Oakland A's reportedly sign Yoenis Cespedes

Per Yahoo Sports' Tim Brown, the Oakland A's have reportedly agreed to terms with Cuban defector, outfield prospect and YouTube sensation Yoenis Cespedes.

According to Susan Slusser, the deal will be 4 years, $36 million.

Cespedes is a 26 year old who defected in the summer of 2011. A power hitter whose arm and range is expected to allow him to stick in centerfield, Cespedes was seen as a potential 5 tool player who could likely step into a major league lineup quickly.

Cespedes will presumably go into the 2012 season as the A's starting centerfielder.

UPDATE -- Peter Gammons says that Cespedes will be a free agent after 2015, rather than being arbitration-eligible (as most players with four years of major league service time would be).

I loved this article on Willy Mo

http://mlb.sbnation.com/2011/6/22/2236633/wily-mo-pena-diamondbacks-debut

Pena batted four times against the Royals, and saw 15 pitches. He swung at nine of them. Six of those swings came on pitches clearly out of the strike zone. Pena struck out in two of his four plate appearances. Of his nine swings, five of them missed the ball entirely, while two went for fouls. And one of those swings sent a 94 mph fastball 441 ft to center field.

Good signing by the A's.

If you only have 9 million a year to spend, may as well take a flyer on a guy who could potentially be a star.

Cespedes is 26 and potentially a star. If you only have 9 million to spend, I would spend it on a flyer like Cespedes than an old has been like Sizemore.

The more that contract information becomes available, the more it looks like a good deal for both sides.

Reasonable, trade-able contract if he hits in his first year. A’s might get some power in their lineup.

I can't help but wonder

if this is at all a good deal. FA after 2015? He had better be able to handle MLB pitching immediately; even the best Cuban players take a little time to adjust. I know one can say the Rangers just spent three times as much money on Darvish, but at least they get him for his full major league control period. Basically, it seems like the A’s got all of the risks associated with a prospect with few of the finanical benefits
