So, Verducci has decided the SP conundrum for Texas.
And the Rangers do have Alexi Ogando and Scott Feldman in the bullpen as legitimate spot starter options.

Though I have to admit,

reading this article made me legitimately consider how to effectively use 6/7 starting pitchers in the best manner.

matchst1ck, if you’re out there, I’d like to talk about this with you.

You mean besides "let's just wait for someone to get hurt and bring in the next in line"?

I wondered if he did, which is why it's interesting to me that he wrote it.

Honestly,

I think it’ll be an open competition between Harrison and Ogando for the number 5 starter. I think Scooter will technically be in it, but it will come down to Harry or Alexi, and I think Harrison is the better starter.

I think Happy is the #5 until he proves he can hang in the roto.

Harrison is more like a # 3 starter and the ace of some staffs in MLB.

Colby, Holland, Darvish, Feliz, Harry/Ogando.

I think Feliz has been assured of a rotation spot to get his mindset correct for the role.

Oh sure. Feliz is definitely in the rotation.

What I don’t see is the sense in shit-canning a lefty who threw 185 innings with a sub-4.00 ERA. Ogando has been quite successful in the bullpen whereas Harrison has not. Harrison has proven he can be an innings eater, while Ogando has not. Why there seems to be a Harry/Ogando roto/bullpen quandry is beyond me.

think Harrison is the better starter.

140 pitches in a game,

120 pitches nine times, or however many times it was last year in Japan! That sounds like Nolan Ryan type pitch counts. And I have heard the Rangers pitchers are not on pitch counts. The primary consideration is whether they are effective going into the last three innings of the game.

I noticed the number of innings was very high for Yu last year, and considering the shorter Japanese season, he must have had a bunch of complete games. Verducci is not a bad writer, but he seems to be following the MLB in-the-box pitching philosophy that I think the Rangers have tried to get away from.

To be fair, NPB has every Monday off

So the high pitch count outings weren’t as stressful as you would think.

they pitch every 6th day

also, the reason for many of the high pitch counts is the fact that Japanese pitchers take pride, as I understand it, in staying in the game as long as the opposing starter. Yu’s team can be up 7-1, but he’ll stay in the game until the other starter is pulled. It’s like a game of chicken regardless of the score

A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
