Zack Greinke. Not a Ranger. - Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE
So much for signing Zack Greinke.
Multiple reports on Twitter from various baseball writers indicate that Zack Greinke is close to signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers, with Dylan Hernandez saying it would be a 6 year, $145 million deal.
Greinke was reportedly the Rangers' top free agent target, with various reports indicating that the Rangers were "all-in" on Greinke. Texas briefly looked like they may be emerging as the favorite, with reports indicating Greinke was impressed with owner Nolan Ryan and special assistant to the g.m. Greg Maddux in meetings with the Rangers' brass. Stories were leaking that the Dodgers were starting to think Greinke didn't want to play for Los Angeles, and were getting ready to take their ball and go home.
However, the Dodgers were always going to be the team that was going to spend the most on Greinke, and it appears at the end of the day that they are going to land the righthander.
With Greinke off the market, the Rangers will presumably start looking for a starter via trade, with R.A. Dickey and James Shields seeming to be the most likely targets. Greinke being off the market also means that the Rangers could have more interest in Josh Hamilton.
