two potential managers have turned down the Wolves job so far

It was a logically-defensible move at the time, but sacking McCarthy, who the players loved, and who has done more for the club than any manager in recent history, is looking worse and worse. At this point it seems only the re-animated corpse of Stan Cullis can steer us out of this mess.

The point was obvious: the league already has. On Sunday, Marca’s cover ran on Colorín Colorado, the prelude to: The End. On Monday, it leads on: “And now for the Champions.” Now that the league is tied up, that is. From the people who brought you “FOUR POINTS!”, “FIVE POINTS!”, “SIX POINTS!” and the critically acclaimed “SEVEN POINTS!” comes their best cover yet: “TEN POINTS!” screams Monday’s front page of AS. It may not be imaginative but it does pretty well sum it up.

They were not slow to note that Madrid have had 10 penalties this year – more than anyone else in Europe’s top leagues – and none against, Barcelona three. Madrid have had more penalties in the past three months than Barcelona have had in the entire time Guardiola has been in charge.

FM: Starting Over

Well, season four at Krasnodar was a total disaster- finished 11th, half the team hated me by year’s end, and it was clear this wasn’t working out. So I started a new game Friday- figured I’d try the Bundesliga, since it’s the only major Euro league other than Italy I haven’t previously played on FM, and Serie A bores me to tears.

Still wanted a bit of a challenge, though, so I decided to go with Hoffenheim. Not a bad bunch of players- a few solid vets in Vorsah, Beck, Obasi, Compper, and Weis, along a couple of promising African strikers, the young Brazilian Roberto Firmino, and one of my new favorite players, Gylfi Sigurdsson. Also, Ryan Babel.

"Those cocksuckers asking me if I thought we were gonna go up there and try to work his fuckin’ pitch count ‘cause he’s on three fuckin’ days rest…you know what I told those cocksuckers? He pitch ball, ball cross plate, we gonna knock the shit out of it."

Sigurdsson

I picked up him and he absolutely kills it. Was ridiculous, something like 25 goals in 30 games.

by jf55510 on Feb 13, 2012 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

He’s only scored one for me so far (through 2 matches) but I can see he’s going to be awesome.

My issue is

My issue is I don’t really play a true AM position. I generally play a 4-1-2-2-1; striker, two wings, two mf, one defensive mf, four defenders. So if I decide to play him I move to a 4-2-3-1 and swap the DM for the AM. But between CL, Carling Cup, FA Cup and EPL games there are plenty of matches for everyone. Though Wilshere is probably going to get dealt here soon.

by jf55510 on Feb 13, 2012 1:15 PM CST up reply actions

Formations

I generally prefer 4-2-3-1, but Hoffenheim have shitty wingers and tons of guys who can play striker, so I also set up a diamond 4-4-2 for them. That way I can use Sigurdsson as the AMC in either formation.

Now I just need some damn transfer money so I can buy up all das wunderkinder before my rivals beat me to them. I’m very much a Wenger disciple in that regard…

Gylfi

Played against Bayern last night, and Gylfi scored two long-shot strikes to help us to a 2-2 draw. In 5th place after eight matches. Babel is on fire- six goals so far.

Ramsey

Though 5 games for me, Ramsey is just killing it. Has 6 goals, 5 of which are outside of the box. I know you’ll be shocked, RVP got a 5-6 wk injury in the first game. He kills me.

How does getting rid of an icon like RVP hurt the team/morale/etc? He’s eating up a ton of salary space and I’d rather go buy a 25 y/o stud than have RVP on my injury list constantly…he should retire…

by jf55510 on Feb 17, 2012 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

Depends

I’ve found on previous FM’s that the team seems to be able to survive it OK as long as they’re doing well. I sold two of my best players on last year’s FM save, and didn’t suffer for it. Granted, I had guys ready to replace them, so that might help too.

I have a similar issue to your RVP one with Ryan Babel- he’s been one of my best players so far, but he takes up nearly €5 million in wages, and my club only has a €30 million wage budget at the moment.

"Those cocksuckers asking me if I thought we were gonna go up there and try to work his fuckin’ pitch count ‘cause he’s on three fuckin’ days rest…you know what I told those cocksuckers? He pitch ball, ball cross plate, we gonna knock the shit out of it."

Sigurdsson

Has 32 goals through 30 games. He is amazing. I’ve been playing him out of position, mainly as striker with RVP and Altidore getting numerous injuries. Though RVP is up to 19 goals through 15 games so when he plays he is studly.

Wenger said: ’I really like him (Hazard) and, for several reasons.

’It’s his creative power, his ability to mis-align the opponent, his vision of the game and his consummate skill to address the last pass which make him a very interesting player.

‘You should know that each season, it is imperative to show a profit of between £15-20m pounds. I would add that the purpose of a coach is to always buy at a price he sees fit.’

Everyone likes Hazard, Arsene

That’s why most of the big clubs in Europe would give their manager’s left nut to sign him. I’m still hoping that rumor going around about Liverpool having right of first refusal on Hazard as part of the Joe Cole loan is true, but it’s probably not.

I know Arsenal fans love him, but I’m not convinced Vermaelen is a solid center back. He seems to get throttled by good strikers that can take advantage of his positioning mistakes.

I think he's a good CB

when he’s in form. To be ideal he needs someone who can clean up a positioning mistake here and there, and it’s obviously not a small feat to find that guy. He’s not been in form since he’s come back and at that level he’s definitely nothing special.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 16, 2012 7:58 PM CST up reply actions

And

it should be noted that he’s had to play LB all of this time, a position that he does not like and is not great at. That probably goes at least some way in explaining his poor performance yesterday.

Andre Villas-Boas was described in midweek as a dead man walking by former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, but it was the name of another former fan favourite that rang around Stamford Bridge as chants of “Jose Mourinho” greeted the Blues’ 1-1 FA Cup fifth round draw with Birmingham on Saturday.
David Luiz, Ramires and Branislav Ivanovic all made poor attempts to clear a corner, and with several others standing motionless Murphy drifted in to smash home at the back post.

The goal was met with chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning”, aimed at Villas-Boas

by Brett Perryman on Feb 18, 2012 2:15 PM CST up reply actions

This feels totally like Villa with Houllier last season (only with much higher expectations)

It’s probably likely that AVB has done a fair few things wrong, but I really doubt anything could get going when Terry, Lampard, Drogba and others are still around.

It doesn’t feel like he’s had money with the intent of adding to the first-team, from looking at his signings: Mata, Lukaku, Cahill, Courtois, Meireles, Romeu and De Bruyne.

Or maybe that’s just a red herring and Aston Villa is AVB’s level (LOL STILL CONVINCING MYSELF THAT IT’LL HAPPEN EVEN THOUGH AVB’S NEXT DESTINATION IS PROBABLY SOMEWHERE ACTUALLY GOOD LIKE INTER OR ARSENAL)

It's probably time for him.

But who knows. Arsenal board have been pretty tolerant so far.

by LiamP on Feb 18, 2012 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

The board

isn’t going to get rid of him.

If he does step down, they’ve got quite the situation on their hands. Right now, they can hide behind the fact that Arsene’s adapted style has been to develop young players, not buy ready-made studs, because he’s been so successful. When that shield is gone, ownership will be in the spotlight. I suspect that it will be very uncomfortable for all of them, maybe outside of Kroenke since he almost never steps foot in England.

Van Persie and Sagna would definitely go. Koscielny and maybe Szczesny would be two I could see asking out, and they’re still going to have this collection of spare, overpaid veterans under contract (which has become one of their bigger problems). I tend to think that Wilshere and Ox would stick it out, not sure about Vermaelen but he’d probably stay with his new deal and all.

I'll never get over how the Mata situation was handled

The Cahill thing was just Coyle being a bitch tho. Ended up settling for less money than Arsene offered.

But the players look like they’ve tuned him out. Reports out today that they still don’t practice defense in training which is flabbergasting. If he signed Arteta, Santos etc. last season with Cesc and Nasri on the first team, awesome. But signing them to start was never going to get you a CL spot.

And yet, after all that they were miraculously in 4th on the new year. Surprise the players with a couple of signings for fucks sake. They did all they could to climb back from a horror start with no depth and they need a jolt to push on. He then says the same shit about players returning as new signings and doesn’t do shit.

Unreal.

So

Are all Chelsea fans idiots, or just the ones on Soccernet? I find it hilarious that they judge Rafa not fit to manage their club. Yep, heaven forbid you lot hire the man whose club kept you out of two CL finals, and who has won both European cups. Remind me how many Europa and CL titles your club has again? Morons.

Rafa

He’s been a good manager, but what the hell happened at Inter? I’m not sure he’d be an upgrade from AVB, and he’s not in the same class as their previous two managers, Hiddink and Ancelotti.

Not mediocre. Right about average

You know what's interesting is that United generally go after players who have done well against them (Ronaldo, Valencia, etc.)

So in consecutive European ties, they’ll have gone up against Christian Eriksen and now Javi Martinez with Bilbao…and yet, I bet SAF will remain stubborn and refuse to sign another CM.

by LiamP on Feb 24, 2012 12:06 AM CST reply actions

must be really hard having a manager that wont sign players

Pretty sweet goal

one of the few United players I can’t really hate.

by sprite on Feb 26, 2012 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

I'll have to think

but Scholes falls in the hate category despite his brilliance if that’s what you’re asking.

by sprite on Feb 26, 2012 10:50 AM CST up reply actions

I hate

Evra of course and Carrick for thinking his shit don’t stink. I hate Nani for being an oompa loompa, and it’s obviously hard for a rival to not hate Scholes. I don’t like Berbatov at all, and Rooney’s Rooney. After 8-2 my resentment is probably a good deal higher than when they were just fuglying their way to titles.

by Brett Perryman on Feb 26, 2012 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Carrick, by the way,

would make a terrific San Antonio Spur.
