grilli is sounding pretty appealing.

On that note, Evan Grant has written for days about how the Rangers under Jon Daniels historically haven't used the Winter Meetings as a venue to announce acquisitions. Instead, the Rangers usually utilize the meetings to lay the groundwork for future deals and signings. Grant notes that the Rangers will be keeping an eye on the likes of Josh Hamilton, Zack Greinke, Mike Napoli, and Justin Upton at the meetings and could be ready to pounce in Nashville should they need to.

Richard Durrett has a "What to Watch For" primer to the Winter Meetings where he capsulizes various players the Rangers might be interested in and positions the Rangers will be looking to fill.

One item I noticed in Durrett's piece: Jon Heyman is reporting that Greinke has already visited with the Rangers. Hopefully they just showed him videos of Elvis Andrus and Adrian Beltre fielding their positions for hours.

T.R. Sullivan ponders whether Daniels has a big move in store for the Winter Meetings and notes how the Rangers have a lot more work to do this offseason compared to the previous winters of recent successful seasons.

Anthony Andro looks at the Rangers' needs heading into the Winter Meetings with a quote from Daniels on how he expects business to pick up in earnest within the next 10 days to two weeks.

Sullivan writes that Hamilton is attending the meetings with his family and ended up on the same flight as Daniels on the way to Nashville. The Rangers will be keeping tabs on Hamilton to see how his market develops before coming to a decision on if he fits in their plans. I'd be pretty surprised if Hamilton ends up signing during the meetings.

The DMN staff continues their series on potential Rangers free agent targets. Today they make a case for Adam LaRoche and summarize that the left-handed hitting former Washington National could be a Plan B option should the Rangers miss out on re-signing Hamilton.

Fox Sports Jon Paul Morosi writes of the Winter Meetings landscape being dominated by two Rangers targets: Greinke and Hamilton.

Jeff Wilson has more on last night's news that the Rangers have re-singed Geovany Soto. No details on the amount of the contract have been released as the deal likely won't be finalized until Tuesday, writes Wilson. Wilson also notes that the Rangers would like to come away from the meetings with another catcher and are targeting Napoli and A.J. Pierzynski.

Durrett has a little more information on Jurickson Profar's elbow. Profar has returned to the states and won't play in the Dominican League any more this season after an MRI showed some mild inflammation in his right forearm.

Just as Ken Rosenthal was putting Holland's name out there in trade talks, Holland was out there goofing around at Veda Knox Elementary School. Holland was taking time out to educate the students about the benefits of eating healthy, writes Drew Davison.

Finally, here's a video of Evan Grant and Gerry Fraley making their pre-Winter Meetings free agent predictions for where Nick Swisher, Koji Uehara, Napoli, Greinke, and Hamilton will sign. Grant thinks Uehara and Hamilton will return to Texas whereas Fraley--being Fraley--thinks the Rangers won't sign any one.
